I farm and ranch for my income. And do a lot of mechanic work, fabrication, welding, machining, and anything else I can diy to save money on my farming and ranching addiction.

I am an industrial field service engineer which means I repair shit I’ve never seen and nobody in my company knows shit about so I take a wild guess what might be the problem and use mainly google and the manual of the broken thing to fix it so I guess that’s pretty diy. Put some code here some grease there and if I’m really out of ideas I just order a new controller chip whatever thing

I repair and create farming equipment mostly at home, using a lathe, milling machine and old pirated autocad program most of the time.
When im free, i go to junkyards to find things to repair.
Im very passionate about repairing and restoring old air compressors, idk why, i just like them.
Im somewhat still bad at welding and electrical stuff.

What kind of farm equipment?

I like just about anything old and buy vintage tools and equipment to restore and use.

Do you ever call out people in home depot (like me) who are buying 12-3 romex and a 240v receptacle despite obviously not being electricians.

No. I dont care what people do to their own houses. I shop in home depot all the time also. Theyre everywhere and have nearly everything.

Exactly, carpentry is just labor. Look your check and tell me I'm wrong.

That seems like a waste of time. I try and avoid confused people at home depot because I’m most often there to get some shit I forgot for a job and get back to work. I think most honest tradies hate going out for supplies and wouldn’t want to waste the timez. And the gopher helper trying to run out the clock until lunch before leaving Home Depot wouldn’t be able to help anyway.

I do a lot of work for this lady who runs a 401(c)3 animal rescue. Her car counts as a business expense, so she writes me checks out of that account for a lot of jobs. At the point I had to start writing her invoices from “Bepis Shadetree Auto Shop”, I decided to put P/T Handyman-Mechanic on my resumé.

Tractors, trucks, things they pull, make new parts if the broken cant be fixed and so on
When i say old i mean from the 70s and 80s, i dont go for vintage stuff.
I like compressors also for the fact i can sell them easily

Nice. Most of my farm equipment is from that era as well. Peak mechanical efficiency with practically zero electrical bullshit.

absolutely based

I'm a service plumber, will give an estimate for literally any work a customer asks about after consulting chatgpt and roughly estimating hours and material costs; with padding of course for me fucking up time
90% of stuff i'm experienced with but I find myself a couple times a week just looking up some random shit and winging it
did new construction previously, real fucked economy and quality there. would never buy something made since 2010

before that I was a competent aspiring chef, I consider it a trade even if most don't. big difference in efficiency and quality if you treat it as such. economy also sucks there and best to diy instead of be professional

weird census thread

It’s the indian guy walking out with 12 ft of black iron gas pipe that you should be worried about.
I know what he’s gonna be up to.

Maybe, I work for a contractor and theres a kind of dont ask dont tell sort of policy if I have to move an outlet or put a new light in. this is in other peoples houses mind you. It really is not that difficult and I do try to follow the conductors per box volume - staple shit down - use the correct gauge wire for the breaker guidelines. Alot of it aligns with common sense anyways

but I do notice the dirty looks from old heads at the store, im always ready with a rant that “im juss tryin ta earn an honest livin”

Not necessarily a trade. I'm doing stained glass restoration for a living.
