When I was 12, I was obsessed with Dragon Ball Z. It was airing on Toonami at the time, and it had gotten me into art. Though I'd draw other things, I'd always come back to drawing my Saiyan OC and different aliens like the Ginyu Squad. One night after school I decided to try something big and make a giant render of my Saiyan and an alien out of construction paper. The head on one sheet, then the body, then the legs.
My mom was there, watching TV on the couch as I'm working. She asks me randomly what I want to be when I grow up. Now that I'm older, I realize it wasn't an innocuous question, but I answer, "I want to be an artist."
She scoffed and laughed just a little too hard. "You better actually learn how to draw then, because these are shit."
Not sure if she was drunk, can't really remember the context, but that statement landed so hard that I quit drawing. Picked it up again about 10 years ago just to draw in /co/ threads and was praised by people there 'if only I practiced'. I was going through some of her documents a few years back, and saw that she had saved the drawing along with a few others. She caught me looking at them and went, "I always wondered why you stopped drawing... You were so good at it!"
Not sure why I chose to share this. Anyways, I work in IT now.
