For me it was great and I've enjoyed the ride. I was part of the first generation of computer nerds back when PC was Apple II or TRS-80, then got summer jobs programming and a good job as an engineer, rode the re-engineering and internet waves in the 90s and did well for myself as a programmer and systems engineer. The kids I grew up with that just wanted a factory job or picked a career like being a typist, draftsman or in sales got completely crushed. Over half the people I knew in high school or college are either dead or have driven their lives into a ditch.
