It's not just random girls who are impressed, generally most young friend groups are full of kids who don't know how to do maintenance on anything, so having a friend who can fix leaking toilet tanks and remind them to change their HVAC filters and give car advice or whip up some trash out of scrap wood for an event is highly valued. Currently remodeling a house I own and rent to friends and they often want to be involved in the process because they know nothing about DIY anything but want to learn what I'm doing. I've taught a stripper how HVAC works and she can diagnose basic stuff with the flame sensor and reading error codes and how the ignition cycle works now, a tranny how to do electrical junctions, and I can't count the people who I've taught how to change their tires and oil. People didn't get taught this stuff because their parents didn't know or didn't pass it on and it simply never occurred to them. We'll be running through Woodworking With Trash 101 this weekend because one of the girls wants a stage built for a party next month. I've got a torn rotator cuff so they'll be doing the actual work while I direct it, which is nice because as they learn by doing they can help with other projects in the future. Writing off everyone as incompetent while you solo all the labor only leads to physical and emotional exhaustion, teaching them when they're sufficiently motivated makes everyone's lives better.
