I might be wrong, but I think you just have to stick the disc into the player and it'll play ads and then the movie, so mom doesn't even need to spend another second getting the movie going.

Not after the hundredth time watching them. Not letting the owner of the movie skip to the main menu after the copyright bullshit was cunt behavior. VHS was dogshit too, but retards keep jerking it off despite it being a pain in the ass and completely rendered obselete by DVD unlike other tape formats.

What kinds of DVDs were you working with? Skipping to the Main Menu was always an option on my end.

Sometimes you skipped it by pressing the menu button and sometimes you skipped it with the fast forward button. There was no way to tell.

You know, I own Wreck-it Ralph on 4K, and the only way to access the extras is to use the Blu-Ray, and the thing is that it still has all of the 2013 trailers for then upcoming Movies, and surprisingly the Gravity Falls trailer was technically the first time the series was on Blu-ray (and probably home media)

I never thought about it but that really is fucked I had to see a bunch of bullshit on my VHS tapes before getting to the movies. I pop in a movie, I should see the movie. Three year old me might have been okay with seeing clips and bits of other movies and an advertisement for a Toy Story video game, but I know now I'd hate it.

What is going on with cable networks now faking hd content by playing movies at 1x? Do people really not know what they're looking at when they see this? I was at a hospice ward last month watching Ghostbusters and the hospital's cable tv provider was doing that, and that shit was just...wrong. I mean, it was wrong for ME because 1: I LOVE Ghostbusters and know that movie inside and out, and 2: I knew that was a originally a grainy movie, having come out 5 years after I was born and all, and seeing it look crystal clear set off my BS meter immediately. I got wise to that trick back when I bought my first dvd player back in 1999.

Anon I have no idea what you're saying here, does
>playing movies at 1x
mean something different from playing them at their original speed? Are you talking about motion smoothing? That's something the TV itself does, not the broadcasting network, and you can turn it off (but probably nobody bothers to do so with TVs in public places like that). But I agree it looks fucking horrible.

When the SNES launched, the Atari 2600 was only 13 years old. When the Xbox 360 was released, the SNES was 14 years old, and it was widely considered “retro.” By that same logic, the 360 is now absolutely old enough to be seen as retro, too.

>It's not about age, it's about style and aesthetic.

Even by that metric, the industry has changed drastically. The jump from the 2600 to the SNES was massive. The jump from the SNES to the 360 was massive. And the difference between gaming then and gaming now is massive. The kinds of games being made, the design of consoles, graphics, and UI, modern systems don’t resemble the 360 era at all.

The Xbox 360 is retro old man.

I never minded ads on VHS but I fucking hate ads on disc media. With VHS there was an understanding that these things are kind of disposable. They won't be around forever even if you take good care of them. But "muh disc rot" aside DVDs and blu rays will be around a long ass time and they'll just always have these dated advertisements for movies that are "coming soon" and by "soon" they mean "20 years ago."

The 2000s are to now, what the 80s were the 2000s and I'm slowly accepting that.
What gives it extra whiplash is that it really doesn't feel like we've progressed that much, and some cases are moving backwards. The media that released in the 2000s don't look that much different than what's releasing now

I see you ignored those parts. If something wouldn't be made in that style today or if it is, it's a deliberate nod to a style of the past due to nostalgia, then it's retro. "Style" includes things like computer graphics and product design. Also I'm 37, Anon. It's time to accept that things you liked as a kid are now retro.
