It's more about the cultural vibe, not just in animation. Right now we're in something of a "Testing" phase, where we move from one paradigm to another. This rhymes with the 1940s, which gave birth to a kind of "New World Order," you could call it, after World War 2. The 2010s were like a "Depression" phase (guess what that's supposed to rhyme with), when minimalism was all the rage and everyone was constantly exposed to everything bad happening everywhere all at once. That's true in a lot of ways right now, obviously, but I've noticed an interesting sort of "post-minimalism" in a lot of modern design; see the Windows 10 UI vs Windows 11, or Rick and Morty getting supplanted by Smiling Friends as Adult Swim's most popular and talked-about show. Reading the tea leaves from that, the 2030s will rhyme with the 1950s, where media in general will be safe and kitsch for a while as we "settle in" to the post-War world reaching its natural end (or, worst-case scenario, "dying suddenly" if you catch my coof). I probably shouldn't have said "never," because of course a new paradigm will mean new modes of creativity; the 50s gave us the start of TV and rock and roll, so maybe in a few more years, something new we can hardly imagine will make all media, including animation, radically different in look and style. Who knows, though. I don't practice Santeria, I ain't got no crystal ball...
