Home security general
I know there's a thread for screens, but are there any ideas for actual diy security bars that's effective and cheaper than commercial options? Points for no welding involved.

Also a good thread for securing doors, windows, vehicles, garages, etc.

Hardware cloth. Make sure you get 16 gauge or thicker. It will be an absolute bitch to cut and work with, as it has a tendency to re-roll itself. Get proper metal shears for it. Cut larger than your window frame so there's sufficient overlap and trim whatever you dont want after install. 14 gauge galvanized wire cloth has kept black bears out of my chicken coop for over 15 years. You can find up 10 gauge at most hardware or fencing stores, but you need multiple people to mend it and you'll need to frame it properly for install.

Look up local fire code and make sure every room without an exterior leading door has at least one window with a quick-detatch option so you can escape. You're more likely to die in a burning death trap than a burglar coming in.

They have economies of scale. You don't. Unless you get your materials well below market cost for some reason (recycled, scrap, stolen, etc.) and/or value your own labor at below market rates you aren't going to come out ahead on cost.

DIY is rarely cost effective. We do it because we like it or we can do custom things that simply can't be had otherwise, not because we save a tone of money.

Maybe stop being a schizo. If you live in such a high crime area that you need this shit to prevent people from stealing everything you own the moment you go to work, it won't do shit. Security measures don't stop people from breaking in, they make it slower. This works on commercial properties because you have a security guard watching all of the cameras who can respond before they actually get through the security measures. Like bro a nigga's just gonna take a drill to your doorknob and kick in your door. If you use door bars he's just gonna kick it harder. If they're reinforced with steel he's just gonna drive his car through the door. Just move somewhere else.

Best door guards/chains/latches? Should I just put a couple of these on my door? I just don't want someone rushing in as soon as I crack it open.

If Jamal sees all this shit he's gotta do to get in, he's going to know 2 things.
1: this person is probably a dirt poor drug addict that has no nice things and grew up in the ghetto
2: it's going to be easier to rob someone else without all these hoops to jump through

Niggers are innately lazy, that's why they're robbing you in the first place. If they need to spend an extra 30 minutes trying to break into your shit, they'll say fuck it and move on to something they can break into easier and faster.

Because you don't live near bears. I had 3 layers of 6 gauge fencing, one of which was electrified, surrounding 10 gauge fencing for my goats and a black bear tore through all of it like fucking butter.
