Amphibia overall felt more fleshed out as a world than Owlhouse did. Owlhouse had magic cellphones they called scrolls that had magic Twitter, and had a magic highschool. Amphibia had a town message board that was an actual bird that was a great gag. Amphibia had a school in season 2 that was only accessible if you lived in the capital of the world. Sprig didn’t go to school before that. This made Amphibia feel like an actual different world not just a flavored modern earth sprinkled with magic instead of technology. Granted I know both shows had the human girls with their phones as well. Overall though that was one of the big things I preferred about Amphibia, I think it handled world building much better.

Two reasons.

>Amphibia had a handful of industry veterans working on it, and plenty of staff that had lots of experience. By contrast, TOH's production team was almost entirely fresh out of college and had this show as their first ever project.
>TOH suffered from too many cooks (and it was Dana's first time writing scripts). Each episode of Amphibia had at least two writers on average, while every TOH episode had three, sometimes four.

Part of the reason why TOH isn't as funny as the other DTVA shows is because from what behind the scenes stuff we got glimpses at, nearly all of the good gags/bits and fun episode premises were left on the cutting room floor. Typical first draft jitters where you gut all of the impulsive/instinctual stuff in favor of taking the worst material and then overwriting it to death.

Actually started to watch some of season two recently. I noticed a tone shift in the cadence of line delivery, and noticed more throw away snarks, and gags. I think they would appeal more to the sarcastic generation that watched cartoons like Daria.

I don't deny that Dana is a fan of horror, but I've never gotten the impression that she's a horror writer per se. It's a general rule of thumb that the average writer or storyteller naturally leans towards certain genres or tones. Whenever a writer tries to write for a genre that they're instinctually/creatively opposed to, it usually doesn't work out for them.

People who are good at writing horror are usually good at making you laugh or cry. It's got the same fundamentals when you think about it. That's how Kojima made PT even though MGS has tons of ridiculous humor and heartbreaking moments in it.

S2 is interesting because it shows that Dana's sense of humor is a lot more dry, but the way she takes herself too seriously undermines any ha-has or deep chuckles. TOH's biggest weakness is Dana's levelheadedness and emotionally stoicism. It's something you see in nearly all the characters in the exact same way, which is why the more volatile or unstable examples stand out.

What keeps me from fully buying that it was mainly an executive decision was how TOH's worldbuilding was established. Even if things had to be somewhat sanded off, there's just no excuses as to how utterly toothless and fluffy EVERYTHING is. It's too consistent for the answer to be "well, Dana was forced into it".

Even Hillenburg was made to shove a school into his cartoon, and he made it work.

With all the weird shit going on behind the scenes that we still don't have context for and likely won't for a really long time, I'm curious as to how her new show will turn out, and how much of Owl House's flaws were the network's vs her being kind of a hack. Honestly it's an interesting experiment that you don't get to see often, most cartoon creators generally tend to be shackled by one thing or another. Without those limits you can either turn out like Genndy (mixed bag record but with a degree of competence) or John K (total shitshow in the form of APC)

Amphibia is a million times funnier and more fun to watch than The Owl House. Not only that, Amphibia is written better, too. Nobody cares about Dana's attempt to make her ugly freaks be gender fluid or even close to being likeable, which she fails at greatly. Honestly, I get the impression that TOH suffered because Dana was unreasonable in the same way that Lauren Faust has been rumored to be. I can understand being overwhelmed by the sheer amount of executive notes in S1a (or how Dana was fighting with homophobic execs at the start of production), but there's no excuse for the first half of S2 still being meh. Or Dana getting banned from certain meetings, allegedly.

Her attitude towards Disney rubs me the wrong way because everything about her art and her tweets on the subject give me the vibes of "I wasn't willing to roll with the punches or be friendly towards my bosses and their ideas". For as much as Alex craps on Disney, he gives off the impression that he'll work with them despite his constant whining. It was Luz giving her speech to Collector about how you need to understand people in order to be their friend, and he responds by asking her if she would attempt that with Phillip. She responds just by grimacing, he then points out the hypocrisy, and she has a moment of realization.
It showed how Luz understood that Belos was still a person, but also that Collector was intelligent/perceptive enough to question the premise of Luz's explanation and that despite how horribly Belos had treated him, Collector still felt bad for the person who he'd spent 400 years with.

I feel like the biggest missed opportunity here wasn't his motivation. Him being lonely is fine.
The mistake was not delving into just how damaged the kid would be after he was treated so badly, and thus how unstable his behavior would be to reflect that.
Collector got betrayed by basically every family he ever had. His kin lied to him and used him to help them commit genocide against his friends. The Titan Trappers went against everything he believed in. Papa Titan imprisoned him despite being innocent. Belos stabbed him in the back and twisted the knife after centuries of supposed friendship.

The kid would have extreme trust + abandonment issues, severe paranoia, nightmares, claustrophobia, etc
A child coping with a history of abuse and neglect by drowning themself in an escapist fantasy of games/distractions/make-believe would have been a really dark and complicated antagonist.
Instead, they used his background as an alien combined with his lack of understanding on how mortals work as the crux of his villainous behavior.

Amphibia is a nice and interesting show. It reminds me of the old cartoons when they used to be good. It's comfy and packed with action, and there are actual consequences given to the characters. The main character suffers the most, she even had to die before God raised her from the dead like she's the second coming, the blonde girl lost her two toad friends forever, and the other Asian girl had to accept that she has to leave her friends and live out of state. For a children's cartoon, this show can be so profound in its writing.

Owl House, on the other hand, is literal doo-doo water. I have never met anyone who unironically watched this show ever. The creator is a giant obnoxious faggot who is only capable of creating trash. I don't think anyone was surprised after The Owl House ended up being a flop and was canceled in the end. It sums up how actually "influential" and irrelevant The Owl House's dead fanbase really is because the existence of the actual "audience" of the show only proves the consensus of the dead internet theory even more. Even the praise that this shitty show gets looks so very artificial and non-humanlike too.
