That’s right, for the first time this tournament, we had a deadlock. By the rules, the higher seed from the qualifiers moves on — so Sticks the Badger makes it to the next round! What a shocker!

Smart refrigerators have technical protection measures (TPM) in them, this is a form of digital lock. Companies like GE, Samsung, LG, and others use these features to lock buyers into only being able to use water filters for the refrigerator that have are made by the manufacturer of the appliance. They do this buy placing a chip inside of each filter that tells the refrigerator when the filter should be replaced. If a filter is inserted that does not have a matching chip to the brand of the appliance or no chip at all then it will not work and return an error. Getting on-brand filters for these refrigerators can cost $50 per filter, whereas a generic brand you can buy a three pack for $20, but the refrigerator will reject them because they don't have the chips. You can cut the chips out of the old filters and tape them to the generic filters to trick the refrigerator into dispensing water through the generic filter, but thanks to the Digital Millennium Copyright act (section 1201) this is actually illegal. Even if you own the fridge, the rights of the company you bought the fridge from come before yours and it is even illegal to show someone how to bypass the TPM.

Most new refrigerators are so over-designed they fail within five years of purchase, often because the circuitry is not protected from the condensation that forms within the fridge. An old fridge would run for 20 years with minimal issues if kept clean, this is because it has substantially fewer points of failure.

Always be on the look out for anything with a TPM as you won't truly own what you buy. Don't let companies take away your right to food and water in your own house.

I want to talk about this while Jessica Rabbit is still in the competition: How did Who Framed Roger Rabbit keep such a consistent and earnest tone? I watched it earlier today and for what it's about, it's pretty self aware but doesn't drag itself down over the toony bits. Roger Rabbit was always committed to the bit even when it got him and Eddie in trouble (and Eddie rightfully chews him out for it), but it's because Roger always lives by the idea of making people laugh and be entertained and it's in his nature as a toon to act that way. I think that honest nature is probably why Roger felt less grating as a comic relief than the more malicious, stupid, and "Erm, Awkward!" iterations of comic relief.
And Judge Doom too felt like a proper menacing antagonist despite also being goofy as fuck. The name, his evil plan, and his mannerisms were all silly before the toon reveal, but it didn't really detract from his presence. The insanity of being a toon probably added to it, honestly.

I'm baffled because, on paper, this SHOULD be a B-tier movie that lasts 6 months with box office dimes to its name at best, but everything clicked way better than what the plot suggested.

It had a dream team that would never be easy to replicate today. Robert Zemeckis fresh out of Back to the Future, Spielberg producing it, Richard Williams heading the animation, and Disney and Warner Bros were on board with it. Couple with the fact that they genuinely cared for the thing they're celebrating and you got kino as their fruit of labor. It's literally /co/'s equivalent of the creators of Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, and Dragon Ball coming together to make Chrono Trigger.
