I'm getting an old-ish manual diesel (the notorious 6.0 Powerstroke) this week. I used to have a manual, that is not a problem.
I have not, however, ever driven a diesel. Is there some arcane knowledge that I don't know that would cause me to fuck this up somehow?
Also why the fuck diesel rebuild kits so expensive?

farmer i knew bought a brand new 07 loaded lariat for a town rig. kept it in the garage. never towed with it or horsed it. by 2012 with only 18k on it hed had everything under the sun on the engine fail twice. he basically gave it to the dealer and got a new gas pickup then because he was so fed up
but on the other hand ever 3/4/550 workmobile that has been run like a rental is still clipping along at 300k+. my friend had a late 06 zf6 around 2010 @100k. he put an sct chip on it and set it to full race and never turned it down. it finally had the ficm and a bunch of non engine shit failed around 350k. i saw him hit 6k rpm several times and hed never shift it under 4k. that pickup cured my 6.0phobia

Ordered roller blinds but theyre too wide. Wiki says to cut them down with a hacksaw but I'm thinking a faster sharper tool might be better like one of those diamond cutting discs for an angle grinder.

You could try with that but With using Friction, the high Heat could start making the blinds inside shrink and attach to one another.
Just use a Japanese Saw and press down and forward and pickup and pull away with each cut till it's done.

Have some outlets that are only 2 prong, I read that replacing them with GFCIs was good enough as we don't want to do a bunch of expensive, invasive electrical work. Is that a good temporary fix?
Keep in mind the current solution is those housefire 2 to 3 prong adaptors so if it's suitable for even a few years it's good in my book.
Some outlets in the rooms are already grounded though, so there might be a ground already in the 2 prog outlets, how would I tell if I can ground an outlet or not?

I have learned time & again, often to my own detriment, that power tools are the best way to make mistakes faster. If you're doing something new to you, or something where a nice finished look is important, it's usually best to try it by hand first.
It's not *harder* to fuck up, per se, just *slower.*
I have a raccoon issue.
>I know, trap/shoot them etc is the only way etc
There's 5, I'm not interested in committing a raccoon genocide and traumatizing my wife, yet. I also don't want to be hauling raccoons around, I'd sooner holocaust them but I'm waiting until they do something more egregious. The main issue is that we leave cat food out for the stray cats. Those aren't the issue either, I enjoy them. But these fat fucking raccoons will steal the food, and the fattest one has the nerve to use our yard as his personal campground during the night.
>pic related
I've tried a few different methods throughout my war against them. Spraying them with an automatic sprinkler, making the food harder to access, flying a drone at them, etc. They know they can come back later and likely won't suffer consequences while I sleep. I was planning to electrify a food bowl using an electric fly swatter with the positive wire extended about 30ft so I could control it from inside, and my proof of concept works, but I think the Chinese capacitor is 2000V and once again I'd rather try less lethal avenues before potentially frying a raccoon and traumatizing my wife (if that's even a risk with the D batteries, not sure, and I'll probably get to a point where I don't care.)
>what next?
Well, I would like to modify the roof of this cat house that this obesity raccoon is enjoying himself on. I'm not sure what sort of actuator or motor would make this doable. My idea is to make it act like a springboard, where I can switch it on and have the roof violently catapult the raccoon into the air and across the yard. A good throws worth of distance like if I spun him by his tail and let him fly off into the sunset carried by his own excessive weight until he lands stunned, disoriented, and with his relaxing night ruined. Imagine a cartoonish style catapult flinging him off of the roof. Any suggestions on what to look for?

If itβs an old stump, drill some holes into it, douse it in gas along with the dirt around it, and after a while of the gas soaking just burn it. If the gas doesnβt kill them the fire will cook them. More effective than boiling water and helps break the stump down.

would one of these fiber optic usb spectrometers be sensitive enough to measure the mineral content of hydroponic solution for plants? in my head, making some reference standards of varying ppm concentrations, then measuring them as calibration to the meter, then measuing a cuvette of sample water.
it is mostly for phosphorous and potassium, maybe some trace minerals. I don't want to have to mix up reagent solutions and do titrations by hand all the time. will a spectrometer be able to do that?
somewhere in the range of 1000ppm max with a +- 10ppm window is what I am thinking.

2000V means nothing
to cause harm, you need something that'll deliver large amounts of energy, which batteries dont have
think back to when you read news about someone being harmed by a fly-swatter
anyway, if noise scares them away, you can get security cams for around $30 with alarms that sound when movement detected

I'm trying to rig up a new warm water reservoir for something, but I'm running into an unforeseen problem that I need help solving.
Alright, so I using a five gallon to hold and feed water. I chopped off the water spout on the front and ran a 3/8" NiCopp line through the hole. I then sealed it with JB weld marine. The problem I think I'm going to run into, is that the line can twist in the hole because of how smooth the line is. How do I solve this? I thought of maybe using a checkering file on the line to give the JB weld something to bite into, but I wasn't aware of this problem until I already put it together. I'll have to wait to see if it fails to hold water before I take it apart.

So, i'm doing some renovations and have made a foldable table to the kitchen counter (the board on the right in the pic).
I first painted the board with Osmo wood wax (natural oil / wax) but wasn't satisfied with the feel of it, so after it dried I painted with water-based colorless staining varnish.
As you can see, I'm new to painting and realize that oil-and water-based paints aren't that compatible, but I first painted a test piece (made of the same material) and since it seemed to work I took my chances with the board.
A week later and the board seems still good to the eyes and feel, but now I'm about to paint the fixed counter (on the left in pic) but before I do something regrettable, is there risk of something happening if I paint the counter with the Osmo and the with water varnish long term?
As in, will the varnish start flaking or something else unwanted?

Obviously best solution would be to dunk it in molten zinc but that's not an option. Great to be here again, I was tiling a couple of days ago and the was asked to install the toilet, but the drain was done to close to the wall; and when just put in place realized the tank cover won't fit because there is an overhead that would need to be inside the wall; I don't wan't to redo all (and won't be payed for that), and isn't my fault the drain was not done to the 12'', but since the clients are friends of my pa I don't want to left with no cover in the tank.
So what could be done, I was thinking using wood fitted to the tank, but I was wondering if there is a way to cut some part of the cover just like cutting tile (I have the tile cutter and a cutting tweezers I use for small details), but idk how if it's viable, how long and how many risk there is of breaking the cover.
Also
Supposing it could be done, how to pin down the cover to the tank?
Thanks!

How the fuck do I get a job in Switzerland? Fuckers require experience even for construction laborers and landscapers.
Is there a power tool that's like a sawzall but scaled down to use jigsaw blades? Seems like such a thing could be useful for certain stuff, like cutting holes in walls or cabinets along with precision metal cutting in sensitive areas, but I've never seen anything like it. The closest things I can find are body saws but they're usually air and occasionally corded, I've never seen a cordless one, and they don't use regular jigsaw blades.

Yeah I have the DeWalt equivalent, I think the big companies all have things like it now. They take full-size sawzall blades and have a relatively long stroke though. It's actually what I was using when I got the idea, needed to cut a heavy-duty stainless hose clamp on my bike and couldn't get through it with any hand tool I had, didn't want to spray sparks all over my tire and bodywork with a grinder/dremel, so I had to use the recip with the shortest metal blade I had but it was still awkward and I realized a much more compact, finer blade version of it could be really nice.

To do it correctly one would repair the shielding, but desu, who cares? Just solder the charging cable parts together (make sure to isolate those parts) and put a sleeve on top.
It should work again afterwards. Maybe coil a piece of wire around it and solder that to the shielding if you're worried about it?

The company got bought by a national/international parent company that thinks anything older than 3 months is dead stock and goes in the bin. Everything fucking sucks now and customers hate us.

If you carefully keep track of whether or not what you have is actually worth keeping, having plenty of stock on hand is a good thing. If it's stuff that isn't selling and isn't moving, you're wasting the space that you could be using for useful inventory. Or potentially even having a smaller space with cheaper rent.
That's only if you're stocking commodity goods that usually move freely, though. It's not so clear-cut if, like
>>2935019 indicates, you sell things that aren't needed regularly by a lot of consumers. It's a lot harder to determine whether it's worth keeping that turbo encabulator for another quarter, because you might only sell 2 of them a year if you're lucky.

Commercial wood chippers are like $150 on the cheapo end, you can't even buy half the transmission needed to handle the torques for $150.
>forget the electrical motor
The electrical motor on a cheap small wood chipper is like 2000W, bigger wood chippers are in the range of 10-20kW. Your hand's output is maybe 100-200W at best.
So to answer the original question,

I then tried with a sharp blade (ragged edge in picrel), which was better but not perfect.
Last, I unwound the blind and tediously cut with scissors following a line in the pattern (cleaner cut line to the left, in progress).
So, if anyone tries this, scissors worked well. Then an angle grinder to cut down the metal tube.

Our house has a circuit breaker panel with a circuit breaker that flips every few hours. No scorch marks on any outlets and if it was arcing or shorted or something it wouldn't stay on for so long between flips. It is flipping faster over time. I'm under the impression its the breaker itself that is bad and needs replacing.
Heres the stupid question: if its flipping cause its a weak ass fucking piece of shit then will taping it on cause a fire? I'm assuming it would be a fire at the circuit breaker itself right?
Heres a more serious question, the circuit breaker panel doesn't seem to have a main circuit breaker cause the house is like 20 years old. How the fuck do I turn off power to the house so I can take off the metal frame without causing an arc flash?

If you tape it, it won't matter, they still trip internally. Have you felt the breaker that trips? Is it getting hot? You haven't said anything about your skill level, and a couple of assumptions you're making point to the distinct possibility that it may be wise to call an electrician for this.

This reminds me of a question and answer in an electronics magazine I subscribed to in the seventies. Mail-in questions kinda like Dear Abby but for electronics people.
The guy said he was having trouble getting the masonite back off his console TV which he needed to work on and did they have any advice. The answer was: If you don't know how to remove the cover you need to stay out of it for your own safety.

The auger pulls itself around bends by the screw action of the auger head.
If it won't go past a certain point, it usually because of the blockage.
You should be able to tell what is blocking the drain by withdrawing the auger and examining what is caught in the turns of the spring head.

Could someone give me advice on how to tackle this motor, I bought a vintage watch cleaning machine that uses this motor to rotate a basket of watch parts in various cleaning solutions. I noticed the power cord fraying well into the motors little house and it kinda looks like it frays into the unit itself. I was thinking of first replacing the wiring but maybe I should replace the whole motor? On the unit it says 220v, 15 amperes and 1400 rpm. Modern watch cleaning machines use motors that reverse direction every so often, like 30 seconds or so. Can I make the new engine do this? Should I try and fix this old engine up? I tried asking AI but it only spat out big fucking e-bike motors. Aren't there modern motors that are smaller that I can fit inside the compartment?
I have basic raspberry pi knowledge and some pi 5s laying around, could I make a motor that runs a set cleaning schedule with direction control with this? If I am too retarded I can do with a simple motor, as long as it will fit the case, what should I google? I know nothing about motors fuck me.

As a result, I'm hard to replace, but I don't use that to my advantage. My current place of work is a bit disorganized and the work trickles in to the point that I have to pace myself, otherwise I will get two weeks worth of work done in a day. I barely talk to anyone, no one checks in on me, I'm basically alone all day to do my work.
I should rejoice, but there are many days that I just sit on 4chan and wait for the day to end so I can go home to my apartment and drink. I have the ability to remote into my home pc and do other work there, but I have absolutely no motivation to do anything.

My experience in a lead specialry trade role has been the opposite. I've improved a ton and had good ability starting. The company expanded adding only management employees and lots of large equipment purchases. I work almost entirely remotely, independently trying to maximize pace and quality. I don't kiss ass, but let the managers know I respect what they do. All the company fuck ups get tunneled into me because I'm the last part of the process. As for what's best, well, you don't use glue. You use a solvent. As long as it is the correct solvent then you don't need to worry too much about quality. Just apply it properly and join the pieces properly.

I installed laminate in a bedroom and the hallway is tile. the tile is just slightly higher than the laminate, enough that it'd probably be noticeable, so I'm gonna have to figure out some thin material to shim it with.
but anyways I wanted to do the kind of t-molding that fits into a channel/track that gets screwed down, but couldn't find a matching color. the only one that kind of matched was actual wood and didn't have a track or anything. so do I just use liquid nails to secure it?

Is it worth bracing the piers/anchoring them to the house? It's made it through at least 18 6.5+ quakes since it was built but I'm unsure if that means it's fine or if it's been getting weaker with every jolter. Wouldn't mind making it harder for skunks to get under the house anyways if adding a rim foundation/cripple wall was a solution.

To start with, get a cheap non-electronic telescope. Hell, a nice pair of stargazing binoculars works just fine. Get used to finding your way around the night sky, learn the constellations/asterisms and how they relate to each other. 90% of finding specific stars is "find this constellation or big star, then follow a line from there to another big star and go a little further" and it's a tremendously useful skill to develop.
I have a cheap, babbys first star hunters telescope. Cost like $70 bucks. Has a cheap little laser scope for getting it lined up with things you can see naked eye, and no other electronic parts. It's worked wonderfully for me. I can see saturns rings, I can see lots of details on the moon, I can see Andromeda as a galaxy. You can buy the little eyepiece lenses to use with a cheap telescope and keep using them with a pricier telescope, most use the same diameter.
Nothing you get in your backyard is going to come close to hubble. It's still great fun but just exterminate any inkling of that dream now so it doesn't sully what you find on your own. Like any hobby, better to start small then invest more as you master the basics.
If you do want to splurge for one of the electric automated telescopes, the things are idiot proof, that's the whole point. Just be careful with handling it, keep all the parts clean and packed nicely between uses, and keep the instructions. If you want a middle ground between cheap and complicated, get a plain telescope with an equatorial mount. Most cheap telescopes have a simple up/down, side to side mount, which is fine for casual viewing but has issues if you're trying to follow something when using a high zoom lens since the earth is constantly moving. Equatorial mounts let you easily track an object once you've gotten the thing set up right, you only have to move it side to side and it automatically follows the right curve to track an object.
Maybe kind of dumb, but how did you all find this board? Were you a /b/tard that grew up and migrated here like me? What other boards do you browse?

Basically because the patio was 15x15, and they did like a 16x16 perimeter of aggregate. My yard wasn't in great shape at the time, so didn't really bother me, but now that I'm starting to care, it's really in the way. And maybe I'm not using the correct term(aggregate, but all the rocks and sand and shit to put down so it could be leveled. On top of that, my backyard is very sloped, so drainage is probably the biggest thing affecting it.

Once upon a time there were some pretty good subreddits but almost everything there has become thin theme skins stretched over politics. I know people complain that /pol/ is everywhere on 4chan but that's overblown and most of the time easy enough to ignore. Voting on posts make the political shit rise to the top, while earnest discussion gets buried.
I've never bothered with looking around Discord. Not even all that sure what it is beyond the most basic understanding. The time I spend here already is probably more than it should be.

Like put a roll of paper behind the plotter, adjust the blade pressure to cut paper, and your code will literally be one sime loop of G0X100F500 G1Y500F2000 G1Y0F2000 or so. You get the idea.

You get another bench grinder. Nount both on a board, one infront of the other. Remove one wheel and replace with a pulley. Also put a pulley on the other one. Run a belt loop. Only power one of the two. Now you have 2 wheels, one at roughly normal speed and the other at whatever the ratio you chose results in.
Now the real question is: Why try running a bench grinder slower. It's almost as if there already exists a specific solution to whatever you're trying to do or you dkn't understand how bench grinders work.

i bought a 70s house and the inspector said that the amount of insulation in the unfinished attic space was considered appropriate when the house was built, but now they recommend double the thickness for the climate (upper midwest)
it just looks like a mess of blown in mix o fiberglass and cellulose fluff between the ceiling joists, so one could still walk around up there if needed.
is there a best option here? or even a retarded option that shouldnt be considered at all?
>blow in more fiberglass fluff, but end up covering up all the ceiling joists
>probably cheapest, but then if i need to get up there for something in the future it's gonna be a bitch
>have all the old insulation removed. replace with something with a high enough r value that will fit in the same space without covering the ceiling joists
>probably the most expensive and time consuming option
>leave the insulation between the joists alone and add more insulation between the rafters instead
>ive never seen any house in this area with insulated rafters, so im wondering if theres a reason people tend not to do this?

Is the house cold? Is the weather damaging the rafters in any way?
If not, leave well enough alone. An inspector usually tells you very clearly if there's something horribly wrong with the house (unless you let your realtor pick one, never do this, they get paid on commission and have a vested interest in you buying the house at max price to get their cut and pick the sleaziest inspector who will tell you things are fine). When an inspector says "this is fine, but it SHOULD be X" he's giving you a negotiating point to use on the seller: "I'm going to have to spend X dollars getting this insulation up to code, I'd like to knock X off the price to cover that". If it's not causing problems just leave it be.

To decide on doing anything you check your heating costs in winter (eg gas bill from previous owner) and see if it makes sense to do so. PIR sheet has about twice the R value of cellulose and you can get it pre-made with OSB/ply. If you remove the old stuff you can get twice the insulation without losing space. If you put sheets over cellulose you create confined pockets of cellulose that wasps and martens love to nest in

How to make up, hide it without redo the tiles already layed, since I was checking with a bubble level and the tiles have a bit of slope but not for two inches down, so checked the walls and they are fucked, the joint of the walls are the main source of misalign, not the slope of the tiles.

I need a little help replacing a kitchen faucet that seems to be snowballing into about 3 other projects.
I think the glue on my under-mountsink failed so I wedged a 2x4 to keep it up. The faucet flow is so low its doing like 0.5gallons per minute. The rubber extension hose doesn't appear kinked, so I assume the ceramic blend valve is full up with hard water minerals and whatever shit my city puts in the water. Every other hose bib and faucet in the house (including the dishwasher and icemaker) blasts water just fine making me think its the sink faucet assembly somehow.
Since the house is 17+ years old, all of the plastic-stemmed angle stops have broken whenever I had to touch them. I called a plumber last time because water damage is no fucking joke. Since this is /diy/, can a first time homeowner swap out an angle stop to a copper pipe under the sink and replace the faucet? Is it super simple or should I just call a plumber again?

Has anyone tried brazing a cnc machine frame instead of welding? Especially soft brazing with tin or lead based solder. Generally those frames are overbuilt as fuck for rigidity so strength is not an issue and the (softer) solder joints are too thin to really affect the rigidity.
The idea is that brazing should avoid most distortion issues and make fixes easier if something goes wrong (inb4 just lrn2weld). I'm specifically looking at low temperature soft brazing because heating up 100 kg of thick steel to red glow without a massive industrial kiln or oxy fuel torch is definitely going to be a challenge. On the other hand 200Β°C or so should be fairly simple even with a cheap propane torch.

Also your reasoning regarding distortion sounds like cope.
When designing machine tools you do not rely on the supposed precision of a welded structure. You machine functional surfaces and uktimately hand fit everything to make sure it's actually geometrically right.

>You machine functional surfaces and uktimately hand fit everything to make sure it's actually geometrically right
If I were a certified welder and had a big machine shop I wouldn't even bother. Just weld it carefully, anneal in the kiln, then mill everything flat and square. Alas, I only have a tiny manual mill and a big surface plate and only enough welding experience to know how easily everything turns into a pretzel if you're not doing it perfectly right on the first try. So the plan is to somehow assemble the structure as precisely as possible then fine level everything that matters using metal filled epoxy grout and surface plate as the template. Epoxy layer can't be too thick or uneven because it will cause its own issues later, and I'm down to basically angle grinder after I put the thing together so everything has to reasonably stay in place during the process.

definitely worth replacing, if all your lines are copper they're likely compression stops and this would be a relatively easy one day job to do all at once
you can unscrew the old ones from the old ferrel+nut and reuse on the new stops
each one should just take a couple minutes
i just did this for someone at 60$/ea x19, 3 hour job
i highly recommend because nonfunctioning stops is just a pain and it's super cheap to DIY
if they are sweat on stops (super uncommon), you can torch them off and replace with a compression stop after sanding well
as for the kitchen faucet, you can likely remove the handle with an allen key to get to the cartridge and blow it out or replace
modern faucets have flow restrictors build into where the the pull hose screws together, which can gunk up and they can be popped out
it might also have an aerator with a filter(flow restrictor) that can be cleaned
all depends on the faucet
as for the sink, i'd chill with the 2x4 but you can youtube the process. essentially you drop it, grind off old epoxy, apply new, slide in 2x4, install mount arms for extra support
went to a customers house and they had a sink supported by a soccer ball once

100 foot wide is not very much, just sell the property. The amount of money you'll dump into architects, general contractor bullshit, permits, taxes, fees, you'll never recover it after several years of work. You're better off just selling, or sitting on the property for the 2 years it'd take to build the houses and sell the property for slightly more money.

My gutter on one side of the house gets routed into a pipe that goes under my deck and empties into my back yard. However, the pipe is only 5 feet long, after which it is attached to a 4 inch diameter flexible hose. The soil under the deck is uneven, and is higher at the edge of the deck than in the middle, so all the water just sits in the hose. Is there any reason not to just replace the whole thing with PVC pipes, mounted on the supports for the deck, to keep it at a steady downward angle through to the back of the deck? The entrance is almost 2 feet higher than the exit. I tried building little support things for the hose out of scrap wood but it's too flexible and sags if they're more than 2 feet apart, so I just set two in to keep the water flowing past the connection between the pipe and the hose so the water doesn't leak out of the joint and flow under the house.
I'm replacing the deck (just the planks, stringers are fine) so I figured this is the easiest time to do something.

I wouldn't think so; they build dedicated drains from larger mansions where the gutters connect into subterranean 4" PVC pipes. I'm not sure if those pipes connect to a drain or are simply integrated into a French drain.
So a PVC extension running under the deck should be fine. Be sure to over-build it adding probably too many hangars and hide it really well so it drains exactly where you want it to.

To keep skunks out, a fence needs to be dug at least 12-18 inches deep, as skunks are persistent diggers but typically donβt dig deeper than this. For added security, extend the fence 2 feet below ground and consider a 6-inch L-shaped footer (buried outward) to deter tunneling. Concrete encasement at the bottom isnβt strictly necessary but can be effective, especially in high-traffic skunk areas or loose soil. A cheaper alternative is burying galvanized hardware cloth or wire mesh (1/2-inch or smaller) to reinforce the base. Ensure the fence is at least 3 feet high above ground, as skunks can climb low obstacles. Secure any gaps and use a tight-fitting gate to prevent entry.

Wife wants me to put "flat hooks" into the kitchen wall for her potholders and oven mitts. She specifically said
>something like those strips hanging on poles in the supermarket with things clipped on them
"A clip strip?"
>oh, is that what they're called? lol
She found
https://www.amazon.com/CALLARON-Paper-Wallet-Magnetic-Holder/dp/B0DH32SBJD
She thinks those are perfect but I'm not sure how the hell to attach them to the wall other than using thin strips of metal to screw them in place, like a set of very, very tiny cable raceways or screw mounted cable clamps like

>do i need additional support anywhere? i want to leave the area underneath free for a desk, so i was thinking about drilling 2x6's into the ceiling joists and connecting them to the corners of the shelf frame using steel cable. if so, can the shelf span the ~4' length between the cables or will i need multiple cable supports along the long side of the shelf?

I believe the individual LEDs are sufficiently waterproof in their own right and the voltage drop across each one hardle enough to cause serious electrolysis. So worsg you get some slow corrosion? I mean is this a normie tier electronics + water bad is the rule?
Anyways its probably a good idea to waterproof em anyways and you'r method seems sound. Perhaps put silica gel in there too so nothing sweats inside.
Cany ou just heatshrink? Like put a glob of hot snot on each end, in translucent heat shrink, shrink it, the hot snot will soften to form a good seal.

Beat is to try and see yourself what you like. I always hated it when I needed to 'visualise' the brightness of LEDs from the datasheet for work. Datasheet only ever gets you in the ballpark. You'll have to see it for yourself. So just turn it up to where you like in an experiment.

Rip. I don't have a power supply for these yet. I scavenged these two lights and their controller from a shitty computer case. I don't know anything besides that said controller takes 5v and has some pre-programmed modes you can switch through with a button. Which begs another question, should i try controlling this thing with a dev board for dimming and stuff or should i throw this away and use something dedicated?
And a third question, how do i 3d print safely?
Everybody knows that nozzles wear down over time and get into the product in small amounts. Since im printing with a very easy to biodegrade filament these metals would get released into its surroundings. Its a fairly soft material and not very abrasive, to my knowledge, would a steel nozzle be enough to basically guarantee a completely safe product?

You dable with electronics. You buy the 1/4W axial THT resistor kit. Okay? Or a potentiometer.
You will need a multimeter if you want to be sure.
Get any power supply. Can be USB, can be 12V laptop charger or whatever. Just nothing ridicolous.
Measure the output.
See if you can measure the LED strips forward voltage with ur multimeter.
If not measure one LED and multiply.
Do the math so you have an idea what sort or series resistance you want.
Start low. Then slowly turn it up by either removing series resistors, paralleling resistors or adjusting the pot.
Don't fly too close to the sun, remember she draws more the hotter she gets. It'sa runaway situation and the resistors knly help so much.
Either measure voltage drop across your resistors and calculate your current or put the multimeter in series and read it.
Perhaps keep the controller. It probably brings alot to the table. Learn how it works.
>3D printing biodegradable
are you sure your filament is biodegradable or is that just the MFG claim?
Also why not throw a failed print in the plastic trash, do you plan on composting 3D prints? Chances are you'll find out about biodegradability.

Its not PLA but PHA which also has barely any additives that those that are in there are also biodegradable. It being cancer to print like pure PLA makes me thing that this claim is true.
>Also why not throw a failed print in the plastic trash
I collect it for recycling. Remelt and re-use.
>do you plan on composting 3D prints
No. Most filaments are not degradable like that. PLA is already hardish to degrade but if you also put pigments and other additives in there its very hard.
>Honestly there's worse things than brass outside.
Its for a aquarium. The animals are sensitive to metals and im making a filter out of the filament. One goal is to have a safe product and the second one is to see how fast it breaks down under almost ideal conditions. I see plenty of people print huge PLA parts with no extra precautions but as i said this thing will dissolve over time.
I'll try the electronics stuff you suggested but these are aRGB strips. It might be a little bit more involved in that.
Any reason not to go with ruby nozzels nowadays? They are pretty cheap and should never abrade because of material like this. Don't mind the reduced thermal conductivity.

I want to shorten the PCB. This would leave 3 LEDs on one part and 5 on the other but that is irrelevant. What im worrying about is the cut not being perfect and things sorta being mixed around. Sorta like in this cut in picrel. Most material is removed but some stays but is sorta frayed. If that were the case that would connect both layers, the top electricity carrying one and the bottom cooling one which would short the + and - traces of the top one, right? So to avoid this I'd cut the traces leading to the part where i sawed it in half, avoiding the potential short. I have never cut a PCB before so i don't know how clean something like this would be and if im worrying for no reason. Does this make my though process clear or do i have to elaborate a bit more?

Worry less. Cut it and you'll be good. You can also scar PCB heavily on both sides and break it. The saw dust is ugh. You can clean up edges by putting sandpaper down on the table and sanding the edge. There wont be any shorts but doing so will definately remove and shorts. You can always measure to check for shorts. No multimeter?
Then hook it uo but put any sort of resistive element in between to test for shorts.
But like I said: Worry less. There's no short.
Your LEDs are very likely connected in series. So you'll need to find a way to connect the now open end. You'll also need to change the power supply.

>No multimeter?
I have one. Im scratching the paint off and trying to make sense of the traces right now. They chose to cover the entire side in copper and only have thin non-conductive lines to separate the polarities. The LEDs being covered by some type of diffusion lens makes it hard to see how they are connected. But from what i am able to see its two groups of LEDs in parallel with each LED within a group being in series. I don't really know, them maximizing the amount of copper for cooling and the lenses are making things hard.
>You'll also need to change the power supply.
about that. It says '94-V0' on the strip and i don't know if that's a voltage or some name. The connectors have really thin wires so i think its high-ish voltage or else they would melt as the higher the voltage the less resistance there is. But when i look this strip up online it says its 3. So i connected it to a 3v power supply but they did not light up a bit and the power supply was curiously not used. I don't have a stronger one i can connect without sketchily twisting wires together.
I don't think i damaged them while i got them from the tv. The traces are all intact at least.

yeah it's a common way to think about making power boards. Minimizing resistance by maximizing copper for any trace when nothing else is relevant. So you just choose what needs to go instead of what needs to remain.

the LEDs have whatever forward voltage they have in their series configuration and the board is powered at that voltage.
The resistance of a copper trace is generally assumed not to be voltage dependent. What you're peobably thinking is:
Power is the product of voltage and current so for the samw power higher voltage means less current and cjrrent make thing flamey.

>just measure diode forward across two places to try and make sense of it.
Due to a lack of hands i can either check if continuity with my multi meter or fuck around with a power supply. Probing with a weak supply makes me think the two groups hypothesis is correct. I can power LEDs 1-4 by giving power between them but not between 4 and 5, 5-8 i can however. The lenses are glued to the PCB with a weak adhesive and i just pried them off on my sacrificial test strip.
>Power is the product of voltage and current so for the samw power higher voltage means less current and cjrrent make thing flamey.
Don't power lines use high voltage because the loss is lower, and with said loss heating up the conductor? Are copper traces somehow exempt by this or do i need to brush up on some things? And i don't mean the traces on the PCB being thin but the connector. I don't actually know yet how much this thing uses but it looks too small for how bright these things are.
>Minimizing resistance by maximizing copper for any trace when nothing else is relevant.
Does that also work when you have copper in places where nothing is connected? There are copper forks that lead nowhere.
Now i gotta order the vinyl tubing, get some barrel connectors, figure out how i wanna dim them (probably cia PWM) and figure out how to cut good contacts into places where there are none.

if your multimeter measures diode forward voltage it will display it while you 'meaure continuity', no extra hands or external power needed.
Ofc you could just put an external source on your leads and measure voltage in thag mode but remember to have anything in line to keep the current down.
>2 groups
did you cut it yet? Maybe 2 groups result from curting the board.
>Don't power lines use high voltage
>for the same power.
Itold you. For the same power amperage will need an increase. And power dissipation will then be proportional to the square of amps.
But youre looking at an LED strip. Its inconsequential and impossible. The LEDs are going to have given forward voltage. All you can do to make the strip higher supply voltage is all LEDs in series. Yes lower amps for the same power and lower power dissipation in the copper traces will result but they're fuckall to begin with.
>The connector flimsy
Flimsy connectors can take suprising amperage. Tables for amps and diameter you might find imply a certain temperature over ambient. Usually a relatively mild temperature increase.
>Does that work when copper isnt connected?
No not really but there's reasons why the designer would take or leave that. You paid for it already and you oay nothing extra for removal. In a power board it might just aid thermal mass and improve heat flux through the board. In EMI sensitive or emitting things you might use that, connected to a power plane, to catch and absorb alot of the EMI coming in or going out.
>How to contact?
Scrape or sand off solder resist until bare, shiny copper is exposed. Solder to that.
>PWM
Yeah, PWM, PDM, something like that as lomg as its always fast enough to fool. the eyes. Dont try a linear regulator or anything.
