It's genuinely amazing how many 20-something creators think they have a unique idea that stands out from the crowd and they all look exactly the same as each other. They literally all like the same things and have had the same ideas that aren't marketable or profitable and that's why they get passed by for a fucking Gummi Bears reboot.
There's a big problem in Hollywood right now with overreliance on IPs, but there's just as much a problem of all the artists being emotionally stunted Californian millennials who are all exactly the same and don't understand that they need to pitch ideas that normal people would like.
There's a reason why the most popular cartoons of this decade are things like Bluey and Smiling Friends.

Honestly one of the most eye-opening things about the state of the industry was when that shitty Ren and Stimpy reboot was announced and there was this "#bettercartoon" trend going on where artists in the industry pitched their ideas to the public.
Most of the ideas were either exactly like this, some variation of this, or shared themes from this. The rest was all stuff about emotions and characters crying and trauma and identity stuff being the only priority they focused on.
I don't say this as a condemnation of all young artists out there, because there are plenty who are making cool cartoons and comics and doing things that aren't like this. It just seems that ALL of the people who want to be in the "LA Animation Industry" are all like this.

My guess is the networks didn't realise Steven Universe was a thermodynamic miracle and kept chasing that vibe for a bit. Creatives then saw the only things getting greenlit were feel-good stories about lesbians and started pitching exactly that because there was no way they'd fund their other projects. Or at least reworked existing pitches, maybe Neon Galaxy was supposed to be like that Gundam season where mechs were piloted and powered by idols to fight some sort of alien nazis but they removed the mechs, interplanetary politics and all kinds of autistic shit to improve their chances.

The latter moments cannot exist without the former. What makes instances of The Riddler grabbing lunch with Harley Quinn and they reminiscence on their old days so charming is that they are small, human moments in a larger scale, absurd story about humans with insane powers doing supernatural feats.

Something like The Tick is not nearly as funny if you just remove all the parts where he's fighting bad guys or other superheroes and only have a big guy in a costume going to a county fair.
