What's a good way to stay cool in AZ?
My AC's compressor keeps overheating because people aren't supposed to live in 115F weather. Any good misting devices to spray myself?

Get one of those cooling towels you wrap around your neck. You wet it with lukewarm water then as it evaporates it cools you. Works pretty well for me during lawn mowing.

At night when it is cold get things wet, the increase thermal mass will resist temp changes better.
So uv ir are two ranges of the spectrum responsible for heat and skin damage, glass reduces uv non transparent objects like blinds reduce ir.

Shade and an extra box fan, plus cleaning your outdoor compressor might help.

N side of house, my units never get dirty because no lawn or trees nearby.

I only do this when it gets over 115 outside. to help the upstairs unit.

It's a rooftop RV one. I painted the enclosure white, but that doesn't help much. Came home today and it's 95F inside even though it ran all day.

Thanks that's a good idea to check. I wouldn't be surprised when it goes from 108F ambient (probably 140F inside the AC), down to 50F every year.

Hell yeah I found a "piercing bullet valve" specifically intended for AC systems. I think this will work great since RV systems aren't meant to be recharged.

FFS OP.
You live in an uninsulated shoebox in Arizona. Your AC is probably working fine )or to whatever it's pathetic rated capacity is), but it's trying to cool all of Phoenix (or wherever. Probably still Phoenix) because it's stuck on top of a glorified shipping container.
First thing you do is rig some shade screening/mesh over that fucking thing to stop it turning into a solar oven.
Make sure it covers the whole thing, and overhangs enough to keep sun from hitting the sides of your tincan residence.

Dude your compressor shouldn’t be going off from it being hot if your condenser coil is clean. Are the capacitors/whatever start components that thing has good? Is the condenser fan motor drawing its rated amperage on the tag? Is the condenser fan motor occasionally going off on overload and tripping the compressor? Are we sure that the compressor is going off on overload and it’s not a high or low pressure switch tripping?

That piercing valve you add is probably going to cause a leak lol. If it’s an rv system it most likely has how much refrigerant it takes listed on the tag, let the refrigerant piss out (or recover and weigh it) and weigh back in how much it calls for.
Anonymous No.2928935 >>2930450
>>2928006
The compressor is cooled by gas exchange, it doesn’t care if the sun is beating on it or not. Get 2 piercing valves and get superheat and subcool

Getting deep into refrigeration science here. Hard to understand, but thanks for the research topic.

So far I've added 2 90% shade tarps to the west side, and it lowers internal temps by 5 degrees.

Did you just move to AZ? Why the fuck aren't you using an evap/swamp cooler?
Actually use the negative humidity to your benefit, for literally a fraction of the power usage, for damn near the same cooling as an AC.

Hell this is the DIY board, just make your own, they are stupid simple.

20% of your energy costs go into heating and cooling.
Sufficiently shading your structures and windows will help A LOT. No sunlight should go into the RV through your windows, and no sunlight should touch your windows.
Check your AC for a leak, soapy water in a spray bottle or a water bottle with a little hole in the lid, squirt it on all of the solder joints and look before and after any 90° bends in the pipes, sometimes the turbulence will open a micro hole in that area on the hot side.
Don't shoot any water on electronics, unplug everything. Make sure you check the capacitor while you're up there, look up your specific model.
DO NOT TOUCH THE LEADS OF THE CAPACITOR UNLESS YOU WANT TO DIE OR LOSE A FINGER.

if you are poor, use a swamp cooler until the monsoons arrive, then set your AC to 75. don't go outside, park your car in a garage.

Evap coolers are absolutely dog ass in Arizona. You don't live here, otherwise you'd know that.
Surprise surprise, the effect of evaporative cooling is significantly diminished by the presence of humidity, and in 115° weather, your swamp cooler will raise your house to 60%+ humidity in only an hour or 2.

Also, evaporative coolers are recommended for anything below 71° degrees wet-bulb temperature.
At 110° f and 10% humidity, the wet-bulb temperature is 73° F.
I can test the actual wet bulb temperature in a few hours, when the day peaks, to give you a non-theoretical wet bulb temperature, but in my experience, swamp coolers do not work here, despite the theory. Infact, the theory says we are just out of range of an evaporative cooling system.

Not OP but until recently I was thinking of moving to Kingman. Now we're thinking somewhere near Vegas. Do you think I dodged a bullet there or is Kingman better than people make it out to be?

well its a growing city and theres a bunch of farmers up there that came from central valley ca. theyre pumping a shitload of water out of the aquifer for their nut trees. like, huge massive 600hp pumps. ive read about the groundwater situation in the central valley ca and seeing shit like that up there worries me. they sunk the entire central valley basin by about 20 or 30 feet because they pumped all the water out. and theyre doing it in kingman for pecan and almonds.... like who gives a fuck about nuts? im over on the other side of the mountain from kingman in the middle of the desert, drawing water from underground streams (not an aquifer) and water is my #1 concern. water trips me out. but kingman is decent. it has everything you'd need from a city as far as im concerned. lot of tweakers tho

NTA. But you don’t know what you are talking about. Evap coolers are super effective in az. No, they don’t work as well when it is raining, but even with monsoons our day to day humidity’s very low.

I don't know how to properly articulate how brain dead everything you said in your post it. I can only assume you are one of those genetic dead ends fleeing california and filling up those cheap mass produced houses in sun city, all while unironically calling yourself a "local" on mill ave or some other shithole no one actually likes.

Growing up in Phoenix we would have our evap run usually up until July since it was cheaper and good enough. Sure as a kid I bitched and wished we turned on the AC and kept the house at 70, but I was told to shut up and suck it up.
I've had my shitty 1980s evap I got from a neighbor running for the last two years and its a godsend. This summer especially has been a breeze with it and I don't even have an AC to turn on if I wanted to.
But if you want to keep wasting money and power on AC fighting this desert wasteland then feel free anon.
You really just need to work on that problem you seem to have about being downright retarded while thinking you're smart.

Every time I see those massive sprawls of housing construction popping up everywhere I cant help but think there is going to be some water crises in the next decade. More and more people coming in the state pumping more and more out of the aquifers.
And I don't mean the government saying "we're low on water so take less showers" I mean "we are out of water, your sink will not run". Shit, all the nearby reservoirs are getting lower every day, and I hear lake pleasant is in bad shape. It probably wont get to that point (if it ever does), but goddamn do I hear stories (and see first hand) people using obscene amounts of ground water for dumb shit.

Setting up rain collection was one of the best decisions I've made and gave a lot of peace of mind. The 2500gal water tank is pretty much always filled and used as a back up, and I plan to tie in another tank and eventually hook it up to the house instead of using well water.

It's a complicated family thing but basically I need to be within driving distance of California for at least the next several years. I don't want to actually live there because guns are basically my life, so Kingman, Reno, and Vegas are my main three options as I see it.
