diskstation nas storage issues
we have an 8tb nas storage for our stores surveilance systems. its full. i deleted all the videos old enough to delete, must have been 50gb worth of surveilance footage. Now heres the problem, even though i just deleted 50gb worth of material i somehow only have 700mb of free space now. wtf? there is no garbage bin or anything, the nas even tells me everytime i delete something, that it will be all gone non retrievable.
I dont know shit about it hardware, can somebody explain this?

Spinning discs lose capacity over time due to "lossy" compression and rotational velocidensity.

Reformat the drive
They can still find your kiddy porn

Theres a decent program for this, install Gentoo

bc of the nature of our store, we are legally obliged to keep surveilance records for a certain amount of time. i cant just delete everything.

This, if there is no data then just reformat. Hard drives are extremely finicky

Actually its true, and its really important that you take care of your files.
Hearing the difference now isn’t the reason to encode to FLAC. FLAC uses lossless compression, while MP3 is ‘lossy’. What this means is that for each year the MP3 sits on your hard drive, it will lose roughly 12kbps, assuming you have SATA – it’s about 15kbps on IDE, but only 7kbps on SCSI, due to rotational velocidensity. You don’t want to know how much worse it is on CD-ROM or other optical media.

I started collecting MP3s in about 2001, and if I try to play any of the tracks I downloaded back then, even the stuff I grabbed at 320kbps, they just sound like crap. The bass is terrible, the midrange…well don’t get me started. Some of those albums have degraded down to 32 or even 16kbps. FLAC rips from the same period still sound great, even if they weren’t stored correctly, in a cool, dry place. Seriously, stick to FLAC, you may not be able to hear the difference now, but in a year or two, you’ll be glad you did.

put data onto other device, reformat, place back onto original device

ok, lets say this is true and you arent just bulshitting me with vocabulary you stole from the cern wikipedia site. i still dont understand why deleting 1tb of stuff doesnt free up (even remotely) 1tb.

not a bad idea but i dont really have 8TB cap stuff lying around here.

Defrag drive.

thanks friend. will do, hope it frees up a lot of space.

No problem, whats even better is if you use a modern, journaling file system like ReiserFS, or Red Sea FS

EMPTY THE RECYCLE BIN!

>>2933669
Shut up you faggot moron.

>>2933683
that doesn't free up disk space dipshit.

oh and in case you did not understand EMPTY THE RECYCLE BIN on the NAS not your computer.

Did you try to login to the NAS to see if it's syncing to a cloud backup? Is it a RAID setup?

You don't sound like a computer guy. Hire a computer guy to help you with this. Problem solved.

>that doesn't free up disk space
No. But it helps some OSs find and properly report the free space available.

i remember its a raid bc the harddrives inside are actually more then 8tb. i asked the guy who set it up back then, why we only get 8tb of space when we have 10tb of discs in there and he said thats bc of the raid.
defraging freed up space but not as much as i hoped.
Interestingly, asshole guy was right. there IS a recycling bin on the nas, i just couldnt see it. the absurd thing is, everytime i deleted something, the nas warned me, that the data is gone for good bc no recycling bin was set up. yet, a recycling bin was there all along. so thanks to you to asshole guy who came into the thread hauling insults at everybody. you might be an asshole, but your assumption that there actualy is a recycling bin on the nas was right. we can all learn from this, just because somebody is an asshole doesnt necessarily mean hes wrong.
my problem is solved, thanks to everybody who took some time out his day trying to help a stranger, ill include you guys into my prayers tonight.
