I needed a new roof after a windstorm, could have gotten the whole thing covered by insurance by a team of illegals like my neighbor, but instead I paid twice as much for a team of white guys to do it, had to pay the difference out of pocket. This is the second time I feel vindicated, first time was when my liberal oregon uncle was griping about trump and how everyone will have to pay more for construction projects now, like the exploitation of illegals somehow gave him the moral high ground.

The nail placement is correct. That way it goes through two layers of shingles and enables the black strip (which is glue) to do its job.

I was legit curious about this so i looked up the installation instructions. The nails are broadly in the correct position but its over nailed, the manufacturer recommends 4-6 nails depending on the tile starting .5 - 2 inches from the sides. I believe the nails are also meant to be driven to a specific depth neither proud or recessed but i can't tell if that's the case in the video

He missed this nail, then bent it over, then tried to pound it in anyway, then pulled it out, threw it on the ground and put a new one in.
I am a bit concerned by how much he's swinging that hammer around, scraping lots of rocks off no doubt. Also hard to believe that these are straight and lined up with how fast he's going, but you can't tell that from a 25 second video in the middle of the roof.
Why the fuck isn't he just using a nail gun like any sane roofer? He'd do a better job and go even faster. Did he practice this just for tiktok views or too lazy to find an outlet for the air compressor?

if you nail to low or high you miss the nail strip on the back of the shingle that keeps the entire thing in place. You also end up leaving some nail heads exposed to the elements where they will rust and leak.

Using a hatchet is just a gimmick and showing shoddy work for the world to see only impresses the ignorant.

the long-standing figure before even trump's 1st term was 11 million, we know they always lie so we assume this is a lie, the figure was probably over 20 million even back then. They came over at 3.5 million per year for each of the 4 years of biden, these are the ones that lined up to be counted, assume there were another 1.5 million who didn't line up to be counted. We are now most likely over 40 million, so we can be pretty confident that roughly 10% of the people in this country are here illegally. That's a lot.

They get shit done and there is something admirable in just how quickly and eagerly they go about it.
But they have zero attention to detail, make an enormous mess, and it always falls apart within 5 years.
I know not a single Mexican who has ever read a manual in his life. They just get to work like some Aztec slave driver is going to scourge them with a cord of seashells if they hesitate for one second.

Typical shingles have a 20 year service life.
They do make 50 year shingles which are a lot more durable but few people buy them. The reason is that Americans don't live in a house for more than a few years, so they don't bother investing in long term functional improvements. Instead they invest in superficial things that will boost resale value.

As with all things in American construction it is entirely down to cost. It is cheap, fast to install, and can be nailed down by any semi-skilled modestly high functioning alcoholic with a third grade education. The developer saves on price, time, and labor. The faster and cheaper they can knock out a house, the faster they can sell it. This reduces their exposure and reduces the number of loan payments they need to make before they can pay off the loan.

>As an owner, if you intended the spend the money for 50 year shingles just get a metal roof instead. As a builder they make no financial sense.
True, metal roofing is preferred, BUT if you live in a high snow area it needs to be carefully considered if it will actually work for your house due to snow/ice sliding.
Chimneys? Vent pipes? Gutters? They may get ripped right off.
Roof above another roof? Expect some big dents in the lower roof.
Then you need to invest in snow stops which is another can of worms where a lot of things can go wrong if improperly designed/attached.
In that case a 50 year shingle is a better solution.
They do make "stone coated? metal these days, which may provide enough friction to stop snow sliding, but I don't know.

my house was buildt in '58 with asphalt subroof and asbestos tiles, its still holding on but im replacing it with steel. gonna leave the old subroof, roll a new one over it then crossbrace it and steel tile panels on top of that. a week or so of slow tedious work but thats how your roof last 70 years without maintendance. shingles are almost never used here.

Theres a lot of tension over these dollars man. People work for somebody taking a cut on their labor who wants it done fast and well enough to not get sued. the person buying the roof wants the best one for as cheap as possible. Everybody wants to go home and the bills keep piling up. Money money money. Despite all that most things get done pretty ok over here and there are still trustworthy dudes who want to make things last. You can’t really talk if you’re doing it on your own time.

They're not needed for asphalt shingles because the grit of the shingles prevents snow from sliding.

What causes "snow" sliding is melt water between it and the roof surface which allows the slab to hydroplane.down the slope

I use "snow" in quotation marks because in a high snowfall areas it's really a compacted slab of snow/ice like a glacier.

For this reason any smooth surface roof has dangerous snow slide problems. Aside from snow guards, the other solution is to design the roof with steep slopes which prevent the snow from accumulating and self-compacting in the first place.

In pic related the slab on the porch roof will slowly creep forward until it breaks under self weight which would crush anything below. If it were a little steeper like 4:12 to 6:12 the entire slab could suddenly slide off which is even more dangerous.

They're not buying to rent, they're buying to control the market.
The powers that be realized that if you own all 100 homes in a suburb, it's cheaper and a better return to only rent 8 of them for 100x the profit.

On a steep slope, yes, but on lower roof slopes the sliding glaciers have great destructive potential. I've seen many cases where people upgraded their asphalt shingles to a metal roof without considering this, resulting in having to spend additional money on repairs and then snow stops, and I've seen many failed snow stops because those systems need to be properly engineered to withstand the great forces involved.

On a low slope in snowy areas high grade asphalt shingles or modified bitumen roll are a better investment.

You're talking about production homes, which probably do account for the majority of homes being built. The production home industry is almost entirely brown, but a lot of good subs use production homes to keep their guys busy throughout the year. The rest of the homes being built are all pretty good. There are still plenty of builders employing white men and building excellent homes, but they are expensive. My beef with modern construction is the use of materials like MDF and OSB instead of solid wood boards and plywood and also spray foam insulation. I also do not approve of the modern man's fascination with sealing everything. Shit needs to breathe or you get mold really bad. You WILL get leaks over time. OSB does not make good "bones". It's good for a few years and then it readily deteriorates. Pests and fungus love it because the glue and soft wood. It is poor at handling moisture over time. Same with MDF. Spray foam totally eliminates your ability to monitor the condition of your infrastructure and makes taking your house apart a complete bitch. Quality plywood and T&G sheathing are much better in the long run because they are stronger and they will last longer. This is important because a lot of building code allows you to replace your roof or siding without a permit as long as you don't touch the sheathing.

Slate has the same problems as clay tile, which is they used to install it without hangers or fasteners. Over time it migrates down and falls off. Even if 90% of the roof stays in place huge holes open up and let a huge amount of water in.

This isn’t a problem with modern installations because we have the tools to cut or drill clay/slate quickly without breaking it.

But older houses with slate or clay roofs will almost always need to be completely replaced.

I know this because I own an over 100 year old house and I had to get my roof replaced because it was being damaged very quickly and severely from the water POURING in every time it rained.

Joists and studs have twisted and popped out of place. Entire sections of the house has rotted out. Etc.

Butttt it’s actually much easier to repair all that because wood is cheap and a roof isn’t.

No they do not. They usually buy a perfectly fine house, ruin it with half assed DIY "renovations" and then put it on the market for twice as much. You have never met a house flipper.

>either the above or it's a rental unit
You know nothing about real estate.

>No argument for why entire apartment buildings are empty for years at a time.
Maybe come back to this conversation when you have more life experience.

Isn't the reason so many homes are empty just going to be that people have centralized more and moved away from the country to the city? All these explanations you're both coming up with are things people try to do with this leftover real estate, but it doesn't solve the fact that while they are homes that exist, they are not useful homes for most people.
By the way, these are the rates of reasons for a home being empty:
>vacation home: 33%
>vacant for rent: 27%
>vacant for sale: 10%
so both of your arguments have some merit, but you're arguing on the level of just asserting things rather than backing it up with anything.
Immigrants mostly live in cities too, so the overall housing vacancy rate is not really relevant here.

No. The city is where you find the majority of empty homes. I knew a guy that was the only tenant in an apartment that could house hundreds. There were enough abandoned houses and apartment buildings around my neighborhood growing up that I would break into them with my friends for fun. One of them was a moron polygamist home that had been raided by the police. I know a guy who owns dozens of properties with homes across the US that he hasn't visited in decades. If you truly believe that 33% of vacant homes are vacation homes then you must also believe that the rich are on vacation 24/7.

There isn't a land shortage, nor is there a job shortage, nor is there a food shortage, nor are immigrants the cause of the water shortage, and immigrants are the ones solving our housing shortage. If we lived in an actually overpopulated country or a country dealing with shortages of key resources, I could understand border controls. But we do not, so why the fuck would I be for keeping people out?
>but with individuals so distinctly opposed to your own culture that their mere presence rapidly changes the face of your nation?
I dunno. You're allegedly part of my culture, but I think you suck eggs. I would rather live next to someone from halfway across the world than you. Different and bad aren't the same thing and cultural exchange is good, actually.

The median income trap is very real unfortunately. More poor people means poorer social services and lower living standards for most people. When you import lower wage earners you lower living standards for the poor and working class to the benefit of the upper-middle and rich.

Yes, and that happens because top marginal tax rates were drastically cut in in Reagan's era by policy written by the same org that wrote Project 2025.

There is no significant difference in the ratio of illegal immigrant workers now than there was then. They also do not receive ANY welfare benefits of any kind.

We're not in a crisis of "too many workers." We're in a crisis of a massive wealth transfer from the people to an elite few.

The reason is that Americans don't live in a house for more than a few years, so they don't bother investing in long term functional improvements. Instead they invest in superficial things that will boost resale value.
Wrong. The reason nobody buys a fucking 50 year shingle is because what is the point of buying it if you have to replace it every 20 years to maintain your insurance coverage anyway?

Because you aren't independently wealthy and able to afford a house in cash, so since you must finance it your bank REQUIRES it dumb fuck. And further, you need the insurance anyway because, like I said, you're not independently wealthy so you can't afford to just out of pocket major repairs or completely rebuilding the house if a storm damages or destroys it. And don't start eurosperging about how your stone house will be just fine, if an F2+ tornado rolls through your house is going to be severely damaged regardless of whether it was built by stone masons 250 years ago or mexicans today.

This is the real reason, other than insurance, why we don't use slate.
In Britain, they hardly get wind. Even inland states in the United States get extraordinary amounts of wind, where a roof will blow off regularly. Ironically, if every single shingle is glued to the roof, then that doesn't happen, so in our environment, paper and tar shingles are longer lasting.

That's a HUGE margin. Big enough that those numbers came out of your ass.
In 2020, there were 13,681,156 vacant homes.
Of those:
3,785,976 were for Rent, unoccupied.
394,647 were RENTED, but unoccupied.
1,204,536 were for sale ONLY, unoccupied.
546,671 were SOLD, but remained unoccupied.
4,359,731 were for "seasonal" use.
26,425 were for migrant workers (Would you look at that, a fraction.)
3,363,170 were "other" vacant homes, which had no listed use timeline or goals.

There was no specific list of homes in disrepair by the Census Beareau, because if it's in legal disrepair, and considered untenable, there's no reason to count it on the census, and there's no one to ask about it.
