Should I get a McMansion for 400k or barndominium for 150k for the same square footage.

I'd choose barndominium every time because it should be easier upkeep.

Barndo.
Quicker to put up. Easier maintenance.
You can get a full turnkey 1700sq ft barndo built by the Amish for like $250k is certain parts of the country.
Vastly superior option. And even cheaper if you can diy a lot of it.

The 12 year old boy's dream of giant garage for sportscars and small living space is a real thing?
No fucking brainer. I dont even care if the tin roof is loud in the rain.

I would put a shoot that lands directly into a convertible. Add a sensor that remote starts it and opens the garage door. Get a little twink to go down it with me. Now im rural batman.

>McMansion
Cheaply built gigantic architectural frankenstein's monster that was usually made to the prior owner's "dream house" specs and they did a bunch of questionable, ugly things to fit it all in.

>Barndominium
Basically just a small house with a giant garage/workshop attached, but seems to follow a singular style and focus on functionality. The issue is that, like the McMansion, you are building an unusual structure tailored to what you want that may not be desirable to others 20-40 years down the road.

Who cares if it is desirable to anyone else? Make it how you want it and enjoy it.

I mean, sure, but when you or your grandkids can't sell it when you need to move you can't blame the market for not wanting it.

Building a new house on multi-acres you own, ups the value of both instantly.
Most barndo companies build standard house floor plans like you'd find anywhere in suburbia, they're just in rural areas because people have land to build on.

Why would you ever want to move away if it is exactly how you want it? Grandkids can make their own money and build their own houses how they want them.

The land will still be worth something, that anon is right: make it how you want it and actually live life without worrying about $1000 30 years from now that you may or may not get anyway.
Anonymous No.2930711 [Report]
Go with the barndominium but dont follow modern trends with the style. choose more neutral style. It is a fad right now, but part of that fad is practical and will last in 20 years. Try adding lots of outdoor space under a roof.. that sells and is incredibly useful.

It's still better to just build a nice house then add an outbuilding.

every house in my neighborhood has a garage apartment now
at what point are we just living in the o'block

That sounds great, but what if we put the living quarters on the same half of the house and the garage on the other?
I don't like the idea of all the living spaces opening into the central area where my dust and chemical odors are floating around. Or am I not supposed to use the garage for work?
