There's that and often times they'll admit it's intentional and it comes with them talking about how they want to send a message to gays. Admitting to the hate and admitting that motive is often what gets people.
It's like how the libsoftiktok lady interviewed a kid who ripped a tampon dispenser our of the boy's restroom. She had him on with his lawyer who obviously coached him because she was baiting him to talk about how he hates trannies and he pushed against them, but he would only say "I was so confused when I saw it that I sort of freaked out, there wasn't any hate in it". It doesn't make any sense, admitting to turning into a caveman retard when you're confused, but it's his defense.
