It's practically one big gated community. that's why it's so interesting she ends up dating a guy who's even more elite
that said.. I am curious. how the fuck -would- Daria deal with that? I feel like she just wouldn't.

The saddest thing about Daria is that when you're a teenager, you think she's someone you could get involved with. When you're 30+, you see the seeds of a dry, wiry middle-aged woman who's had at least one failed marriage, failed affairs with women, has roots under her blue hair dye, a whole shelf full of academic feminism, and not a day goes by without her, despite not having children, talking about abortion every day. And yes, Trump, each day.

If this was for crew members, this sort of stuff is not uncommon and aside from the practicality of serving as an invitation, can be a fun piece of memorabilia from your time working on the show.

There was a flyer floating around for the Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends wrap party too. I think most people who work on productions have a file folder or shoebox filled with stuff like this.

She wasn't really hated by anyone in-universe. She occasionally popped up at social events meaning that she was liked well enough to get an invite (although that could also be explained by her dating a football player...she may be the +1), but she was too preppy and type-A to really be one of the Popular kids with a capital P. She wasn't shown to be good friends with anyone aside from Mac and her relationship to actual popular kids like Brittany and Kevin was more like colleagues than friends. It seemed like they all put up with each other like you'd put up with a coworker - you're cordial and polite in person and can share friendly banter, but not actually close.

>a whole shelf full of academic feminism, and not a day goes by without her, despite not having children, talking about abortion every day. And yes, Trump,

there is little reason to think this. She was almost obessed with detecting and avoiding hypocracy.

I could see her getting involved with feminism in college, but she would probably leave those groups when she saw the same sort of popularity contests and behavior policing she saw from popular kids in high school.

BUT

Viacom being Viacom, and I guess paramount now, I could see them forcing her into that mold in a poor attempt to bring the show back and get twitter and tumblr viewers.

I think one of the reasons that Jodie spin off never went anywhere was they were going in that direction and it just wasnt funny

Daria was a pretty good show, but I don't think kids who grew up with smart phones can understand it. They tend to identify with Quinn's obsession with approval more, which is both telling and sad about modern social media. Something that was an obvious character flaw when this show aired is now seen as normal.

Another wild thing is that a lot of zoomers read daria as a priviledged white girl just walking around being a bitch. Like they see her house as a $450,000 house but when the show aired, that would have been probably $75k in a small town. Probably had a slightly reduced price because of the padded room. Normies in small towns used to avoid buying houses like that if someone died in it, mental illness, ghosts.

Daria's a teen. It's likely she'd end up changing a lot in college. Highschoolers tend to cling to a handful of things they think are their identity just to discover a lot of that didn't really matter to them once they are no longer in that high school environment.

I dont think we have proof thst the show takes place in a suburb as people on the west or east coast understand such a thing. Daria wasnt a Disney afternoon show. There is no wideshot showing the layout of the town. We get a few shots of a small down town Street, the school, a few streets with houses, the class sizes are like 30 to 40 people. The show is intentionally vague so more people will identify with it.

If I recall right, all we know about the location is that its not by the ocean and it is driving distance to the mall of America which is in Minnesota. (And that is assuming mall of America is the mall of the millennium)

As for wealth, her dad seemed to be unemployed for half the show and the mom was a female lawyer in the 90s.

The average household income in 97 was $37,005. I'm going to say the mom made 80k and the dad was unemployed for half the show.

If you're talking about the 'mall of the millennium' that was a fictional mall. They never went to mall of america. The creator said in an interview he always imagined Lawndale to be in Maryland which fits with most of the context in the show except for being within a day drive of the desert for that one episode, but it's a cartoon so plot convenience is to be expected.

As a 24 year zoomer, I began binging Daria a couple weeks ago and it's so phenomenal on all fronts. From the characters to the witty dialogue, it makes me sentimental to the time where animated shows were largely episodic in nature but had some continuity to it whether it's a character gaining new enlightenment, involved in an ongoing arc, or having new reoccurring characters. The music is so stunningly good especially when I'm not a music guy myself and it's so apparent that I practically Shazam most of the credits sequences as those have the best music in the show. Some song choices are even bizarre due to me never thinking it would end up in the show like pulling a double take of hearing I'm Blue in Jane's dream sequence of becoming a cheerleader. I thought Daria would be a bitch of a character throughout the show until further seasons began tackling her identity issues, allowing for more vulnerable moments to shared by which made her more likeable. I already think Jane Lane is best girl and I found it cute how bitchy she was towards the end of Season 4 + the movie involving the Tom stuff. Im mid way through Season 5 and sadden to be almost done with this show too.

Yeah as much as everyone talks about like, the issues, the social stuff, the simple fact is that even if you have zero horses in the race of 90s teen culture, it's still just a fucking funny show. Just funny characters saying funny things, and they tie into the plot in funny ways.
I fucking loved when Jake heard there was tryptophan in milk and was using it to relax himself, and then drank so much that he started worrying about the cholesterol.
I suppose your generation doesn't really recall what it was like for smart kids back then, but Daria could have been a whole lot bitchier given her situation.. and yeah, Jane seemed so chill and easygoing, until we find out she kind of assumes the worst of people and then alternates between laughing it off and screeching at them.
I loved that Daria immediately comes clean when she messes up, doesn't try to form some elaborate plan, just .. knows she can't handle this shit, and admits it.

also how fucking good was that movie, right? I still sing 'Turn the sun down' basically all summer

Jodie worked hard to be involved in multiple activities and clubs and play the game. She socialized and went to parties and dated a football player
But she recognizes that when she and Mack are voted to be prom king and queen (or some other similar role) it's just liberal guilt and tokenism. She's already sick of it by that point but she recognizes that even though she can see the cynical side of proto-DEI: it's still a type of progress and it still has value by inspiring the other people in her community

Bullshit. Judge is generally kind to everyone, that's his personality if you see any of his interviews, so he was just trying to be kind. He certainly does not think Daria is a better show than his shows, mostly because it obviously isn't. That's why it's so forgotten while B&BH and KotH are having reboots and have become cult classics

>indeed, in her own show's style at that
She basically looked like that originally, though tbf nu-B&BH doesn't really follow the Judge style at all except for established characters and goes for Archer-style background characters. Also the only reason she was in the movie was because they needed to nod to everyone in the original series. Notice how Buzzcut and McVicker are also there despite being completely removed from the new series which only really retains Tom Anderson and Van Driessen as secondaries (not even the Burger World manager, who was changed to some black dude)

You're right in the collective zeitgeist, but its one guy in particular.

Frank Kozik
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Kozik

He had nothing to do with Daria or E-rotic, but he did album art and posters for a lot of 90's alternative bands: Green Day, Helmet, the Melvins, Nirvana, the Offspring, Pearl Jam, Queens of the Stone Age, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Soundgarden, and Stone Temple Pilots.
All bands the that were prominently featured on Mtv. And he influenced even more album artists.
So its incredibly likely the artstyle of Daria was based on Kozik's style.

Also he killed himself.

all the full-length ones you see on youtube were that same compressed file

> you can look that up anywhere.
all of them are the 1-minute snippet seen in the show
we have never gotten the full version, nor is it known if they even have a full version

No fucking way. Fat Like Me and Fizz Ed remain the two worse episodes of the show's run.

As insane as DTAH is, the B-Plot with Quinn and her parents is solid gold and even the crap with the Holidays is played straight in a way that makes it more tolerable than if it was done by a lesser show.

Fizz Ed and Fat Like Me meanwhile have ZERO redeeming value with FLM being a giant middle finger for those who wanted to see a full on war between Quinn and Sandi while Fizz Ed literally commits MULTIPLE intelligence insulting "we don't give a fuck" fuck ups about high school basics (like saying Football season is in the spring) and the fact that the show features MULTIPLE multi-month time skips AND goes out of it's way to treat Daria as being ultra-impotent and worthless.

Besides being a big shot lawyer, Helen comes from old money (it's explicitly stated as such in multiple episodes, with it being a huge plot point that a large reason why Helen is such a bitch is due to her parents spoiling rotten Rita, her older sister to the point that Helen and Amy got jack shit growing up/told to bootstrap themselves if they wanted anything; to the point that Rita timed one of her many weddings to take place before Helen and Jake's wedding to fuck them over as their parents decided to pay for Rita's wedding and told Helen and Jake to pay for their own wedding, along with Helen explicitly stating that her parents told Helen that they don't gives a shit about Daria and Jane and rather than setting up trusts or even a basic bitch college fund for them, they were going to give all of their wealth to Rita and her daughter Erin instead.

Judge has a hate-hate relationship with Daria. He basically signed paperwork to give Glenn Eichler full ownership of being Daria's creator (which he did create) when MTV told him they were doing a spin-off with her as he absolutely wanted no part of it nor did he want MTV using his name to promote it. And he's openly stated that he hated the show, because it didn't match his own vision of what Daria was which is to say he wanted her to be white trash not the upper middle class offspring of yuppie scum with a super conformist upper middle class kid sister

Years later however, when Judge was doing the first B&B revival, he explicitly wanted Daria on the show and wanted to explicitly declare the Daria spin-off non-canon. MTV said no since they were looking to reboot Daria and when Judge tried to falsely claim to create her, he had the above mentioned document produced and put in his face to shut him down. To the point that the only reference to Daria in the MTV revival of B&B was Butthead claiming Daria killed herself during one of the video riffing segments.

With the B&B revival movie, he was allowed to feature her as a non-speaking background character in the opening but that was that. But in general, Daria is off-limits to Judge because they want to eventually do something with the show down the line and see her as someone who has outgrown the B&B show, especially since Judge doesn't like the idea of her manning her own spin-off.
