Big budget
Nearly as big market because of the expensive stunts to promote the film
Ads everywhere
Cast and director constantly doing press interviews (those cost a lot more than you think.)
Reshoots
Cut theaters sooner
Word of mouth is the film is weird and character assassinates in the oddest ways
Kryptonians are now viltrumites
Jor el wants superman to have a harem
Not even a joke
Justice Gang are all incompetent murderers
Supermans powers even more nonsense than before
Had to cut villain kicking dog because it upset the millenials too much for a bad guy to do anything bad
Lex is gay
Really gay
Also incompetent so what a great nemesis

The optimistic thing comes off as kinda forced because it's steeped in Gunn's usual ironic humor + there's not a lot of focus on Superman's supposed love for Earth or supposed struggle to get up in the morning qnd do the right thing, it's mostly told rather than shown. It's not a terrible movie but I feel like it had a lot of stuff cut, so the mood does not come across as well as it was supposed to..

I don't think anyone is demanding that people stop liking Superman as some kind of commandment (except, you know, obvious trolls) but more that people are just pointing out that its already happened. DC wants to keep its ancient roster of characters perpetually in the spotlight forever because thats what their brand is built around, but that doesn't mean that audiences want the same thing.
Superman is a story built around a set of values that made sense at the time, but just highlights the ideological divisions in America now. Truth, justice, and the american way? No one agrees on what ANY of those three things mean anymore in modern america, we're too fractured by our politics. So any adaptation of Superman has to take at least a soft stance somewhere on what those mean, which means picking a position in the culture war, while also desperately trying to pretend that they have not picked a side because they don't want to alienate paying customers.

This is not the right era for Superman.

>o idea why people dismiss Gunn as being irony-poisoned because this was some of the most genuine heartfelt capeshit I've seen in a bit.
Because some people actually did watch the movie instead of deciding it was good.
It has the same shit the MCU movies have where nothing is taken seriously by its own characters. Off the top of my head there's when the prisioners start arguing with each other when superman and morpho try to escape or "you brought the dog!" etc.
Everything HAS to be undermined.
And there's a literal sequence where Superman ignores a threat to the city and instead of at least portraying that they had it in the background because we're supposed to laugh at it. You can't have that scene and pretend this is the same wholesome Superman that would even save a kitty or a suicidal girl that people claim to like.
The only time the movie somewhat gets close to that is Superman's final speech with Luthor which does work partially because it isn't undermined by a joke. But that wasn't the whole movie.

No, thats a good scene. It establishes that the other heroes ARE doing shit offscreen, and that Superman does not personally need to show up to every problem.
This is important because it establishes that the world this story takes place in is bigger than just Superman and some guys who stand around looking less cool than him in the background. It means that in future movies set in this same world, other heroes are allowed to have stories and final battles that don't get interrupted by Superman dropping in to steal their thunder.

None of this is out of line with the comics. For you to argue otherwise would be to argue that every DC comics story, in every run, for every hero, has to have Superman show up in the middle because it would be out of character for him not to intervene. Thats absurd.

Capeshit movies are fading in popularity. The budgets exploded which shrunk their margins and has made flops much more costly. It's probably going to go back to just Wolverine, Batman, Spider-man like the old days if the next Avengers underperforms. Even if Averangers does a billion, I could see the MCU just becoming Spider-man and Avenger movies for a while.

Ignoring the fact that all estimates point to this film making at least over 600 mill by the end of its run rendering all "ITLL NEVER MAKE ITS MONEY BACK" point moot, I think the real reckoning that most studios(and corpos in general) realize that the US is in for hard times and that the billion dollar guaranteed blockbuster is over, and that studios need to be more practical when making movies again to get bigger profits from smaller grosses.
The reason why the big wigs still have confidence in James Gunn is that if for his next film they only gave him say under 200 mill, they know James gunn will say "I can make it work" and that's why ther are confident in his project for DC(and for the record his Sucide Squad film was under 200 and looked just as good as the Superman flick, he can do good with less)

>Nowadays you can make hundreds of millions and still get called a flop because words don't mean anything anymore
If it makes less than it's budget it's a flop. The Marvels, for example, did make 200 million dollars but had a 300m budget. Even if it did make hundreds of millions, if it cannot make its budget back then it is a flop. Not to say Superman is a flop, and while I liked it a lot, it's objectively not a great look that a Superman movie only did half as good as an Aquaman movie.

You are close, but not quite. The sad reality is that the purpose of the bots isn't to drive traffic DOWN.
Its to artificially inflate site traffic UP so as to disguise the fact that 4chan is way less populated and active than it was just a few years ago. This is also why the bot posts are all asking stupid questions or just making caustic insults: they are tries to invite REPLIES. Either answers to the question, or angry responses and arguments. Because this bumps up site activity a little.

Its all to cover up for the fact that the site is dying before our eyes due to mismanagement, bad moderation, and the era of the anonymous internet coming to a close.

how about a superman movie where superman is actually the hero of the story and not yet just another "comic relief white guy" who spend the entire movie getting rescued or told what to do by female and minority characters.
western writers are absolutely terryfied of depicting white men as anything but weaklings or idiots, let alone actually cool and competent heroes.
same thing with F4, female characters are all tough and serious girlbosses while male characters only exist to simp for them and getting rescued or beaten up by them.
