What's the proper way to layer a rock garden, sort of like picrel? The area behind my kitchen window with my AC units is basically bare soil except for a couple tall shrubs. There are many conflicting answers as to how many layers, what kinds of stone to us in each one, etc, etc. I don't want to use any kind of weed barrier cloth (spent the last couple months' weekends removing old barrier shit the boomer former owners left behind, what a nightmare).

Use black stones so you can pour motor oil over it from time to time without it being noticed. Weed barriers don't work as enough soil will get into the rocks for weeds to grow on top of the barrier.

just dump a bunch of salt on the ground where the rocks will go. Kills everything for a long time. If shit starts to grow you just dump more salt.

people favoring weed fabric are the same people who pay landscapers to put fabric down. it deteriorates and comes up in small disintegrated pieces and prevents you from using more effective methods like a weed torch, because you will melt the fabric into the soil.

I also bought a house from aging boomers who had this shit all through their rock beds. it's awful stuff that, in the end, cannot prevent weeds

Really if you don’t want an ugly mess of weeds you’ll either need to spray or burn 4x per year or make the soil uninhabitable forever with salt or vinegar. The people that say apply vinegar or burn once a year and be done with it are lying and you still have to pull everything out by hand. Round up is normally once a year but it washes off faster from rocks and you don’t want that stuff near your garden anyway. Nothing that you put below the rocks helps because the weed roots grow on the rocks themselves and feed from whatever falls between them.

Source: I have rocks like your pic with and without weed barrier too from the previous owners and I’m just going to replace it with grass to be done with it. Never seen anyone have a neat rock bed without weeds except some pensioned neighbour that sprays pure cleaning vinegar every sunday

Depends on a few things. Is your neighbor's garden or yours already infested with weeds? If so, it is going to be hard and how you will take care of it depends on what kinds of weed are growing around the are you want to put grass on.

If there are no weeds around, get CLEAN soil, if you do not know anybody that can help you with that, buy it in bag. Top soil is boomer shit, don't buy that. Buy black soil/earth. How much sun in that area? Grass need a lot of light. If not there are a few kinds that can work but is usally is not good looking. Is there any flooding/excessive moisture where you want to put your grass? That can also change what you will do. So anyways what you want to do is turn over the soil/plow it to aerate, add generous amount of good black earth. Then you are better off seeding the are with grass seeds, but if you in a hurry, you can sod the area but it is more expensive and can be tricky. You can send pics or plans of your garden for more help, and what is the weather like where you live.
