Adventure time has 138 in total (by merging two segments,besides one full-lenght episode and the series finale which counts as 2 full-lenght episodes,and the minecraft special)

No one was saying the show should've stopped at mortal recoil after s3 came out. What Was Missing and Holly Jolly Secrets were well liked at the time. I only started seeing this opinion deep into adventure time's original run. Skipping over all of s3 because of a couple of elements it merely introduced makes no sense. Full disclaimer, I like the whole show, but I can respect the opinion to stop after s3 because I can understand it. Skipping Dad's Dungeon should be a crime.

You should stop if you feel like you had enough. If you start losing interest in the world and its characters then there is no point in going ahead because nothing that is revealed in the end will matter if you are already bored. There is an overaching story, but most episodes are self conclusive adventures, it only matters for the season finales. Aside from the tonal shift post season 4, what I see most people having an issue with is that later there is some character assasinations, where characters that are seem as good do certain unlikable things, which can range from upsetting to awkward, but I never saw them as unnecessary for the current conflict, as most characters aren't even human and the human is an immature child. But I want to fuck Princess Bubblegum so maybe I am just not a good judge of character.
Tl dr: it is a fantasy show about a fantasy world from beginning to end, but it starts funny and silly and goes emo and silly in the end.

i grew out of tv [awaiting new episodes] before i finished the show, so people saying 'stop when you feel like it' are probably giving earnest advice.

Sincerely the worst CN show I have ever saw, the most overrated cartoon I ever saw, and high ranked as one of the worst.
And no season 1 sucked ass too. Overall painfully unfunny and generic show that if not advertised as this big popular thing would never get traction.

closure and context mostly. i've only seen a couple but i really liked them. personally i thirst for as much original universe expansion as i can get heh. all the enchiridion related stuff shows that the writing team including ward have a huge capacity for great worldbuilding. i am a ttrpg person so maybe that's just a personal thing too.
but for that reason i would recommend someone watch everything released under CN as well if they also enjoy that.

You know you dont have to watch all the episode you are not doing a contract , watch some episodes, do randoms watch like some of every seasons it will give you a good ideas of the stuff

And if you like it you can continue to watch , if you end up to not want to watch éventually you can just stop and watch one day more episodes

Watch it season by season, and if you hit a point when you start feeling like the show's not "for you" anymore, finish that season and drop it, then wiki any lore questions you still have.
The show had the same problem as Steven Universe where it starts going off in a certain direction that gains fans but loses others as the showrunners get more freedom to do whatever they want.

NGL, in both cases in both shows, it felt like the showrunners acted like going to new places and adventuring bored them and that after the shows got enough "pull", they're like "fuck yeah, now we can get to the REAL show" and then the remainder of the show plays out like a female weeb's shipping fanfic.
Which is, again, a good thing for some people.
Out of the two, I'd say AT probably got it worse though since you could tell the show got handed off to someone who didn't really like Finn much, maybe hated him.
