Dumbing of Agerbean

The saga of Bloomington's (currently) most unlikable couple continues.

It is amazing to me that we are now going on 20 years of Willis lashing out against the experiences of his childhood in comic book form. In all his comics, he's just getting mad as his parents and his church group, year after year, decade after decade. You'd think after a certain point he'd just fucking get over it.

I really have a fascination with stuff like this, Funky Winkerbean and Foob for this reason. They're as much insights into the people who create them and their interests, idiosyncracies and hang-ups as they are stories in and of themselves. You read these comics and you're getting a story about the people creating them as much as you're getting a story about the characters. Dumbing of Age is particularly interesting to me in this regard because it seems partly born from Willis' dislike of things like Funky and thinking he's better as a creator than Batiuk, Johnston, et al but just doing similar things to what made those strips such snarkbait with the addition of an even more abrasive personality. Batiuk is basically WIllis looking into the future, they even share a similar childish obsession with nerd shit from their youths (silver age comic books or Batty, toys and Transformers for Willis) that creeps into their works and both clearly want to be seen as brave and bold for their storytellig choices.

Speaking of, I've been going through and collecting each Funky strip one-by-one for the last couple of months. I'm finishing up with 2010 now so in a few weeks, probably, we'll be getting a Funky Winkerbean storytime.

Anyway, in the end I assume that Willis will wimp out on actually having Joyce and Dorothy do anything. They'll continue talking and kissing but as clothes get removed they'l get cold feet, womp womp.

Or maybe we'll get something more fun like Joycemom's Bigot Sense going off causing her to race down to IU and confront her heathenspawn with a coat hanger saying something like "In this case, the term is never too late." Becky will have to save the day.

Dumbing of Age is nothing but Dawson's Creek, Melrose Place, Beverly Hills 90210 and other 90s soap operas ran thru the mind of an autist that is actually super rude and incapable of socializing well himself.

Joyce will go first, but will start giggling when she sees Dorothy's vagina and can't stop thinking about all the childish names and euphemisms for women's genitals. Dorothy will try to take the lead, only to discover that Joyce is the kind of woman who is paranoid about the way her vagina smells and drowns her panties in feminine deodorant spray, which causes Dorothy to sneeze directly into Joyce's cooch.

Just going back through some of the other strips in this arc, this feels like Willis knew he'd get a bunch of backlash over his using Not-Israel and Not-Palestine as a backdrop for his Joyce and Dorothy being lesbians story (it's like Pearl Harbor) that he had to pre-emptively shit on anyone who'd criticize him for it because ultimately all he and his readers care about is jacking off.

Funky is absolutely better than DoA. Is it melodramatic and given to tonal whiplash? Sure. But unlike DoA the characters aren't all hateful and the pacing isn't abysmally glacial. Also Batiuk's writing isn't colored by obvious resentment towards his parents and a lesbian fetish he tries to disguise as being progressive.

His writing absolutely is colored by some kind of weird resentment towards his mother for some unexplained reason (John's smothering alcoholic mother, IIRC there's a comic where Les randomly bitches about his own mother). It's not as obvious as his resentment against jocks though.

Also, I forgot another similarity.

>especially after Les marries Cayla and Batiuk seemingly stops caring.

I think part of the issue is that the Class of students after became less tied to the regular cast. Think about it this way

The first Class is Funky, Les, Cindy, Crazy, Bull, Lisa, Holly, and so on. They were the primary focus up to the early 90s.
The second Class is Wally Winkerbean, Becky, and others. Their lives still intersected with Funky and the rest, and in general some of them still show up in Act 3.
The third Class is Darrin Fairgood, Pete, Jessica, and others. Only some of them showed up in Act 3. Pete who has no real relation to the original cast mostly shows up because he's a comic book writer.
Fourth Class is Summer, Cory, and others. They had more direct ties to the main cast as they were their children.
Fifth class was... I think it was like if it was Funky and Les were kids in the 2010s, I forget their names. About the only interaction I remembered they had with the main class was being in Les' class or being at the comic shop.
I forget about what happened with the last class before the strip ended. I think like the twins from Crankshaft were in there or something. I'll admit my reading of the comic dropped off a bit in the final years, but it felt like that final Class' stories really intersected much with the main cast or the other later Class characters

Somewhere in the 2010s it was pretty clear Batiuk was more interested in coming up with an in-universe comic company so the comic seemed to be more about that.

These comics were probably drawn after the fact
He also ADDED a panel like 2 weeks later to the strip where Dorothy/Joyce kiss where they say “ummmm did we just make out at a genocide protest?”

I think it's more that Batiuk didn't care about writing characters who were too dissimilar by himself. It's why the only '98 class members to get any real attention or show up after the timeskip are Darin and Pete who were low social status nerds into comics. Or why everyone in Summer's class, including seemingly Summer herself, gets shafted and a lot more attention is paid to Owen and Cody who are... low social status nerds into comic books.

Never because that could be a way to develop her sympathetically (a gay girl raised in a fire and brimstone evangelical community who covers up her own self-loathing and internalized conflict between how she was raised and her desires) when Willis and his readers only want her to exist as a strawman. Remember, his readers were horrified at the thought that she might be gay and into Carla because it would take away their favorite punching bag. Who needs well-developed or rouded characters?

Yeah but that's the other thing, what exactly were Owen and Cody's stories? All I vaguely remember was Cody getting a crush on Summer. Rest was usually him and Owen at the comic shop or commenting on something going on at high school.

Take Wally
>Funky's cousin
>gets into humiliating situations during his first year of high school
>saved Les and Lisa's life when their apartment was on fire
>made the mistake of drunk driving and it cost Becky her arm
>so guilt-ridden by this he enlists
>gets shot down and then presumed dead, then found alive
>gets back together with Becky, marries her, goes to Afghanistan, adopts Rana, gets forced back into military service, gets presumed dead for a long time till found, finds out Becky moved on, suffers from PTSD, gets a job at the pizza place, hooks up with the girl who used to briefly work at the comic shop and later the pizza place

Darrin
>is Lisa's son from when Lisa got pregnant during high school and was given up for adoption. He got adopted by Fred Fairgood, who was like counselor then principal of the high school during Funky's high school days
>90s/00s has mystery about whether or not he learns Lisa is his mother, or Lisa learns Darrin is her son. Is also involved in that drama where the guy who fucked Lisa comes back, but Darrin and the guy still don't know they're related yet
>Hooks up with Jessica Darling, the daughter of John Darling, the TV host who got killed

Like sure, they liked comics, but they still had more going on around them

On top of that both comic books and comic strips were in a state of decline in various ways. Comic strips in particular were having a tough time in the 2010s because of all the shit newspapers were going through. I felt like at the point when he put himself in as Batton Thomas he was despairing over that.

The Punished Becky arc is gonna be hype as fuck.

But you're right that Willis flubbed this so hard Joyce and Dorothy are completely unlikeable characters in this story and it's hard to care about them as a result. We give a shit about Joe's feelings, we feel bad about Walky, we even think Raidah has a point even if Willis is trying to weasel an out by lampshading himself.

A charitable interpretation, or at least treating the characters as real people instead of fictional characters, is that Joe is desperately trying to find something to stop himself from having a full breakdown. Walky can at least fall back on being a manchild to get him through this emotionally, Joe basically had his entire sense of self ripped away. Constantly ragged on for being an uncaring horndog who didn't respect women even though it wasn't really true, makes a genuine effort to change his behavior when he recognizes he has offended and hurt people, centering himself around letting go of learned behaviors that filled him with self-loathing and being a genuinely empathetic person because he's being pushed along by Joyce who saw him as a better person than he thought he could be, patiently helping her with her own issues as a friend, being patient and letting her set the pace due to her naivety and personal hangups regarding intimacy when they become a couple...and then she turns around and immediately cheats on him with someone he probably considered a friend before dumping him for her. The hypocrisy, the double standard, the complete lack of anything resembling guilt or regret, Joyce literally became everything Joe despised in himself. Frankly, the fact that he hasn't completely crashed out is pretty remarkable.

Funky Winkerbean's timeline makes absolutely zero sense for a multitude of reasons and this was resolved/explained away near the end of the strip as the high school janitor, an incredibly minor character who hadn't shown up in at least 35+ years, being revealed to be a time traveller from the future who put Westview in a "time bubble" which caused it to be out of synch with everywhere else because the second timeskip in Funky Winkerbean was ten years later but never changed the calendar date and instead just moved everything to happening ten years earlier (Act I class graduated in 1978 istead of 1988 now). This leads to some plots no longer making sense becaue they rely on things that didn't exist when they would have now happened or Funky being ten years ahead of Crankshaft despie both strips being canon to each other and especially later on characters from one showing up in the other.

Oh yeah I remember in funky winkerbean we saw crankshaft a few times and he was on deaths door in a retirement home
Did he say fuck it funky winkerbean takes place now because time stuff so he could use the fw characters in crankshaft?
Anonymous No.150929998 [Report]
>>150929659
No, he just had the time janny "remove the time bubble" which caused everything to resync or something, I don't know. I don't read Crankshaft because it's dull but last I know, Funky sold Montoni's to Pete who plans to reopen it. The FW characters are still the same age they were in Act III so I guess it's more like Crankshaft was moved up, who knows?

Anyway, what I'm saying is Willis eternally hates Funky and Batiuk so if he ever comes up with something to fix the timeline (they've gone through all kinds of tech changes in the comic after all) it'll be something at least as stupid as TimeMop but he'll think it's better.

It's kind of crazy as fuck to try to figure out a Funky timeline because "Act 1" spans 1972-1992 and then you have to figure out what "counts."
Donna was The Eliminator who played a lot of Space Invaders and Defenders so that has to take place like in the early 80s at the earliest

The Act 2 retcon was reasonable because he established that Funky and the gang graduated in 1988 which still gives leeway to a lot of stuff though causes problems in others (If Wally Winkerbean was born during the time Funky and Les were in high school then he shouldn't be a teenager in the early 90s, but with how long the Wally era was it could be moved into the late 90s and then pretend the Baby Wally comics took place before Funky and Les were in high school) and some stuff is kind of tied down like Wally being in Afghanistan

But then Act 3 hints that Funky's class graduated during the 70s and that Act 3 takes place in the "present day" rather than 2017 (since Act 2 ended in 2007 and he jumped ahead 10 years) and I get the impression he just rolled with how absurd the timeline got (like Crazy Harry remembering picking up Amazing Fantasy #15)
Anonymous No.150930532 [Report] >>150931200
>>150929659
He always said that Funky during the 2007 timeskip took place "now", as far back when he announced said timeskip. So like Lisa died in 2007 and Act 3 should've opened up in 2017, But instead Act 3 took place in 2007, meaning that Lisa died in 1997 instead.

The issue had more to do with how Crankshaft was also in 2007 in his own comic, but he was younger than the one we see in Funky. So because he was winding down the Funky comic and moving them over to Crankshaft, he just has the Funky cast keeping their Act 3 ages while Crankshaft stayed the same.
Anonymous No.150931200 [Report]
>>150930532
It of course makes certain storylines nonsensical though i.e. Becky and John meeting in chatrooms when their getting together should have taken place in the early '90s, Donna and Harry competing over video games since it would have happened long before arcade machines were a thing, everything regarding Cindy's decision to stay in New York and Wally's story since those explicitly rely on 9/11, etc.
