For what it’s worth, Marvel keeps promoting the idea of “anyone can be under the mask” when it doesn’t really fit Spider-man anymore than it would Batman. Something like Green Lantern would make more sense, but that isn’t why people make ‘sonas. His main villain is Kingpin who flies around on a glider with the assistance of combat armor. Similar to the plot of Darkman and Robocop, Kingpin aggravates crime where Richard lives to tank the real estate, which lead to Richard's adoptive father getting killed and him becoming Spider Man.

This, it's the flak I have with Gwen and Miles. Both worked as alternate universe concepts, especially Miles because he was carrying Pete's legacy in a world without Spider-Man. Gwen had a weird concept for an alternate world, but it kinda worked. The moment you transplant them into 616, they lose every inch of what made them work and instead turn them into redundant sidekicks when you not only have the OG Spider-Man, but also Jess, Kaine, Silk, Ben, Anya, Venom, Bailey and Maka.

I'm someone who makes OCs by the bucketload and I usually have a "sona" for my biggest interests, so I don't really know why I never clicked hard enough with her. I think it's *because* it's too derivative?? Maybe if I didn't stick as closely to the Spider-Man formula I'd like her more. I do still want to use her as a side character in a fanfic I'm working on, but she'd be irrelevant to the plot, she'd just be there for the sake of it.

I think both Spidey and Bats have this problem solely due to their overwhelming popularity. Unless you count any mutant OC as an immediate x-man (which, to be fair, a lot of people do for whatever reason), I can’t name a single other hero with this kind of “I see logo, I put logo on aesthetic character, do not steal” method of OC design.

I think a lot of people who aren’t deep fans of the character hear about it from someone who likes it more, like the “aesthetic” or the shallow premise of the character, and then build OCs off of that to fit in with her friend instead of because she got a cool idea that would work with the title or the powers.

Because Spider-Man and Venom are the Western equivalent of Kamen Rider (Spider-Man) and Golden Knight Garo (Venom). Black and Gold tends to symbolize the ultimate power. A lot of the strongest toku heroes are black and gold. Though between Peter, Miles and Venom, Peter's the only one who makes black and gold seem powerful.
