Finally.

Also, I have to say. I had a situation where I was told a close family member died and mourned them HARD for three days, only to find out I was misinformed and they were alive. NEVER would I react this way they do in fiction where "it's too hard to trust again" or whatever. It was like a miracle getting them back and if anything it made me feel like things were MORE LIKELY to work out because it was like they had come back from the dead in a way.

I know a lot of authors don't have a way of knowing that, but I just can't put up with storylines that go that direction anymore after that.

I don't hate it, I think I know what J. M. DeMatteis is doing, the TAS ended in 98, very close to 2000s and Morlun, I know people hate him now because of Clone Saga, but Morlun wasn't always hated, he is the guy who kickstarted JMS's run. Ezekiel also JMS run. Peter mentioned finding a teaching position, again JMS run. So he's making a Spider-man TAS that mixes and matches elements of early 2000s Spider-man comics trying to emulate how John Semper was doing it at the time, he also frequently tried to adapt modern storylines along with classic ones. And right now I am fairly ok with the issue (besides artwork) and I think Morlun hate is overblown. I think it could work because it's not Morlun by Slott and trying to adapt totem storyline, the very early 2000s storyline by JMS into TAS like how TAS would've done it makes sense.

Do you think JMD really asks that much? I dunno. If I were editorial and I knew JMD if he tried hard would put out something decent and inoffensive (maybe not as good as he once was) so then if you put more into the art that means there less risk overall and it would probably sell better, and this is combined with revisiting the TAS cartoon for nostalgiabux showing even less risk.
But nah they skimped out on the art and JMD is also forced probably to leave the MJ story for later which just hampers both the punchiness of starting right where we left off and also signals to the readers that there is probably another series coming that will do this story if I read that blurb correctly. It just kinda rubs me the wrong way. Like I guess they're scared because it has been so long that if they start there they won't be able to live up to that cliffhanger?

It will forever be something that irks people but totems are still cool to me. Spider-verse stuff beyond TAS isn't.
The way JMD is presenting it here is fine because as of right now it is not any Spider-verse shit. Maybe it will happen in the last issue and yet again they will do another shitty event except with TAS Spidey there but as of this series they are presenting Morlun, Ezekiel, and Kaine as just science stuff run by an evil corporate vampire with cloning tech.
Not all that different from Norman and Morbius. Maybe kids in the 90's would call him a rip-off of both if they did it this way but if JMD slowly starts making Morlun in this, more of JMS's version and with some new elements as well, I am interested. Morlun will start mentioning totem stuff more like with Vermin in this issue and Dormammu magic has already been presented in this universe.
Totems will be just a natural extension of this story TAS has been creating. Ending the series with Peter confronting Morlun who is an amalgam of these villains and one that has ties to his origin could be a good send-off.

It doesn't mention Gwen a lot, but it's there. He released the script back around 2016/2017, and it had a section where Peter went back in time to work with Sherlock Holmes to catch Jack the Ripper, who was secretly Carnage.

It ended with Madame Web showing Peter a bunch of the different variants of Spider-Men through the Multiverse to show how important being Spider-Man is, making particular note of Spider-Gwen and Miles Morales.

Putting aside the fact that such an ending is an inferior retread of the final season, it just shows that he pulled the 'script' out of his ass (what's available seems more like a plot outline than a script) to fluff up the rewards of an unrelated Kickstarter he was running (long story). It obviously wasn't what he'd originally planned, and that's if he even had a plan at the time.

Along with what the other anon said about relief around something not resulting in reluctance to accept good things, I also feel like the more spirited Peter of TAS wouldn't do this whole woe-is-me melodrama comics like to jack off to but instead just plan to have one of those private wedding ceremonies in Vegas or something. In his head he'd joke that if she turns out to be another fake out he still had a good time and no one will know or care but him. Oh, pish-posh. Aunt Anna and Aunt May would've been Silent Generation women who lived through the Great Depression. They literally got married and then moved in with their parents while they were popping out kids and stayed there either until they could afforrd their own place or until their parents passed away and they just inherited the house. Previous to them, every generation that had come before them that they had heard of as besides in ancient history just lived in multi-generational households. While it was the norm at the time, it's not out of place for them to expect Peter and MJ to just live there and inherit one or both of their houses, especially since they live in FOREST HILLS. I'm sure they were more affordable then (I actually tried looking for a good while and couldn't find anything that went back farther than 2005) but it would have still been well above the national average.

If they're that nervous about it they should have just adapted the EXISTING SCRIPTS for the final season of the show. Y'know, the only thing that would make sense and be an actual continuation? Then, if sales were good (and they would've been) they could keep going.

Honestly, I can't see this as anything other than a cult tactic i.e. act like they're giving you what you want but make you accept ONE ridiculous, unreasonable thing that seems innocuous. If you to go along with that, then you're statistically more likely to accept another unreasonable thing in the future, and they just keep escalating what that it is until you're groomed to eat crap with a smile, not getting any of the things you want.

There isn't any reason to do this - they own the right to Semper's scripts. That's why he had to do his whole League of the Rocket Men thing to get them out there (because having the OG cast do a dramatic reading of the scripts and then giving that away as a bonus gift to donators wasn't technically selling Marvel's intellectual property.) So they could've just adapted it 1:1 with no issues. With the way the episodes were structured each one would lend itself to a single issue that's a self contained story with overarching continuity, except for multi-parters, which more often than not were still rather self contained between episodes. Even without the art that would have been exactly what everyone wanted and would have sold like hotcakes, but there also isn't any excuse not to match the art. It's not overly stylized or difficult, it was streamlined for animation.

The only possible excuse is this is either a dishonest attempt at selling an different story masquerading as Spider-Man '94, or it's a cult tactic designed to get us to stop complaining and just accept whatever they throw at us since we complain so much and so loudly. If they can get you to swallow this, once it's over it won't be as hard to pivot you back to ASM and expect you to do the same.

She was trapped in another dimension with Dormmamu, Baron Mordo, Venom, and Carnage if I remember correctly and Madam Web opened a portal for him to go after her. That was the big cliffhanger. JMS excelled at characterization and small character moments in particular. His Peter, MJ and Aunt May felt like actual people and not boring cardboard cutouts they have been ever since OMD, so the book was at its most engaging when it focused on that. Peter growing up while retaining his charm is also something no modern writer can replicate (not even Hickman with USM, his Peter is kinda bland. There I said it).
While I find totem stuff to be questionable and his new villains to be hit or miss, most of the pitfalls are just examples of bad timing and luck. Or outright shitty editorial.

I personally divide JMS era into JRjr period and post-JRjr. The only divisive moment during the JRjr period was introduction of totems, which I personally was ok with, I do not mind introducing mysticism into Spider-man and it was interesting angle, JMS had a story to tell and he told me and there are a lot more individual storylines that make it great no matter how you feel about totems. All example you posted are post-JRjr and majority of the issues could be traced back to shitty editorial decisions. Probably the worst thing I can blame JMS and only JMS for is that Sins Past was a horrible idea in its conception even before switch with Norman, that story just shouldn't have been made. But Civil War wasn't part of his plan, it was forced on him, and he tried to work around it, but you can get how your writing would suffer when you write for a character whose secret identity is paramount to him and Mark Millar decides to unmask for shock value.

It already happened with Hydro-MJ, why bother again? It'd just be a repeat of the same thing, they were both the same person.

I suppose we're just in the nostalgia cycle of the J. Michael Straczynski run right now, but even as someone who's formative comic book experience was with that part of Spider-man I find the retreading of it really tedious, especially for what is supposed to be a continuation of the 90's cartoon.

I recall some anon said it was a stylistic intention to have Spidey's colors used as Venom's highlights while very rarely black would be used for shadows on Spidey in night or dark scenes.
It seems likely since Symbiote Spider-Man uses just blue without red >>150182582.

Marvel can raise a legal battle for the scripts, but they don't actually own the scripts since Semper didn't publish them. It's glorified fan-fiction at best.

If the comic is successful enough, I could see Marvel and Semper playing nice and bringing him along for an actual adaptation of Peter saving MJ. I hope someone co-writes with him, though. Semper's lost his writing talent.
