Also the Japanese seem to have a hard on for Dante's Inferno while reserving depictions of their own Jigoku for horror. Even when depicting it, it's never hell itself that strikes horror to them. Like in Jigoku Shoujo, the series is about people being granted a demon girl to send those who have wronged them straight to hell at the price of their own soul being damned when they die, and the horror comes from the 24 hour period leading up to that final decision and the psychological weight of it all.
Other than that, they just seem to really love weird demon designs on the "fire and brimstone" aesthetic. So Hazbin scratched that itch pretty well

Gluttony is one of the seven deadly sins, and Angel has admitted more than once that he was a junkie in life who died from an overdose. So everybody probably assumed that was his major sin. If not that, then Lust is a big one too and it’s plausible he was a prostitute or horndog in life. He’s got mobster vibes but I don’t think there’s any point in the show where he talks about having been in the mafia in his lifetime, the people in Hell around him could think that’s just his style, or he picked it up in Hell. Same way Pentious was a hermit in life but apparently became a lot more outgoing after he died.

I think part of what determines a sinner’s single most damnable sin is how guilty they feel about it. Angel doesn’t feel bad at all about the drugs or sex, but bringing up his dad’s murder hits a nerve. Pentious was a peeping tom, and he was probably selling weapons when he was alive, but he apparently doesn’t give that much thought and he’s far more concerned about not coming forward about witnessing a murder. Even Alastor admits the day before he dies that he believes he is going to Hell. He admits he understands that being a serial killer is wrong.

Maybe Angel did kill regular mooks as part of his mafia business, but it could be he just saw that as regular tit for tat gangster turf war junk, same way a soldier might not think killing his enemy counts as murder. But he definitely doesn’t like people bringing up that he killed his dad. That’s where he draws his line.

And because this is just a cartoon and things need to be simple for the audience, the narrative can’t overly concern itself with each character’s many many sins, so it’s building a formula where everybody gets assigned one big one to tackle.
