How come this show wasn't as popular as Recess despite being made by the same creators?

Sci-fi can be hit or miss. For every Stargate there's a Mars Needs Moms.

The world was waiting for more Lilo & Stitch, anything inferior was not going to cut it.

I remember this show constantly airing on the Disney Channel, but it was only ever the first episode. Any time I'd flip to it and that show was on, it was always that same episode

it just wasn't good.

>what if Recess (a show that already aired for years) was in space?
>it’s basically the same show but with basic sci fi concepts thrown in
>but is otherwise yet another “kids who go to school” show in a sea of similar shows
>and all the characters aren’t as good or funny as Recess
>and the whole show has an uglier, less unique style than Recess, and worse character designs
>slice of life shows’ core appeal is relatability but they set it in a world that isn’t relatable
Not hard to see why it failed in retrospect

I remember loving it. Was sad it didn't last as long as recess.

It was poorly marketed and the space theme was just a coat of paint in 90% of episodes. The 10% where it wasn't were fucking weird though, like you'd suddenly just get blindsided by an actual scifi episode dealing with a difficult question or an episode where the ship's under attack and the whole cast is panicking about dying.

The only thing that I could remember much about the show is how the characters were either mean-spirited or literal assholes towards the titular character, but then Lloyd isn't any better like rest.

I'm pretty sure anons remember that halloween episode where the sister, who has psychic powers to manipulate Lloyd and his friends into a future where everyone onboard the space station had died of a virus or something and then in turn, his friends were turned into monsters and chased Lloyd into a room where he remained there until he turned old and decided to leave the room after he missed his sister until it turned out to be prank pulled by his sister, I guess for scaring her and her friends.

This show reminds me of perfect summer days back in 2005, when I was 7.
>wake up
>pour myself a bowl a of cereal
>shit on the couch, turn on the TV
>watch a bunch of random cartoons, including Lloyd, Dave the Barbarian, Buzz Lightyear
>get bored, especially if the "Princess Power Hour" was on
>turn on the Xbox
>play some Kotor, have no idea what I'm doing most of the time
>sister kicks me off the Xbox, so I go to my room
>play Pokemon on my GBA until my mom takes it away and makes me play outside
>take my lightsaber with me, because Dooku sent an army of Battle Droids to attack the tree in my backyard
>play like that for a couple hours until dinner is ready
>eat, watch TV with the family, sleep, repeat
But seriously, I can't believe I forgot about Lloyd until just now. Take me back...

I have done extensive research on media and cultural trends and determined that the summers from 1985 to 2007 were the peak of childhood summers, Millennials and early Gen Z really lucked out.

Have you actually, or are you just saying that?

I have but not specifically for the reason of determining what childhood summers are the best, lmao. That just seems like "peak kid" in general from what I've gathered. Video games become deep enough to spend hours on in a non-arcade fashion and start rapidly progressing in capabilities, animation enters a new boom time starting in the mid 80s with enough momentum to carry it into the mid 00s, basically every single summer and winter has some kind of big blockbuster movie that kids can see, pre-social media internet if you even have access to it where it acts more as a conduit for more game-related stuff, still a strong culture of playing outside, just seems like a great time to be a kid in general with a lot of options.

Recess at least had an interesting "what if Hogan's Heroes was set in school?" hook that kids could relate to while setting it apart from the other slice-of-life shit at the time like Doug. Lloyd in Space's gimmick of "normal school life in outer space" sounded really boring for a sci fi cartoon and I personally don't remember if they even took advantage of its sci fi setting that much. Also Invader Zim was right there if you wanted to watch a cartoon about an alien going to school.

Like >>149729017 said they did, but it was a rarity while the rest of it was just kind of window dressing. Like that episode where Lloyd gets a pet that grows from a petri dish and turns out it's from some kind of candy planet and has to be set free there. It's basically just the "kid adopts a wild animal" plot with the baaarest coat of scifi. There are a handful of episodes that go full scifi though and it IS kind of jarring after so many mundane episodes.

This and that episode where they were being attacked by some alien pirates and shit was genuinely fucking dire with them just barely managing to negotiate their way out of getting blown to pieces are the only episodes I clearly remember liking. Everything else I remember just sort of watching if there was literally nothing else on.
