And then all of a sudden this season it's gone, and it doesn't burn down or anything. Randy specifically sells it. He sells his tegridy. That exact pun is used. It felt deliberate.

And now we get this episode, where Matt and Trey show they're aware of the backlash to this season, but they pretend not to understand the real reasons people are annoyed. Wanting more of the actual main characters is just one part of it. But its also because: they already spent years on Trump. They're giving us shitty five episode "seasons" with weeks between episodes. And most importantly, because the jokes are unfunny and rehashed from past seasons, and Matt and Trey spent years refusing to engage with anything the Democrats were doing. It's damaged their credibility as satirists. Mocking both sides was what gave them their power. Now they just sound like they're being paid by the Democratic Party to "own" Trump every week, and they're mining Reddit for episode ideas. People think they're lazy and they sold out for their billions.

Putting it all together with the massive debt we all know they're in, and the truly insane amount of money Paramount just paid them, I can't help but feel like that's exactly what happened. The Trump jokes are lazy and the episodes are late all the time because their hearts aren't in it. And every episode is about someone selling out because that's what Matt and Trey did this season too. Maybe putting it in every episode is their way of processing. Or a cry for help. Who knows?

God I think this show is unironically making me depressed. I feel a pit in my stomach everytime I think about its modern incarnation. My frustrations with this show keep manifesting in the form of these imaginary conversations I have with you guys, but on a public stage where Trey Parker can hear us calling out his faggot show loud and clear.

Guy you're replying to here, I just hate how they take their characters too seriously these days. There is no lightheartedness anymore, everything has to be some kind of moral statement. They have to always have someone play the counterweight to Cartman in order to "protect the audience" or some gay shit....

As for what you said about Barbara Streisand, the difference between that (and Phil Collins) and what they're doing with Trump right now is how the show is clearly more "angry" than just making comedy. I can laugh at the Barbara Streisand and Phil Collins shit without any context for the reason why they're making fun of them. The reasons might be petty, but that just makes the show seem more human. This Trump garbage doesnn't feel like they're having fun. It just comes across as doomsdaying faggotry.

I think "self awareness" is a writing fad, a quirk of the time. Before when it was in moderation for things like Looney Tunes or a Mel Brooks film it'd be a one-and-done gag, but nowadays it takes centerstage.
I think I'm counterculture and have felt this way for years now, but after Space Jam 2 and Nickleodian Allstars I think the rest of the world is feeling fatigued of it too.
