How would you go about killing a lawn without using factory made herbicides?

How long do you want it dead? If more or less permanently, salt

If you want it to come back, or plant something else later, cover it

Covering it sounds good, I just bought a house with an occupant who didn't care about their lawn at all.

Rotavator or rotary-hoe
Run that hoe like you rented her from a big box store and send it back hot and a dripping

I'd buy some battery acid and just pour it all over everything
or you could just use round up like a normal person, schizo

I just went in with a mini excavator and turned the garden into wasteland. But also roundup'd it before excavating so that it has no chance of ever deunaliving itself.

The easiest way is to get 10 mil black plastic and cover it for at least 6 months.

Cover it with cardboard.

Vinegar (20% horticulture), salt, and dawn, dissolve the salt fully before putting it in your sprayer.
This will kill the green and leave behind semi salted soil which should help prevent growth for a few months.
You can omit the salt for a weaker spray that you can seed next day.

If you want nothing to ever grow there throw down salt. This is nice when you plan to build or need a area clear for foundation work for a shed or something.

Thats about it beyond manually scalping the soil. If you want to do that it's slow and tedious but if you swing a flat pickaxe like a golf club you can basically just draw strips and cut up sod.

Look up ratios online of the vinegar, salt, dawn. It has to be horticultural vinegar.

Why do all that work to fuck up your top soil when black plastic will do it as easy as laying it down? Seriously. I want to understand the obsession with turning dirt around.

This. Water it then cover it with a thick black tarp or something for two to three months and repeat the process with a two week break in between to get most weed seeds to hatch and die.
You'll get a blank canvas with good healthy soil and maybe some snakes.
