The old thread isn't bumping anymore. Time for a new Stupid Questions That Don't Deserve Their Own Thread. I'll start:

What kind of optical tool do you use to read things that are at a medium distance? I constantly have to dig around inside equipment trying to get part numbers, serial numbers, etc. off of things as part of my job. The text is small and often dirty. My cell phone helps a lot but if its a bit further than what the camera can pick up and I end up having to take shit apart to get closer. Binoculars are too powerful. I can't get then to focus near enough to read things like data plates. Any suggestions?

the absolute melon who did the plumbing in the house I recently bought has installed the hot and cold pipes the wrong way around everywhere so at every basin / bath / sink / etc. the pipes come out of the floor or wall with the hot on the right and the cold on the left and then the flexi hoses connecting the taps have to cross to connect

should I swap them around at the source to calm my OCD?

I noticed yesterday that my home central AC compressor had trouble starting, it hummed for about 5 seconds (normally there is kind of a buzzing component to the sound, this was pure hum), shut off for a couple seconds then tried again and successfully started pumping. I figured it was just the capacitor because it is over 7 years old and I don't live in a particularly mild climate so it makes sense it might be going out.
However this morning while brushing my teeth I noticed that the compressor actually stalled a couple times in the middle of running, it started up and ran for a few seconds, then stalled for about a second (i could tell because the lights dimmed a bit like when it first starts and you could distinctly hear when that buzzing component disappeared and reappeared from the sound), then repeated running and stalling twice more at about a 2 second interval and then it ran fine including 2 or 3 more times it fired up before I left.
I tried googling but of course google has purposefully made itself more dogshit by the day for the past 10 years so I was only getting results for short cycling like when it's low on refrigerant, which it was definitely not doing.
So does anyone have any idea what might have caused it to stall while running like that? Still going to order a capacitor just in case but as far as I'm aware the capacitor is just for starting and shouldn't affect anything once the compressor is already spinning so that stalling multiple times mid cycle thing has me confused and concerned.

Thinking of getting a laser engraver so i can engrave with the use of lasers. Actually the original idea was to get something that could cut mylar sheets so I can make high quality shitty stencils. Then I realized I could use then as an alternative to wood burning so I'm pretty much set on getting 1. One thing I saw on a listing for one was that it could hit a depth of "0.81 inches" into wood. The machine was only $250, said 10w with a square foot work platform. Is that realistic? Could I say throw a 3/4 piece of MDF on it and the machine cut all the way though it? Mecause that has me thinking I could make some pretty robust router templates. It also said it could engrave some metals but I don't know about that. Could the metal reflect the laser and damage the laser or other things close by?

I've never even considered getting one of these before and I wanted it for a joke but it seems like one of these could have some very real uses for me. I make shit like furniture, signs, knick knacks and ornamental shit. I wouldn't mind dropping $250 right now on one but what should I look out for? Should I use Ali, Temu, Scamazon?

A lot of them have dual capacitors with 1 side being a start capacitor and the other being a run capacitor. Are you sure the compressor isn't running while the fan isn't? Disconnect power and see if the fan turns freely or if there's a lot of resistance. Some fans can be oiled, if yours can then oil it. I think they take a specific type of silicone lube for electric motors but I can't remember. Some boomers told me to use 3 in 1 oil and some told me to absolutely not use 3 n 1 oil.

>A lot of them have dual capacitors with 1 side being a start capacitor and the other being a run capacitor.
Condenser units have dual capacitors to provide a start capacitor for the fan and compressor.
Generally, 3uF to 10uF for the fan and 25uF to 60uF for the compressor.

>>2923431
The buzzing noise is likely the contactor.
From your description, it could be many things.
Failing contactor.
Intermittent connection.
Failing capacitor.
Thermostat problem.
etc.

I want to repair this USA made aluminum ladle from mid century. The aluminum handle broke off right above the rivets. I guess I would just want to reconnect the handle and make it a little shorter.

Should I just drill out the rivets and use tiny bolts/nuts to reconnect them? Is there something more elegant that a pleb can accomplish?

Didn't know that, I'll take a look under the cover to see what's going on. I don't think there is any issue with the fan as it runs for a second before and after the compressor runs and it sounds fine and seems to start fine so I don't suspect it to be bad.

>>2923501
Didn't even consider a contactor or whatever going out, very possible considering the high current load likely isn't very kind to the contacts, I'll look into that too

Wait are you just asking whether to use HEPA filters or MERV 13 filters? Depends on what you're trying to do and the resources and constraints you're working with, but Corsi-Rosenthal boxes are popular for a reason. With MERV 13 filters, you get a ~optimal balance of filtration efficiency and higher airflow, from the lower pressure drop of the filters, will actually clear contaminants faster from a space. You'd want to use HEPA if you need an immediate 99.97% clean air supply, and can supply the airflow to support it in the volume you need. HEPA filters are also usually made of fiberglass instead of electrostatically charged meltblown material, which can be important in certain environmental conditions.

Sir, this is /diy/ not /consumeradvice/.

You almost have all the tools needed to complete a workbech of your own. A saw of some sort is all you'd need. Even a corded saw from Harbor Freight or Walmart for $35 can do it.

I'm not trying to pick on you, but if you plan to do wood work, you're gonna need tools like a saw to do that anyway. It doesn't have to be a masterpiece, some 2x4s, 3" deck screws, and a sheet of plywood is all you need for a basic bench. I know this because I've built 2 this way. Either a circular saw or a jigsaw will get it done.

Otherwise head to home depot and buy a $400 workbench they have in stock.

Same here dude. Sometimes you have to make mistakes and learn from them. You will learn no skills by simply buying a bench and you'll regret buying it because its a $100 piece of shit from china that wobbles or isn't strong and mostly you didn't make it.

Buy whatever saw you want, grab a framer's speed square for right angles and more advanced stuff, put pencil to paper and find out how much wood you need to buy. You already have a few ideas in your head: you want it to be about 36" tall, maybe 48" wide so start doing some easy math. It should have diagonal cross braces on the back and sides for stability. Get a little fancy with it making 2 (or more) tiers, plan out where you'll put your wood working vise, and what features you might want to emulate from nicer benches.

Start by making the ladder-frame for the tabletop, add legs, add the lower section, and evaluate if its stable. You'll learn as you go but just start building it. If you mess up you've wasted an afternoon and $20 of wood. Just start over, its not that big a deal.

Pic is my workbench. Its not great, there are some improvements I should do to it, but as you can see it helped me with storage in an awkward space and I can do messy shit on it.

Any pest control experts here? I have a mouse problem in my car's hood. They seem to be hanging out in the insulation pad (attached to the hood), and there are a couple of nooks beside/under the engine where I see nest-like things and lots of droppings. My question is how do I remove the droppings safely?

I read online you're supposed to spray it with bleach, wait for like 10 minutes and then wipe the feces away. But that always assumes the shit is on some easy to access level surface. What do I do if its in some fraying insulation or deep in the recesses around the engine? I read you're not supposed to blast it with air or vacuum it. So what the hell do I do?

does anybody have any experience with composites?
i have a problem with my fibreglass moulds: whenever i pull a carbon fibre part out of the mould, it leaves a carbon fibre weave imprint onto the surface on the mould which i can just barely feel with my fingernail

the mould tool face is gelcoat (can't remember if it was tooling gelcoat or ordinary gelcoat) backed by several layers of 450g of fibreglass, i use 3 or 4 layers of release wax and then perform resin infusion and demould 2 days later

Break some bricks into thirds (three to five bricks)
Place brick pieces into mixer.
Put a couple of gallons of water in it.
Turn it on a leave it running a long while.
Use a hammer to tap on the outside while it's turning.
Check on the bricks occasionally.
If the sharp edges are worn off, replace with fresh broken brick (or cinder block) pieces.
Repeat until it's clean enough for your needs.

if you're hitting the actual stud it probably doesn't matter, but for actual shelving that you'll put stuff on, you'll want the anchor since it sucks the screw into the wall better and butterflys out

drywall is weak especially in new construction anyways and the screw will wallow out in the hole

Metal tornado anchors are better than those shitty plastic anchors. Don't put a bare screw into a void behind the drywall. You're just gonna ruin your wall. If you don't want to find a way to hit studs, then you can always face the wall with a longer board (or even a plywood sheet or something) and use that as a kind of furring strip to give you something to grab on to.

If you're worried about hanta, you need a respirator. I keep a tyvek suit and the heavy duty, thick nitrile gloves on hand for these types of things. I would take that bitch to a Brown Bear, pop her open, put on my respirator, spray her down with bleach and then hose that lady down 'till she's clean as a whistle. No need for the tyvek suit at a Brown Bear. If your conscience is somehow nagging as you, just spray the stall down when youre done. Also, look up Shawn Woods on Mousetrap Mondays for info on the best ways to kill those mice. If they're mice and not rats, they're easy as fuck to kill.

Small children are excellent at using their tiny fingers and hands for some things. You can use them for manual labor at any age, but there are simply limitations until they're "big enough" to "get it" and pull their own weight. It's quite variable what that age is.

I'm trying to make my own bubbly water but I don't have a keg. I wanted a small one (about 1 gallon) to fit in my fridge but they only sell larger ones. So I bought a gallon sized thermos. It looked pretty well-sealed and was advertised as keeping cool temperature for hours. So I attached a ball lock keg coupler to the screw cap and started pumping co2. Problem is the entire lid pops off at around 30psi (even though it screws on)

Anyways, I am wondering if there is some way to seal the top part of this large stainless steel jug. It doesn't really have a lip so it's tricky. I might just buy a different container if there are no solutions.

How do people in europe who want security cameras on their homes run the wiring?
Each camera needs one ethernet cable and let's say I want two cameras in front, one off on the side and one facing the garden. Maybe more (but probably not right away).
My network equipment is near the front of the house (so two cameras would basically be one wall away, but all the others would need some length cable routing).

For the cameras going to the back I'm thinking to just run a cable along the outside wall under the roof/gutter somewhere, as our house isn't wired with ethernet sockets so there's no convenient way to connect them in any other room, so might as well route them to the front. But I still need to get four ethernet cables from the switch in the network closet to the outside wall. How is this normally done through a stone wall? Drill a big hole for a conduit? I don't have any construction experience, is this something I should call a handyman for or is it easy for a retard to DIY correctly?
I'm mainly worried because it'll be a big hole in the thick structural front wall of my house. I don't want it to be ugly, I don't want it to be structurally unsound and I don't want it to have consequences for shit like isolation, leakage, etc.

Our walls are made from those grey stone/concrete blocks that are common in Europe (cinderblocks maybe? but those are usually hollow, I don't think these are), with normal plaster on the inside and some kind of styrofoam-like layer of insulation on the outside.

i mainly work with carbon fibre
i only use fibreglass to make moulds, which means i work with fibreglass only a couple of times a year
i wear a respirator and gloves when working with it and in addition to that i wear a full suit and safety glasses when trimming it - never ever skip PPE when cutting composites!

>is it true if you get even a scratch on carbon fiber the material unravels like a cloth doesn't make sense to me since you're soaking it in plastic or whatever
carbon fibre is just a woven cloth which is made up of hundreds of very thin strands or "tows" as they're called, and it's all held together solely by stitching at the edges so there's not actually anything holding the shape within the centre of the cloth so to speak (other than the stitching)
an easy fix for that is to use a spray adhesive to quickly cover the entire cloth and leave it for about 30 minutes, the fabric is then almost impossible to distort afterwards

it depends on how the part was made but also how much force you actually put into trying to scratch it
for example, in that pic is an OEM part built by a composites engineering company for porsche and uses all the expected techniques and processes for a company of that kind to make the best possible carbon product
if you compare that to a guy making parts out of his garage, his parts will be much easier to scratch because his materials, processes, etc. aren't as good so the product isn't as good

if i had to take a guess, i'd say that if you took a knife to that part you'd really have to put in a bit of effort just to make a noticeable scratch but you wouldn't be scratching the carbon itself, you'd just be scratching the resin on the surface, which can easily be fixed just by sanding and polishing it - the structural integrity wouldn't be affected at all
obviously if you used a more destructive tool with more effort the damage would be greater and that's true for all materials but you can even find videos of people "testing" the strength of their carbon parts by smashing them with sledgehammers and only creating tiny scratches on the surface

I am building a trench to let my cats move between 2 buildings. It will be about a foot wide and deep, 8ft long. I know very little about soil, does this sound right:

My first idea is to shore it with hardwood stakes every 3 feet that are joined at the top by a horizontal board which will also hold a removable grate (so that theres airflow and so that I can see them). To keep it from flooding I’m installing a drain at one end and slope it, and the grate will be 2” above grade to prevent rainwater flowing in

- Will this stay sufficiently dry in moderate rain? Maybe with a raised floor?
- Does it need more shoring? Maybe boards or some sheet all along the walls?
- Do I need to coat hardwood garden stakes with anything to keep them from rotting

A trench is an absolutely retarded idea but it almost sounds like you're most of the way to building a tunnel. Cats might actually use a tunnel, I dunno.
But they also might decide not to and then you'll have wasted a shitton of time and effort digging and building. Unless you definitely know your cats love to explore nooks and crannies and tunnels.

I also see an issue in that cats like hiding, so if they end up using your tunnel it'll probably be because it's covered. But then, as you said, you wouldn't be able to see them. Not a huge deal but IF something ever goes wrong, and they get stuck or the tunnel is blocked or whatever, it could be bad.

After going back and forth on rather I should get a standing desk or just buy one from the store I finally decided that I should just build my own. I am not very handy though so I'm finding it difficult to figure out how to avoid shoddy products.
My plan was to buy a butcher block and some legs and just drill the legs in myself. I found what looks to be some pretty good custom legs but am having a lot more trouble with the butcher block.
Everywhere I look I see conflicting reviews some saying they are great others saying they are dogshit. How are you supposed to know which is true? Do you just gamble? It would be absolute hell if I choose wrong and had to reship a massive block of wood. First I looked at local places like Lowes and Home Depot but they just didn't give me a good feeling and they had a lot of complaints online. Then I found a place called Hardware Lumber Company that someone recommended. Their website looks nice and it seemed like they did quality work. But then I checked their yelp and they had a massive string of complaints.
So now I don't know what to believe and I'm afraid to pull the trigger anywhere. Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I be going about this a different way?

What's your concern? You want a top that is "not shoddy"?
Avoid particle board and mdf and such. Look for laminated solid hardwoods. Butcher block is fine too probably.
Troll craigslist for free or cheap desks. Sometimes they have nice tops that you can take and just abandon the rest of the desk or burn it or whatever.

When it comes down do it, it's a plank of wood. Try not to become paralyzed looking for the perfect top from the perfect vendor. If it's sturdy enough and you think it looks nice, then it's doing a good job.

But I don't know if that was just bad shipping or inherent to the kind of wood or just bad luck. I hadn't considered trolling around third party resellers, I'll give that a look and see whats around here.

The cable sheath on my headphones has worn away leaving the individual wires exposed. I can't really apply heat shrink because I don't want to cut and splice them back together since they're so short and these were expensive headphones.

Any particular brand of "liquid electrical tape" that's recommended or advised to avoid? Or should I waste the money and give Sugru a try?
Or something else?

Making a picture frame. I need to give the plastic cover sheet a slight convex curve outwards (in one dimension, fortunately). 1/8" over 30 inches. I want to do a decent job of it appearance-wise. No visible gaps between frame and plastic.

Using the attached formula, I get a radius of 900 inches. 75 feet. So I'm not going to be building a simple jig with an arm to hold my router.

Any ideas?

Say more. Is the puzzle a matter of figuring out how to cut the groove in the frame into an arc, to define the cover sheet's arc?
Cutting it directly based on some jig is out. Lay it out first, then use your router free-hand and creep up on the line.

Our old friend Matthias has a couple of methods for laying out big arcs:
https://woodgears.ca/shop-tricks/large_arc.html
Essential Craftsman demonstrates an approximating method you may be able to adapt to a small scale:

Have to wind it by hand.

Make a jig to clamp stator in. Mount wire spool underneath the stator opening so wire can unwind. Pass wire up through opening, lay around the pole piece, push wire back down through opening, wrap around the back side of the pole piece. Repeat until you have the correct number of turns. Then do the other pole piece.

You'll have to put some sort of thin fiberglass (or similar) protection on the pole pieces first so motor vibration won't cut through the winding insulation.

Yes, it is.

Was hoping to avoid the "free hand" part so as to depend on a jig for a nice straight line.

I can probably lay out a line by flexing a piece of aluminum flat in a pipe clamp to get the pro[per offset. And then marking the line lightly. Using a router against the aluminum will probably bend it out of alignment.

Thanks for the links. I may get some ideas.

Just thought of something: Flex the aluminum flat bar to the proper curvature. Mount a more rigid aluminum bar behind it. Fill gap with plaster of paris. Allow to dry. Now I have a nice, curved but rigid surface I can ride a router against.

Flashlight: have purchased cheaper ones on ebay/aliexpress and they dim quickly. Too bulky to jog/maneuver with. The charge needs to last a long time and design be fairly minimal.

Grinder: will use a few times a year. I know that Makita are great, but I could sacrifice durability for a small pricetag.

I have a litre or two of old house paint left from when the house was painted several years ago, but the tin was left in the elements and the top rusted, so when I opened it to use it it basically destroyed the lid. Paint was still fine and I used it on a project, then put the left over in an ice cream container.

I am 100% sure they will use the trench daily. I tried a chicken wire tunnel before, worked fine, they just want to get to the other building that has a greenhouse/patio. This is the same as a chicken tunnel it’s just lowered 9” into the ground so that it’s easier to step over

> Unless you definitely know your cats love to explore nooks and crannies and tunnels.
Yes, don’t all cats?

> so if they end up using your tunnel it'll probably be because it's covered
That’s why it’s a trench with a grate and not a tunnel: they’ll only use it to cross and won’t just sit in it and they can’t get stuck as easily (ie I can lift the grate off)

I'm going trough a house renovation and I am faced with the first thing I've disagreed with the contractors. My bathroom is pretty tall, while I do not want a floor-to-ceiling shower door and enclosure I still want it taller than standard. here is what the contractor told me
>Their standard height is 170-something cm
>Any taller would need thicker glass and cost double because thinner glass would flex too much
I didn't want to argue but in my current place I have the standard shower arrangement, first even if I'm a manlet 170cm is too short. Second, the doors hang from rails, is not like they can flex under their own weight (but maybe he meant while I was sliding them or something).

I wonder if I could build something like picrel myself. I know these are only for decoration, but out there there has to be a way to build a structural metal frame and then embed smaller glass or acrylic panes. This way the glass is no longer what is holding the weight and I could use thinner, cheaper glass.

Yeah this one is a 13mm nut and a flathead adjustment, I go until every link is tight on the bar and back it off half a turn for a little slack.

Decent chips still, doesn't cut through everything like butter when new though. I've had a couple dirt strikes, chopped through some elm and pinion limbs including limb processing of green leaves. Sharpening seems like a decent solution instead of just buying a new chain, am I totally wrong in this? Is sharpening only suited for every day use?

Can a chest freezer survive being outside in the desert? It gets over 100 in the summer and routinely 110+ for days or weeks at a time. I have an area to place it that'll be shaded all but 2 or 3 hours a day, and I figure I can enclose it with insulating foam board to keep the cool in, ambient heat out and block direct sunlight. Would this work or would it just result in spoiled food? No room in the garage at the moment unfortunately or I wouldn't even consider this.

Don't insulate around it unless you intend to cool the enclosure.
The freezer moves the heat from inside the chest to the outside.
If you insulate it, you're just holding that heat in place.
If it's 100 outside and you place the freezer in an insulated enclosure, the heat will rise in the room as the freezer works.
Leave it in the shade with free air access.

You're in for something here. I hope you did your math first. You do not have all the materials you need. You need insulators, they go in each slot first. You need fiberglass tape to hold windings together and probably enamel to lock it all down tight. Else it will humm and get worse fast until it fails because ever, wire is pulled back an forth many times a second.
Then you want to use string to measure the size of a winding. Like thread it in as your winding should sit. Put two pegs in a board so that your string fits around them the same (shape isnt relevant) wind the required turns, wrap it a bit for handling and transfer the winding into the stator.
>>2925696
Use a file and get decent results like everyone else. Chain sharpeners are redundant and only mess up your chain. They have a tendency to draw out the steels temper. Every night after work take the saw and clamp the bar in a vise between soft jaws. Take the file for your tooth profile (round in your case most likely) and sharpen every tooth at the same angle until a fresh cutting edge is established. Use a depth gage to see how much you need to bring the other bits down.

I'm assuming you basically mean a structural box that covers the hole and has sealing grommets etc. where the wires come out, right? Do those usually work for variable numbers of wires (i.e. if I want to run more cables out in the future)?

I have a headset which I've taken apart to transplant into a new housing. It has a mic and two speakers for stereo audio and it's using a TRRS plug.
I've wired this up (pic related), but I keep getting mixed audio in both ears, one ear quiet, one ear fine or a non-working microphone. I've checked all the wires and it seems like the continuity is good, and according to what I've looked at, this should work. Obviously it doesn't so I'm a bit lost. I haven't taken away any components, unless maybe there were some in-line that I didn't see. To my pea brain, I've taken all the original components and rewired them for the new housing. I'm really not sure what I've done wrong.
Anyways, if someone sees what's wrong with this, please let me know so I may rest.

Retard checking in. Recently moved into my grandmother's to help renovate her house. She wishes to replace her shitty falling apart linoleum flooring with vinyl tiles in the kitchen, should I try to place these under the appliances as well? My grandfather was double retarded and fucked up the linoleum floor and the concrete underneath trying to install the oven/fridge/everything else and it's also uneven

Word of mouth is a good method. If you have connections to anybody who might know, ask them. If you're involved in your community or church then ask around. Digitally, Nextdoor.com is a decent avenue of community feedback. You could also look at local Facebook groups. Obviously these digital options can be manipulated a bit by grifters, but the invite-only Facebook groups tend to be true to their purpose.

I've tried one of those and it's legit but it overheats/runs out of battery pretty quickly. Great product for the price though.

I ended up doing a deep dive and the best value I found for an LED flashlight seems to be the Sofirn HS21. Bright, durable, easy to use, IR handwave sensor to turn on/off, and replaceable batteries. $20-25.

I'm looking to make a simple electric kiln that's controlled by a variac instead of a PID. I understand that my nichrome heating element will need a diode at each end, but the temperature will be upwards of 900°C.

I'm a little stumped about what diodes to use, as well as how to attach them to a nichrome wire safely.

Assuming I don't need any diodes, any tips on managing the heat? I'm assuming the wires from the variac will get pretty hot, and I'm looking at 2 hour run times.

So they gave me a written test before doing anything, like “What’s a PLC” and “What does a VFD do?” and I’m a fucking autist so of course dude is like “You’re the only person I’ve seen get basically everything right on this test”. I’m a goddamn truck driver looking at the resumé.

And then they brought me in the shop and they threw some big industrial 6” check valve at me and had a bunch of wrenches laid out to put a seal on this valve. 4 bolts, 4 nuts, 8 washers. Seal was like “torque sequence- 20ft-lbs, 30ft-lbs” so I cross tightened that bitch like I was doing a valve cover gasket on a shitbox. Then I had to glue some PVC and prove I know what the marks on a tape measure mean, and then wire some big motor, but it was 120V with a wiring diagram, 3 wires to L, 3 wires to N, ground wire to the damn green bolt.

I’ll probably fuck it up by being just a little bit too autistic tho. I may have mentioned that they should try Wagos while wiring these ratty stranded wires on the motor, I wanted to go find strippers so bad. I think the mechanic I would be training under liked me, he seemed just like dude I would be riding BMX with back in the day, but the big boss is some New Yorker and I’m a simple Midwest corn fed boy so who knows.

And I did a trucking interview the day before. Hauling aluminum on flatbeds. I don’t know what the deal is with that. They made me back a 48ft trailer into their building and then go cruise it around town for half an hour. Guy complained I didn’t “GOAL” as he is standing behind me in the warehouse waving me in and the truck has a reverse cam. At the last job, if I GOALed whenever I had to back, that’s just extra time for cars to pile up behind the truck. You need to check the coast is clear and slam that trailer wherever it needs to go.

Oh and today I managed to bullshit the phone interview lady enough to give me an in-person as an assistant diesel tech at Waste Management. It’s 2nd shift so I don’t really want that, and it’s like $21 an hour but I told lady give me $25 at least with my CDL and easy 5 figures of tools that are coming with me. if I can get in somewhere as a diesel tech for 6mos or a year and get the little experience plus have a Class A, that is worth like $35-$40/hr or swtich schedules at WM as a full mechanic.

Some of these big companies have the easiest fleet gigs ever. Last gig, the mechanics said I should come to that side, but those fuckers never had an opening because nobody was going to walk away from like $34/hr taking oil samples, changing light bulbs, and outsourcing everything else.

Speaking of, I don’t know why all these diesel mechanic gigs are so picky. They should just pull auto techs over there. Class 8 trucks are all so easy, everythig is super accessible, the only real difference is the high pressure fuel pump and injectors, plus a ton of lame DPF stuff on newer trucks that will all throw obvious codes on the JPro or whatever they use.

They’re big ass drum brakes with pneumatic brake chambers, listen for the hiss and spray with some soapy water and you now know how to troubleshoo air brakes. I did half of this stuff as a truck driver because the mechanics are do dumb that they won’t fix stuff properly unless I circle it for them. I literally got flourescent zip ties to I could stick them all over hydraulic lines for the liftgate when they got leaks and on the inspection write “Look for pink zip ties on rear pass side of trailer”

We got these new trailers and PTO from running tractor (14.0V+) is giving me like 12.7V on the liftgate batteries in the trailer, and mechanic is like “Nahhh that’s fine”

Sheeeeeit sounds like the water plant is going to set me up for the 2nd interview!

Also… I put handyman-mechanic on my resumé recently. I said “Part Time”, but I do a lot of work for a lady who runs a 401c3 nonprofit. Her car is technically part of the nonprofit, so at the point I had to start writing her invoices for big jobs and got paid with checks from the organization, I figured it’s about time to put it on the resumé.

I’ve had a couple annoying interviews though. I had one with some corporate ladder climbing middle management guy who was basically calling me stupid from walking away from a decent paying gig that was ruining my life. I walked out of the interview before it was over and was like “Ok dude, you have clearly made up your mind about me and I’m not going to waste your time”.

That was also a retarded situation because I applied for a driver job with the company which I should be very qualified for, and I applied for a diesel mechanic job because it was an extra 2 clicks. They didn’t even contact me for the driver job, but I got a phone interview for diesel mechanic and spent 2/3 of the phone call asking the girl why they’re calling me for this and not the driver job, and I was 99% sure I pissed her off, but they still scheduled an in-person interview afterwards.

After the past month or so, I’m convinced this is all some stupid game. There’s a lot of like fairly skilled trade jobs that I had a decent shot at but they’re $8-$10/hr less than I could make holding the steering wheel of a truck. I feel like knowing how to trace electrical problems and being EPA certified and doing all sorts of plumbing should be worth more than backing a trailer into a loading dock.

CDL wages could jump soon though with the whole “you better speak American!” thing they just passed.

It's absolutely doable, but it's a shitton of work if you want it to last and look decent. I would hire someone, preferably an actual stonemason. If you have a European immigrant community near you you might be able to find an old timer who will do it cheap for cash. Portuguese are great masons for example. Really anywhere they build with stone a lot produces good masons. Note that I said STONE, bricks and concrete are not the same.
If that's not feasible, look for good examples near you that have held up well over time and ask who installed them.
Of course if you don't care how it looks or how long it lasts you can get it done pretty easily. Look up the concrete sack method on YT or something. Just be sure you remove topsoil and lay the wall on hardpan or other stable material, and be careful of drainage. You really don't want a washout.

You can replace a one pole contactor an electric motor came with originally with a two pole one without issue right? I thought it had a two pole because it had two sets of lugs and connectors, but it turns out number of poles means if both sides are switched or one is shorted, unlike a toggle switch or whatever.

You have a clamp meter? Testing current on startup plus voltage in a couple spots would tell you a lot.

My last house was in a neighborhood where they turned 2-3 bed homes into McMansions without updating the power lines fast enough, and I was at the end of the line. I would get >120V in the middle of the night, <110V at any outlet at 5pm on a hot summer day and both me and my neighbor had issues with compressor stalls like that.

You may not have that issue, but testing voltage in a couple spots plus amp draw will tell you a lot.

How safely can I replace the PCB on a HDD assuming I have the exact same board? Of course the data recovery websites talk about never doing such a thing yourself and let the experts(tm) do it for you at a nice low price.
One website selling the boards mentions taking the existing bios chip onto the donor board, but I'm assuming I'd have to do some soldering and not only do I not have the equipment, I have never soldered in my life. Which makes me wonder what would happen if I didn't do that. I don't recall there ever being updates to the firmware. I guess the donor could be from another generation.

I had this happen once.
The fan hub is crimped to the blade by the rolled edge where the hub goes through the blade(s)
I my instance it had worked loose and the hub spun with the motor shaft but the blades just sat there.
I took the blades off the motor and welded a couple of spots between the hub and the blades.
That fixed it.

Might check the set-screw first to be sure it's tight and in the flat on the shaft.
If it was put together with the screw on the round part of the shaft or not tightened properly, it could have worked loose.

You will very likely have to swap the chip and you will likely fuck up the soldering if you never soldered before. And you will waste like $40 on a cheap soldering kit if you never plan to solder again. It's a nice hobby to learn but if you simply want this one HDD fixed, just take it to a shop. What will it cost, like $50 max?

Maybe you could buy the board anyway and see if it works without swapping the chip. All you have to do is screw. And if it doesn't work, then you can hand it to the repair shop and ask for a lower price since you have the parts.

Yea look into troubleshooting that contactor. Maybe you will see a big voltage drop while the compressor is running if you test voltage on the in and out of the contactor. Electrical switches burn out after some time, it’s just a thing, so it’s entirely possible it’s all crusty and high resistance and you’re getting little low voltage periods that stall the compressor.

But I’m a shitposter who took some AC courses online and can legally buy R-22, so take it with a grain of salt.

Yea and we got into a big argument with HR at the last job about this. Inflation was like 20% over two years, rents and home prices in Florida nearly doubled around the same time, and we were getting 3% raises.

And the argument was dude from New Jersey talking to his old coworkers up there at the same company, they’re making like 20% more than we were.

And HR goes “Well places like NYC and California are a special case!” and then we get in the fight because those wages were NJ, not fucking Manhattan, and a 1600sq.ft. 3/2 home in this area not in the hood went from $350k to $600k+ within 5 years,

I'm the floor anon, basically it looks like grandpa shredded up the linoleum trying to get a dishwasher into its slot (it has a counter over it) and it's possible he could've damaged the floor underneath the linoleum. I was told when it comes to vinyl tiles you need a super flat surface cus minor deviations can cause buckling. Is there anything you'd recommend placing underneath oven/dishwasher?

I made a wooden folding chair and I have a big piece of canvas duck fabric or whatever that I will use as the actual seat part.

I have it folded into the right shape from a large square into a narrower shape that'll go into the chair. see picrel.

I need to secure the fabric to itself at the red dotted line so it doesn't fall apart, and I do not want to sew this because I do not have a sewing machine and it seems like a pain to do by hand.

I'm thinking of maybe stapling it, or riveting it which I think would look better and hold up better, but I guess I need to hole punch the fabric first before I do that, is this true? If I want to rivet together a few layers of fabric do I need to use a hole punch or can I get away with making an X shaped cut or something instead?

Also, I want to tie it together with some cord to form a closed loop, and I wanted to do this using grommets. Do I need a hole punch for grommets too?

I decided to change an ancient metal light fixture in my foyer and just wanted so confirmation about the wires. The box has two white wires twisted together, an orange wire, and a ground screw. The white wires were connected to a braided white wire on the old metal light fixture and the orange wire to a grey braided wire. When I checked the wires with a multimeter, the orange wire returned returned 120 volts and the white wires returned basically zero. Am I correct in assuming orange is hot and white is neutral then? Never seen an orange wire before desu. Also what will happen if I wire my new built in LED light in reverse?

Yea the orange is probably the hot wire. If it’s coming from a switch, sometimes there’s a colored wire like red for the switched hot.

If you hook the new LED up backwards, hopefully it just won’t work and wont fry

I have a butcher block picked out it's 6 feet in length and 25 inches wide, 1 1/2 inches thick Hard Maple. Was planning on getting some sturdy steel A frame legs. But I was wondering if I need some sort of brace or something? I see stuff like the standing desks and they have a large metal beam running across the middle. Do I need to get something like that to keep it from sagging or possibly cracking in the middle since all my computer stuff is going to be there in the middle? I saw these things on amazon? Would they work? Do I even need something like that or am I worrying about nothing?

Depends on the rest of your skillset. Are you installing basic bitch overhead doors and wealthy people's gate hardware? Or are you trenching, running conduit and wire, digging a hole for the posts, connecting smart home equipment etc?

If you've held a job for a couple years and are just bored, you can basically go be a journeyman working in any trade as long as you can convince them you're quick to learn and good with your hands. If you tell them you turn springs and install aluminum panels, they'll assume you're an idiot. Show off a desirable skillset and you can go into whatever trade interests you.

I do that to but work industrial most of the time, shit like this.
It's still the same concept just on a larger scale and you get to operate boom and scissor lifts, the bulk of the job is drilling into concrete or steal beams to install the rails then install panels, motors, sensors and that kind of shit.

I've not been doing the job for long and I somewhat like it but it seems pretty dead end with not much room to grow, and the money sucks.

Sounds like most tradie jobs. It doesn't sound like you're doing any particularly skilled labor though. Just about anybody can drill into concrete, steel, and stick bolts in holes. Yeah you might be working on some $200,000 item, doesn't mean you're entitled to much of it. Again, just how trades work.

If you want more pay you have to have a skillset that not many people have. Thats the long and short.

Meh the CDL is sort of gay. Or at least I felt that way after doing it for a couple years. If you run a local route and you have any sort of ambition or intelligence, you will feel like you hit a ceiling in your driver career quite fast. Unless you want to go owner op and eventually manage a fleet of trucks, but that’s all stacking money.

Also I just got offered a diesel tech job this afternoon from a big ass company. I may be retarded, but I asked if I can call the lady back Monday with an answer.

I’m very likely doing something stupid, but this company seemed like a corporate hell that was another level compared to my past employer which was a very large corporate hell.

Like I’m walking in the front door for the interview, and there’s one single reserved parking spot next to the handicapped spots, it’s for “Female Driver of the Year”

So I texted water plant dude because that seemed like a place I could actually spend the next 10+ years and was like “Hey, when yout office manager lady is back in, let me know. I have a good offer on the table but I like you guys better so I’m stalling with them.”

I didn’t do OTR.

I had a difficult physical trucking job doing local deliveries for 7 years but had to unload everything. Then I got the promotion and got the big stores where I took my electric power jack and rolled 4 pallets into Walmart, scanned a couple things, hit on the cute Latina, and then moved to the next store. So it’s like 10-20min drive, half an hour at a store, repeat.

But like I’ve seen so many people in retail over those years like “I’m sick of this! I’m getting my CDL!”

So now as I’m looking at jobs, it’s sort of wild. Like I’m applying to equipment rental companies, they have a tractor trailer driver position and a diesel mechanic gig. And I apply for both because I do auto mechanic side gigs. I don’t even get a phone call for the driving job even though I have 11 years with zero accidents or tickets, but they bring me for an in-person to talk about the diesel mechanic gig with weekend auto repair and residential handyman experience.

So I tell everybody on /o/ asking about the CDL, get into literally any other trade besides CDL or auto mechanic. There’s super high demand for heavy duty mechanic, solar power and electricians doing Tesla chargers, and a shit ton of HVAC jobs. Plumber too but that’s probably the worst, HVAC is the most knowledge but good demand and pay, electrician is #2, plumbing #3. Heavy equipment operators are in demand too, crane operators for sure but there’s some important certs to do that.

Also the treatment plant didn’t smell too bad at all, and as I said I was surprised it didn’t smell worse, we were walking past the shittiest area. It’s in a populated area so they can’t have feces smell like crazy. He said like one day a month it gets funky when they do some process.

One more thing, driving OTR is fucking stupid. Maybe if you’re 22 and super autistic and don’t mind living in a truck with an anime doll.

Remember DOT hours are a thing. You can only drive 11hrs and then you have to shut down for 10hrs wherever you are and it’s computer-gps monitored with e-logs.

And then every 60/70hrs, you have to shut down for 34hrs, which means you can’t move your truck from the truck stop or receiving dock or warehouse for a day in a half or you get a violation.

If you drive for a big company, you’re at work 24hrs a day, 350 days a year for like $60k-70k. I did the math on it once and it’s pathetic hourly wage, like less than minimum wage.

In the apartment that I moved in there’s laminated wood all over except for the bathroom
The washing machine is on laminated wood
All the appliances are new and haven’t been used before
What can I do to prevent spilling/erosion of the laminated floor underneath the washing machine?
I was thinking to get a rubber mat to fit it under the washing machine and some rubber pads. Maybe something thicker so in case there’s spilling I can have access underneath the washing machine to mop the water out.
I’m thinking the mat should have a lip so the water won’t spill around
The washing machine has some rubber pads, but they’re small
Do you think this is good enough?

The kinds that come from washing machines. The fill float can fail causing the water to just keep running. The internal plumbing can fail. The pipes connecting in the back can fail. That tray is holding 10 gallons of water, then you've got a 10 gallon tray to deal with under a 500lb machine IF you blocked off the drain hole to the tray. Then what?

If there's voltage on it, check for voltage on the suspect side and wiggle it around. If you get voltage sometimes then that's it.

If there's no voltage (probably better) you need to go to ohms mode and clip onto the far end with one side and test the other. It should be almost 0 ohms, maybe 5 at most, wiggle the wire to see of it goes from 3M ohm to a few k, then that's your problem.

If it's always good resistance/ voltage then trouble is elsewhere

But also with smashed wires like that, if you’re having issues, straight voltage and resistance doesn’t tell much. You need to load test it.

Like you can have stranded wire that is damaged and you still get a healthy low resistance across it with a meter and 12.5V+ at the light socket. But if you load test it by trying to power on a light at the socket or anything when the wire is held on by a strand or two, you’re going to get a big voltage drop and have 12.5V+ measuring before the damage and way lower after the damaged part.

The wiggle test anon said is also good for shitty connections and stuff. But multimeters do resistance tests with a very low power level, so if a wiggle makes it go from 100% connection to 10% but never really breaks the connection, you may have to put a load on there.

Or you find exactly that kind of pump in a dumpster and hope that it was trashed not because of a failed cord.

what do you think of this?
weed by hand the big weeds with big tap roots
after its all cleared out, you continually have little weeds growing up -> torch the shit out of these guys because they are immature and the roots may die

As you torch the shit out of everything i heard that the heat has an advantage of killing the seed bank which is how the weeds keep coming back week after week

The only way to get rid of weeds is to use some strong chemical that kills all plant based life like up to 10 meters deep into the ground, then plant normal grass, and hope that weeds won't spread from somewhere else.
>>2927542
This is extremely time consuming and you must do it constantly before weeds grow big enough to benefit from sunlight or their will just store resources in roots again.
Unlike killing bamboo, it's much harder.

What is this wire? Is it part of the old phone lines (so I can get rid of it) or is it something important like grounding something else?

The wire is strung along the inside of the unfinished attic, and there is another wire spliced into it in the middle, coming up from lower down inside the house. Is it some sort of antenna?

House in New England, built ~1940.

there are a couple of brass torch heads I have founded like picrel.jpg, It would be nice to use them for illuminate some place (be as decoration or as emergency, plug a small butane tank and you got it), but how can be customized in order to get the usual yellow flame?
the valve turned to minimum gives the right amount of gas but the sleeve encloses most of the flame, it's enough to cut the sleeve shorter?
If the orifice for the gas exit is made larger (somehow) it would be dangerous?
afaik, these thing were done to direct and point the exhaust to the weld things, but I see no risk doing so. It is safe or not?

Pull the trigger on the drill.
Angle the drill and bit to one side by 27 degrees.
Move the drill and bit in a circular motion keeping the angle to the outside of the hole as you move it around the circumference.
Release trigger.
Remove bit from hole.
Test bolt for fit.
If it's still too tight, repeat procedure until a fit is accomplished.
