I’m really hoping she gets over her name quest and sticks with Vaggie. She’s only doing it because she thinks she’s obligated to do it to distance herself from Adam. But it’s clear she doesn’t want to let go with the way she keeps suggesting names that start with Vag that can be shortened to Vaggie anyway.

Hopefully at the end of the season she’ll do a little speech about how she can’t undo the fact that Adam was a part of her life and she accepts that now, and how she finally understands that she controls her own identity whether she changes her name or not. Or something gay like that.

In a tv show it’s weird for a main character’s name to change after the start of the second season. It’s not like it can’t ever be done satisfactorily, but here in particular it feels pointless and offputting.

The main reason I don’t have perfect hope that Vaggie will keep her name is because a lot of queer people watch this show. And a lot of them genuinely have changed their names to disassociate themselves from their abusers, or their “abusers.” And plenty of that group could whine and cry if it turns out Vaggie’s experiences with her name aren’t a perfect 1:1 to theirs like they could want and expect it to be.

Starting this character arc in the first place was already a mistake. I guess they took the criticism that Vaggie is kind of a bland character and wanted to give her something to do, but this was a bad choice.

Watching the leaked song made me go back and watch the Cherri episode of season 1. She's the fag spider's friend and barely knows Pentious. Guess they decided to increase her role in season 2.

Spider really should've been cut after the pilot.

The people who say that Alastor would have no character arc had he stayed the same as he was in the Pilot are retarded. The whole point of his character as introduced is that he doesn't take shit seriously, he's a jovial powerful jackass who just wants to fuck around because he can. His arc would've been that slowly he gets invested in the Hotel and starts actually giving a shit about it. The issue with the actual show is that now he's turned into a petty little bitch who cares way too fucking much about nothing. The best example of what his character could've been is the fifth episode where he sacrifices his friendship with Mimzy somewhat to actually protect the Hotel and has a meme rivalry with Lucifer. The issue with the latter part though is that it's now undercut by the fact that he unironically seethes about Lucifer for no reason and clearly is invested in this retarded rivalry he created. He's no longer the very fun character he was, now he's just perpetually seething and asshurt about everything. At least Vivzie made the right move by revoking his status as a powerful character along with the personality change, because at least now it's still kind of funny. If he had his new personality plus the power, he would've been the most annoying and boring character in the show.

If it means that we could've kept the aloof and jovial guy we had in the PIlot? Sure. It's not like he has to suddenly change at the end to be warm and nice, but you can give him an arc where he actually decides to commit to a responsibility he bestowed upon himself for the first time in his life (and afterlife), giving him a purpose. There are plenty examples of characters who warm up to people, but still keep their edge and aren't neutered personality-wise. Hell, you can even make him the ultimate challenge for redemption at the end of it too, so the show can follow through with its concept. As long as he continuously gets humiliated, it's fine.

I know it seems cool on paper but it's not, if you want a character to be part of the main cast you have to give them flaws and make them fail. Ironically enough, an example of him being overpowered as shit in a really boring way is in the first episode where he was tasked on making the commercial. Instead of seeing him deal with something he's never dealt with before and trying to apply his normal way of operating and then having to adjust when it doesn't work, he's instead begged by Vaggie for half the episode and the snaps his fingers and it's done. Being at the top leads to boredom, which is exactly what prompted him to join the Hotel, and if he can't manage something he sees as pointless fun, then he's kind of undermining the fact that he really can do anything, driving him to commit. On top of all of this, we can still have him getting fucked over power-wise which leads to him truly questioning himself. Just have it happen later in the story and by that time he's integrated himself into the Hotel quite a bit, that this ego shattering poses a real problem to the rest of the cast. You have ways you can take this character that don't involve him constantly throwing a bitch fit.

Also, if you're still not convinced that he would partake in managing the Hotel, then you can still retain his ulterior motives and wanting to get close to Charlie as incentive. Like I said, there are choices you can have with this character that don't force him to devolve into what he is in the actual show.

Technically, in Hell, the name you had in life is your deadname.

Alastor fans don't have to clap like a seal whenever he's being smacked around but him actually encountering struggles he can't just smirk and magic away is a lot more interesting than him standing in the background for four seasons and suddenly going "omg I'm attached to this group of freaks". That was in fact the biggest concern surrounding his character prior to the show's release to the point where it became a running joke with the critics and it sounds like his fans who are crying now bought into that. Having Alastor have real struggles now will make it more satisfying when he overcomes them. And it's not like there still isn't room for him to bond with the hotel gang and for him to become torn between choosing them and what he thinks he really wants.

I don't know what's with the sudden resurgence of pilot-glazing, but the idea that you guys figured everything out about his character from it OR that his pilot writing is all that there is to him is pretty unbelievable. His backstory, that he just showed up one day and started taking out Overlords, is the same. And if they did decide "hey this isn't actually an interesting or compelling character to watch"? Then that's good. I was ready to write Alastor off completely and just wait for his "shocking" betrayal to come but now I'm actually interested to see what he'll do.

While I agree on that one, the problem here comes from lack of show time and the need to sell the story. We are simply introduced to the characters and then the plot rushes forward, so we can't familiarise with them and they can't with each other from our point of view. That is because Viv needed a high stake plot to get more seasons out of Amazon, so we got the exterminations and Adam first instead of gradually introducing the world we're in and the characters.

Right now he's done fuck all for the Hotel outside of a commercial and the only relevance he has on the plot is the fact that Charlie owes him through their deal (which he only got using information that Alastor didn't even really uncover himself). He comes off as so utterly pathetic, wanting people to care about the fact that he was gone for seven years or his rivalry with Lucifer that he's actually invested in for some reason (Lucifer is the reason he leaves the Hotel by the way, because he fucking called him "Bambi"). The second guy clearly didn't read my post, because I outlined exactly what Alastor should struggle with and it's not power or his pride, it's managing the Hotel. Him being taken down in that moment should've been both a sobering moment for him and the audience that there are bigger fish, but as it stands, I don't give a shit about him coping about it, because the show didn't do anything to sell me on the fact that I should see this as a big moment for him. Also, again, Alastor leaving does fuck all for the Hotel, they can easily survive without him. The only thing that might be affected is that Charlie gets a little sad. I want to see Alastor struggle with the choice he made in managing the Hotel, I want to see him be a crucial asset to it and not get genuinely worked up over the slightest inconvenience. I have no reason to root for this guy, because as it stands, he's a piece of shit with an overblown ego who gets humiliated by the plot (as funny as it is) and reacts very poorly because he cares too much about insignificant nonsense (continued next post).

I look at the song member akin to Alastor’s song in season 1 where the characters have an extreme overreaction to a particular event (Vox mocking Alastor on TV, Adam dying by a crazed Niffty that no one has any control of) and get water downed progressively from other factors.

Alastor and Lute aren’t that powerful.
Alastor’s confidence, presentation, and strength that he demonstrates in the song member is from being a big fish in a small pond, and when goes up to the bigger waters, we see that Hell and Heaven doesn’t even glimpse at him and his existence.
Likewise, Lute’s song about avenging Adam is based on her lack of bonds with the sinners in Hell that want to be redeemed, not distinguishing between Niffty, Pentious, and Lilith, and her lack of knowledge about Adam himself and his actual will. At some point, Lute will learn more about Adam and Hell to be more conflicted about her decisions.

It's because there's no structure to Hell. All Sinners regardless of their crimes are lumped into one location that they aren't allowed to leave and are left to their own devices.
