I always just interpreted the "backups" thing to mean that Cyn has made physical copies of the DDs, while keeping a real-time digital copy of their minds to upload if they're ever fully killed by something to a point that the solverpede program can't rebuild them.

Circusfag here, how does Murder Drones hold up in comparison? Is MD more or less serious? How different is the comedy, and are the jokes consistently funny or are there plenty of expected hit-and-misses? TADC was the first cartoon I watched as an adult and I'm looking to expand my palate.

First and foremost, it's much faster paced, to the point where we're not given enough time to reflect on anything before being whisked along to the next plot beat. Doesn't take its subject matter as seriously. Most jokes are funny (background jokes have a higher rate of hits), but there's some cringe af "self-aware" humor; fortunately, with the exception of the first episode (which was imagined as part of a slower paced show), that same pace keeps you from having enough time to process the cringe before you're moved on.

As a TADC-fag myself, I can say that MD offers a much different experience than Digital Circus does. For starters, watching all of Murder Drones in a single go is a bad idea, as further episodes rely on their viewer gaining a better grasp on both the world and its lore - so it's best to revisit previous episodes before moving forward, especially given how plenty of clues are on display as part of show's visuals.
Show is more violent and gruesome than DC, but at the same time those themes are used for dark comedy, so V murdering a camping student for refusing to be counted has much less emotional weight than, say, Jax bullying Gangle. As others have pointed out, episode 1 is rough on the edges when it comed to humour and dialogue. Most of self-aware bullshit is mostly gone or toned down by episode 2, at which point you will know whether you want to stick around for more.

I'm a little over halfway into Ep 1 now. The animation and artstyle is fantastic, arguably on-par or better than TADC's. I'm already a bit lost I'm certainly hooked, and most of the characters seem rather interesting so far. Some of it admittedly comes across as "I'm 12 and this is deep", but it's not hard to tell that there's a compelling overarching plot somewhere in here and there's going to be a strong tone shift at some point. Good shit, cheers lads.
I'm also noticed Uzi's railgun got a cameo on the latest episode of TADC which is neat.
