This is a good intro book you can get a free pdf for if you look around. Skipping over all the clandestine operation mumbo jumbo, its a decent intro that gives you the basics on programming it and using it.

I got one of these 3 years ago and still need to read up on how it works. I don't even know what it's capable of, I'm lucky if I can figure out how to scan fm radio stations and find one. Is there literally ANYTHING interesting on the radio waves these days?

The NOAA station and the FM radio is helpful in a power outage. I also use the light sometimes. But beyond that actually using the radio is kind of a joke. Maybe if you and a buddy were talking it would be worth it.

1. Introduction to the Baofeng Radio
Overview
The Baofeng radio is one of the most prolific handheld radios in the world.
It offers versatility at a low cost, ideal for small groups operating in austere environments.
Designed for guerrillas, dissidents, and activists who must work with what they haveโ€”Common/Off-The-Shelf (COTS) equipment.
Purpose
Provide comprehensive guidance on:
Operating the Baofeng radio.
Improvised line-of-sight (LOS) communications.
Tactical and clandestine communication techniques.
2. Functions and Field Programming
Key Features
Menu 40: Factory Reset
Deletes all settings to prevent exploitation.
Default setting: ALL or VFO.
Use ALL when resetting; reconfigure manually afterward.
Voice Prompt
Options: ENG, CHI, or OFF.
For tactical use, set to OFF.
Backlight (BCL)
Controls screen backlighting.
Recommended for field use: OFF.
SFT-D (Shift Direction)
Controls repeater offset.
Set to OFF for simplex operation.
Offset
Standard offset values vary depending on frequency band.
3. Communications Planning
Signals Operating Instructions (SOI)
A logical chart that organizes group communications between field units and headquarters (TOC).

Alternate Frequency
Contingency Frequency
Emergency Signal
Callsigns
Challenge / Password
Running Password (Duress)
Communication Plans
PRIMARY: Main method of communication.
ALTERNATE: Used if Primary fails.

5. A Crash Course in Field Antennas
Importance of Antennas
Most critical component for effective radio communication.
Can be improvised from common materials.
Example Build:
Heat-shrink a rope loop for attachment.
Solder ~5' of feed line directly to antenna.
Crimp a BNC-M connector on the end.
Common Field Antenna Types:
Dipole
J-Pole
Ground Plane
End-Fed Half-Wave
6. Communications Operations
Transmission Techniques
Transmitting via data burst reduces exposure time.
One-Time Pad encryption ensures security.
Reduces likelihood of interception when used with other methods.
Operational Security (OPSEC)
Avoid using plain language.
Use prowords and codewords.
Rotate frequencies regularly.
7. Digital Encoding and Encryption
One-Time Pad (OTP)
Unbreakable cipher if used correctly.
Each message uses a unique key.
Keys must be random and never reused.
Search and Rescue Numerical Encryption Grid (SARNEG)

Final Notes
This manual is written from the perspective of real-world needs in high-threat environments. While not focused on amateur radio, much of the knowledge can be applied there. It emphasizes practical skills over theory, ensuring users can communicate effectively even without advanced infrastructure.

Used to work for global mega corp company, won't say what data or where.

But one day a site was showing heavy interference once a day for 3 minutes or so.

Company paid me to fly out there, sit in a hire car with an antenna on it for weeks to find and track the source. Slept in the car, ate in the car, only left to shit.

Long story short, turned out to be a guy driving a taxi driving past to work all day. Dunno what happens to him, gave his plates and info with evidence to the local authorities (not USA) and it all went away.

So yeah, fuck around find out.

I got one of these yesterday and sat listening to the local repeater for about an hour. It was 4-5 boomers talking about fixing a carburetor, how they can't figure out spellcheck at work, and how much it's been raining lately. Pretty based honestly, not bad for $16.

You don't seem to know what you're talking about.
Quansheng radios may be similar in price/TX power, but allow for much more customization/programming.
This doesn't really matter for someone who needs a basic walkie-talkie though.
