A cliffhanger, unfortunately.
The main antagonist, Skullmaster, begins an apocalypse of sorts, and manages to kill both Norman and Virgil, then corners Max at Stonehenge and takes the cap. What happens then is a bit timeloop where Max manages to rewind everything back to the beginning, but keeping his memories of the previous events. The implication was that Max would use his knowledge to prevent everything, or at least play fate to a more favorable outcome. To my knowledge, none of the writers for the show ever commented on what their plans were for the series, just that it was expensive and got canned after two seasons. Depending on how you see it, it's not as bad as other cliffhangers like Super Robot Monkey Team Hyper Force Go or Xaiolin Showdown, both of which end with things looking dire for the main characters, whereas Max basically went back to the beginning, and had the chance to avoid many of his mistakes.
A lot of fans wanted a third season, and others wanted a movie finale, as either would be satisfactory.
