I don’t get how this pilot has the reputation of being “one of the worst cartoons ever” when it’s pretty much just the same as every 90s cartoon ever. It must just be because it’s Bubsy, he’s annoying but he’s not much more annoying than any of the other 500 cartoon characters at the time whose existence was just being “wacky” and spouting off as many catchphrases as possible.

It's funny that Bubsy actually got good reviews when it was released and many people have fond memories of playing it. I myself enjoyed Bubsy 1 as a kid and still think it's an alright game despite its flaws. Way better than shit like Awesome Possum that's for sure.

Bubsy 2 is where it really went to hell. Different team developed it, and the game was basically a nerf ad with shitty level design and ugly art/sound. Not that Bubsy 1 had the most brilliant level design, but it was miles better. The Jaguar game was also made by a different team. And then came Bubsy 3D, and we all know about how that went. Though somehow those same Bubsy 3D developers developed Syphon Filter a few years later.

I actually feel bad for Bubsy. Apparently when Accolade made Bubsy 2 behind his back and gave the job to someone that hated Bubsy. When he came back to Accolade to pitch some ideas he went to the Bubsy section and saw a Bubdy doll hanging from a noose and fake blood splattered on him. That's got to be an unpleasant feeling for a creator to see his own creation treated that way.

It's the late 90s and Kids TV Is dominated by Cartoon Network, Disney Saturday Morning, and Nickelodeon dominated by Ren and Stimpy

Where would this fit beyond "generic"? There was probably no hard promise in any pitch with the cartoon short on if the game it was based on was even that sucessful enough to drop hard money on this show being a thing.

Even then it would be like Earthworm Jim; a curiosity you saw in the video store back then because the actual show got a shit time slot, barely saw viewing, and then got shoved into a "enitre funny cartoon show for $5" bargin bin deal for all 12 episodes, and even 12 is being nice.

I think the pilot showed potential but they fucked up the pacing (like a lot of 80's/early 90's cartoons did), and made the characters too annoying. The ending building up into a bunch of random shit happening one after another is one of those things I can imagine was funnier during the pitching of it because they likely envisioned it as being more fast-paced, but they just couldn't make it work when actually handing it off to the animation from either poor communication with overseas animators, or just poor directing.

It couldn't decide whether it wanted to be an action show or a comedy, and wasn't smart enough to realize it could've easily been an action-comedy. Fake fan if I'm being honest, always has been. They just took a dormant IP and made it all about themselves and then got mad when the IP holders actually did something with it (which real fans of an IP would be thrilled by).
All this reads as is that they feel personally scorned that their weird fetish version of Bubsy wasn't made canon and they're mad at the IP itself instead of being mad that they invested so much of their life into it.

This is the weirdest fixation people have against Crash 4. Nobody remembers the Scrimblo Bimbo, she was just a plot device in the 1st game before Naughty Dog ditched her because their publisher pressured them to go for something more kid friendly like Coco. Bubsy‘s original art direction was an interpretation of the Fleischer cartoons of the 1920s and 1930s. The rounded, bouncing, alive cars and objects was what I wanted, and after a lot of work, was accomplished. The TV pilot had a more southwest, angled feel, and that was okay since the sponsor was Taco Bell (if I recall correctly). The attitude and wisecracks were Bubsy, though.

I’d even give Sid a pass because he’s obviously supposed to be retarded, but hearing Arnold have a panic attack every 5 seconds and have everyone else “kick the woobie” just makes Bubsy look like an unrepentant unlikeable prick and somehow makes Arnold the most annoying character out of a sea of nails-on-a-chalkboard characters.
