We're done with capeshit this year
Rate them, discuss, and share your opinions on the films and state of the genre.
Personally:
>Superman: 7/10
>Thunderbolts: 7/10
>FF: 6/10
Didn't bother with BNW

For me its

>F4 (7/10)
>Superman (6/10)
>BNW (1/10)
>Thunderbolts (haven't watched yet)

F4 edged out Superman for me because I liked its visual style and contained pulpy old school premise. The Silver Surfer chase sequence in the black hole also beats anything from any of the other superhero offerings this year. Superman felt like it fell into too many modern capeslop tropes and overall looked visually ugly. It had a good cast tho and I liked the ending and some of the supporting characters a lot, just wish the plot was better. BNW was awful and represents the worst of the genre.

Overall, with each of these movies underperforming in some way I think most audiences don't care about this stuff right now. Obviously Spider-Man, Doomsday/Secret Wars, and Batman 2 will do well but everything else seems like a risk. I mean if something like Superman can't crack $600 million, how poorly will Supergirl do? Or an even more obscure character?

BNW was mediocre as fuck. It was trying to fit the vibe of the Winter Solder, but couldn't quite recreate the magic. FF was the best theatrical FF movie we've gotten and the best rendition of Galactus, but that bar is super low. In Thunderbolts I liked that the main obstacle was Bob instead of a typical villain. Superman was the capekino that this board memed BvS would be back in 2016. The irony is that the few people that loved ByS wont like this movie. Though I do like a few super hero movies more that Superman, I haven't seen one with the depth and political commentary that this one has.

Nta but Clayface is supposed to have a lower budget, and they seek to aim it to the horror niche, so out of all of next year's cbm's it has a high possibility to make bank.

Can we really rate FF4 without a director's cut? It felt like it was missing way too many things. It didn't even feel like a movie, more like an extended "Agents of Shield" episode. I dunno, something just felt off with it compared to other Marvel movies. Anyone else feel this way?

I mean it's the only version we have. Josstice League was still judged on it's own, as well as most films that have gone through different cuts. Even though we eventually got complete versions of Blade Runner, one can still judge the theatrical cut.

>superman
7/10. Had lots of good parts. I loved the cast, Luthor, the music, and the Pa Kent scene is fantastic. Had too many characters and plot lines, some of the action dragged. My biggest problem was that Superman got his ass kicked the entire movie. It became kind of exhausting.

4/10. Not as bad as Quantumania or Love and Thunder but it sucks. Leader was the best part and I liked Gus Fring being a weird psycho.

Imbecile, the movie is making less money week by week. Right now, it's expected to reach around $620 million at best. Even without adjusting for inflation and being as optimistic as possible, it still won't surpass the masterpiece that the gunnerpedos were obsessed with beating

Just wrapped up BNW, here's my ratings for the year:
BNW 5/10: it was okay but those rewrites and reshoots really hurt it. Ends up as forgettable.
Thunderbolts 7/10: My favorite marvel movie of the year. Far from perfect but I liked how different it felt from the standard MCU fair.
Fantastic Four 6/10 :The first half was great, the Galactus fight looked awful and the acting felt really stiff in that last act to me.
Superman 8/10: Really good first outing for DC, I appreciate that they aren't afraid to embrace the more weird or out there elements of comics.

>overall looked visually ugly
None of it looked 'ugly' - unless you want to point to specific examples, far too many people here would have seen the movie by now and everyone else will by the end of August once the pirate sites get a clear rip from VOD.

The pocket universe didn't need to look like space and be dark and the 'river' was ugly and a little conceptually idiotic but you also just claimed that you liked the ending, which largely took place in that environment.

>Superman can't crack $600 million
>Obviously Spider-Man, Doomsday/Secret Wars, and Batman 2 will do well
Superman's legs have been as good as they should have been given the word of mouth, but it's only on day 27 as of end of theater business today and it should still end August over $600; BNW made an additional $20M+ dollars just in domestic dollars, between it's 26th day and it's last day, and Superman will easily match that.
SM IV will, potentially, not do as well in the same way JW Rebirth 'did well' but didn't do as well as the previous three reboot movies, and in the same way the immediately previous Jurassic movie (while still 'doing well' - didn't make as much money as the other earlier two reboots. The Batman 2 will be interesting and it's hard to intelligently comment on something when we don't even have a teaser or set photos or casting like we do from SM IV.
People who think an Avenger's crossover film will be a success, especially because Disney is stupid enough to offer to pay RDJ $40M just to show up with an additional $20-40M if it does well, are deluding themselves in the same way people were saying First Step or Superman was going to make a billion (or JW Rebirth would as well) earlier this spring or even last winter.

Clayface is actually even cheaper than The Joker.
Gunn tends to waste money and be allowed to waste it - he did it on Superman (just read the Instagram post from the women who worked on Coronswet's suit and look at the number of people she thanks and she was brought it to 'help' work on that suit, she didn't design it or even make the finished/final suit. Yes, it does take a team because suits get repaired while shooting, they are custom jobs and multiple versions are needed, and people need to make adjustments on the fly, during fitting, but she thanks a ridiculously number of bodies just to work on the fucking CONCEPT of a suit.
And that's true of Gunn's other shit. He wastes a lot of money on things like rights clearance to music he doesn't use for a show like Peacemaker that doesn't need some of the music he chases down.
But if they stick to the plans, Clayface will be cheaper than Joker. So it only needs to be as successful as Annabelle or Conjuring movies (e.g. $200-$300M).
Penguin doing well on streaming will probably help it and coming out at the end of September, right in line for Halloween, means they think it will do well as a horror movie or WB would have saved that slot for say a Conjuriing or Meg sequel and not for this.

Pretty neat, but also a little too late. Ideally should’ve been one of the first projects after Endgame. I’ll forever love and respect the decision to kill off TM at the start. They recognized a character no one cared about and just wiped them clean. That kind of decisiveness would’ve saved the MCU long ago.
>Superman
A lot can be said about this movie but I’ll keep it brisk. Great TV content (watched the camrip on my phone on the couch and later in IMAX) but a lacking movie. It leaves you looking back at Snyder. I think it/Gunn also kinda betrays what makes DC particularly special. And a lot of the love for this movie also seems to come from previous baggage and placebo effect rather than its own merit. In reality I don’t think it’s any different from a phase 4/5 marvel flick.
>FF
It’s not hard to make a good superhero movie, it’s hard to make a great one. This movie ticks a lot of boxes but it fails to wholly elevate itself for one reason or another. The first and foremost is the cast being comprised of 4th string options. The F4 have been historically hard to get working in live action anyway.
