Trying to appeal to the black audience is hilarious
As a black man I’m here to tell you right now- we quite literally will enjoy anything as long as you present it in a cool and entertaining format, we don’t like static shock because he’s black we like him because he’s cool black people en masse love shit that has zero appeal to them like karate, anime, country music, pro wrestling, etc etc etc, it’s not that we don’t appreciate representation- but when it’s corny as fuck most of us will not tune in, we love schlocky shit like Power and Black Dynamite- everything doesn’t need to make us look powerful or like we “belong”- we know we belong motherfucker!!! Make something cool, Anthony Mackie’s Captain America ISNT COOL and it’s not because he’s woke or black, it’s because he’s a lame ass cornball who can’t even beat the main villain in his debut film

Stop the bs!!

If you’re not black- STOP TRYING TO MAKE PRO BLACK FILMS AND MESSAGES ITS JUST PREACHY AND TONE DEAF

Ryan Coogler, Nas, and Aaron McGruder can make uplifting black content because they understand the culture and struggle and are brilliant writers- Sarah Johnson from Connecticut who got a job at Disney because of daddy’s connections DOES NOT!!

And stop letting liberal black woman lead the charge as well no offense but most women are not capable of writing good stories in the current era we’re living in- they are just too emotional and hamfisted about their politics now

Sam Wilson is the character who somehow managed to lose an argument to a straw man. The writers literally controlled everything the senator said, they could literally give Sam any slam dunk they wanted on him, and Sam still had no reply to "You have no idea how complicated this situation is", he lost the argument to a straw man character.

I think most of /co/ is well aware of this shit, there have been plenty of well regarded black creators in comics over the years. The problem in entertainment these days is it’s run primarily by and for upper-middle class liberal women who think they know what’s best for everyone. It’s no longer about what the audience wants or enjoys, it’s about what they think the audience needs be told. People who annoy you: NAGGERS, literally.

Yeah I agree. It's silly this idea that the show or movie or whatever needs to have a character who looks in a certain way for the character or the story to be relatable. People just want a good story and cool characters, they don't need people who look identical to them all the time. You can like and care for the characters and story even though they look very different.

I have always felt that this push for appealing to specific audiences is just insincere, a caricature of what people believe the audience wants to see. People just want good stories, not some preachy thing.

DBZ is nice but its such a lukewarm boilerplate take to say especially if you want to use it as a paradigm for everyone to supposedly follow. There's thousands of anime or generally good stories to gain inspiration and not realizing that is why entertainment today is as self referential and stagnant as ever. Actually look behind the surface level of what you liked when you were a kid and expand your horizons from there to produce something sincere and new.

FMA03 really pulled off an original story well (in the latter half, that is.) Toriyama was already an experienced and successful writer before working on Dragon Ball. Dragon Ball is the work of someone who knows his shit, not a lucky lightning in the bottle story. He took all the stuff he thought was cool: kung fu movies, sci fi, etc. and distilled it into the "always keep improving" and other good messages. But I think the secret sauce is his experience, especially as a comedy writer. Writing a joke requires a set up and a payoff. In Dragon Ball, almost everything has a set up and a satisfying payoff. Goku does some crazy training and now it's time for him to finally return to aura farm and one shot Napa. Goku's been getting his ass kicked by Freeza for a billion episodes, well here's the payoff as the thing hyped for a billion chapters is finally happening and Goku's now this cool ass super saiyan that feels incredibly earned with the journey he's been on. It's not just meandering nothing and then a tweest or a subversion. Everything is building off of what came before it.

But when I watched Black Panther I could say that some of it felt cringey/stereotypical too, but I guess Killmonger really made people ignore that because they felt it had "depth". MCU stuff all feels cringey but needs a slight thing to tip it over one way or another.

>The "Always keep improving!" message?
That really only appeals to a very small audience, but I'd say that is wish fulfillment. Nobody just keeps improving forever on anything. Especially when it comes to physical strength. You have an advantage if you start really young because it effects bone development, and pretty quickly after your teens physical exercise gets harder to improve and quickly becomes a matter of working harder to stay where you are as you get old.

All of the alien shit handwaves all that away, and then there's Roshi who's hundreds of years and can get comically buff on command just because of magic, or something.

How strange then that this website on a daily basis hyperventilates and actively refuses to watch anything when the main character is not a straight white male. Hell, just having a side character who doesn’t meet criteria creates endless complaining. They don’t even have to actually read or watch the fucking thing, just SEEING a picture is enough to make people rage. People today regularly arfue that ANY non-white character is “propaganda” and only there because of “agenda” while in the same breath claiming “old media didn’t do that” which hilarious because the history of minority representation in media has had to fight tooth and nail for every character, for every second and minute of screen time, because the powers that be are always against it.

Fresh Prince was on all the time growing up. I don't think you realise that a large amount of people actually grew up with some semblance of colour blindness. Not to say there was no more problems but that problems had lessened. And then post financial crash we suddenly got intersectionality pushed at us and told that you need to think about how it feels to be a poor gay black trans disabled person but paradoxically they also told you will never know what it is to be a poor gay black trans disabled person. Universal humanism and the suffering of man? No that doesn't count because only some people can suffer and it is not defined by experience but by whatever traits you have. But we thought that judging people on those traits was wrong? Oh no, now people are only defined by those traits.

You're complaining about a reactionary ideology that has been created by years of pushing some of the most passive people down so much with ideas that contradicted everything they were taught. We were taught not to judge people by those traits, now we are taught those traits matter absolutely and don't you forget it.

It's rampant because it got socially acceptable very quickly because of the influx of migrants. You are probably interacting with plenty of people just as old as us that hate blacks too, but there are so many that have been here for generations and there isn't really a massive influx of them the way there are indians and pakis, so it's less taboo to say you hate one than the other. All colour blindness meant was people denied discrimination was still a real problem, that if you just don’t talk about racism then it doesn’t exist. Out of sights, out of mind, I’m doing good so other people must be doing good too. Just pure denial.

How can racism be a thing if Eddie Murphy was a star?! Despite same exact time Billy Duke, one of the only two black directors allowed to get work in Hollywood, was constantly getting treated like shit because he was black guy, security wouldn’t let him inside the building because they didn’t believe he could be a director, etc.

While you were feeling good about yourself watching Will Smith on TV minorities were constantly targeted with stop & frisk, getting stopped because you were black while driving, people complaining about DEI no sorry I meant Affirmative Action every time a non-white or a woman got a job, gay people and trans people were discriminated and targeted with violence. Your credentials didn’t mean anything because just having a foreign name meant your job application didn’t get a call back and ethnicity automatically got you worse bank loan terms and your house sells for less than if you were white. And if someone told you about that? Oh that can’t be true, you’re exaggerating or lying. Dismissive attitudes prevailed all the time.

And now that you can’t just wave it away you get pissy and blame minorities for having the temerity to bring up their because UwU what about me?

Just because someone likes Jackie Chan movies doesn’t mean they can’t be racist. That’s a children’s idea of how racism and prejudice works. The entire 00s was filled with rampant racism against anyone even remotely looking brown. Sikhs were physically attacked for wearing a turban. If you were an ME actor all you could do was play terrorists. Because that’s another form of racism. It’s not KKK level but reducing your job opportunities to just a negative stereotype is still racism.

>You haven't watched one since fully since 2003? man you missed a lot of fantastic stuff.

Yeah, I know it sounds silly but I'm drawing a blank from that time, whihc I think was actually around 04-06 for me, what other anime down the road til now that i really jumped head first into.

>Have you watched western cartoons made after 2003?
I'd have to look over a wiki cuz all I can think of is of course the Boondocks, Black Dynamite, MorelOrel, rick and Morty...a bunch of shit that kinda just passed me by.

But I feel around the 2010s, i fell off cable stuff and was mostly on YT watching vids there and parody shows.

Its all a blur...time fuckin flies.

It's the feels. Same thing that makes any story good.
Goku becoming Super Saiyan is this huge operatic moment where his anger causes a mountain shattering thunderstorm.
Gohan killing Cell after his decade long arc of lacking confidence and then blasting a his nemesis to pieces with the memory of his father behind him is a culmination of so many moments throughout the show.
The Buu saga is stupid but what do you hate experiencing joy? Fuck you.

Fist of The North Star pre-dates DBZ by a few years and doesn't have the same cultural staying power
DBZ's iconography and characters are more lovable than just buff guys.

>Goku dies and goes to hell
>Runs on snake way until he can be revived
>Meets King Kai, they crack jokes
>Goku learns that Saiyans are from a world with 10x Earth's gravity, just like Kai's planet
>Goku chases the monkey and eventually catches him, so Kai decides to train him
>Goku learns the Spirit Bomb off panel, then Kai reminds him (and the audience) what it is and can do
There was no kind of character development and the only thing that happened that was plot-relevant was Kai fucked-up their schedule and made it so Goku would return after Napa and Vegeta arrive on Earth. Literally it's the other characters actually doing things in the story and training was more of a way to write Goku out of the story. If there was anything more to that then it was in the anime, not what Toriyama originally wrote.

If you argued that Piccolo training Gohan was an example of what good training does for the story, but you literally ignored it for a load of absolutely fucking nothing.

Well same for me in the sense that I haven't watched cable stuff in like 15 years or so but ever since the mid 00s I've been torrenting anime and media in general(that's how I also discovered a lot of anime I would never seen on tv).

Blackness contains multitudes.
My favorite anime is Matrixy sci-fi cyberpunk stuff like Ergo Proxy, GitS, LAIN, and PsychoPass.

I also like those shows for the most part, but sci-fi cyberpunk anime is comparatively rare these days.
They still kinda make stuff in that vein (Metallic Rouge, Maou 2099, Synduality Noir, Edgerunners, Megalo Box, Vivy, etc. etc.) but they rarely come close to tickling the ballsack of something like SEL or GitS. Honestly, most of them don't even match older 2nd-rate sci-fi stuff like Real Drive or Witch Hunter Robin for the most part.
