I'm Catholic so from my perspective, you can't really redeem a soul that already fell to hell. What Jesus did was created ways to avoid hell. If you ask God to forgive your sins before you die, you can clean your soul before ypu're judged. There's also the concept of purgatory. Its like hell but temporary. This show wants to be The Good Place so badly except it doesn't want to do what The Good Place did (which goes full Gnostic/Buddhist)

Vivzie wants to do the same thing, but she would rather place ALL of the blame on Heaven rather than realize that the fault lies with humans on Earth as well. Logically, people are going to Hell in the setting because Earth has become a total shitshow. Even "innocent" people are still doomed just by being born and then dying.

At this point, there's no logical reason for HOW certain people like Pentious are actually going to Hell other than personal condemnation, but that doesn't really come across as believable considering that good people (or at the very least, people who do MORE good than evil before they die) are getting into Heaven.

The Good Place covers this sort of thing in detail. Everyone since the Industrial Revolution goes to Hell because just living in the modern world means every action you take basically creates an overwhelming amount of negative karma. Pre-industrial societies could send people to Heaven because the individual impact of other people's actions did not overwhelm the average person with collective karmic debt. But when civilization transformed, it inadvertently damned everyone else. Literally anything you do is destroying the planet and harming all life on it, so no amount of good deeds and actions (with selfless motivations behind them) would make up for literally existing in society. The afterlife system not accommodating for the changes made by humans is exactly the point, and it's why the characters band together to change it.

It's meant to be commentary on how the contemporary Christian idea of the afterlife doesn't really hold up to scrutiny, especially in our modern world. The characters turn the Abrahamic afterlife system into an East Asian one, and the series concludes with the cast reaching Nirvana while the devil character reincarnates as a human.
