/diy/ PSA check your toilet tank bolts.

bought my house a few years ago. 1993 house has 3 bathrooms (ask the previous owners). I noticed (when we got the house) that inside the toilet tanks the bolts were rusty. I've been meaning to look in to it, and recently one of the flapper valves broke, so I decided it was time to rebuild all 3 of them.

The first one when I went to remove the bolts, one snapped off when I barely turned it, the others head had about the same amount of material left as a dime.

2nd toilet had been replaced in 2015, and the bolts weren't too bad so I just replaced the bolts.

3rd one (pic related) the bolts were being held on by thoughts and prayers. left is how they came off, and right is what was under the rust.

replace your bolts with stainless steel ones anon before you have a flood.

>a flood
water tank is not pressurized
you will clearly notice the drip when it starts, way before the bolt is completely gone and water starts pouring

>you will clearly notice the drip when it starts,
will you? 2 bolts were leaking for years before I got the house.

it could have failed at any time you know like when you are on a vacation.

but you do you, just ignore it.

idiot.

You don't turn your water off when you leave for vacation? Then you deserve a flood, retard. But hey, I'm just saying here. You do you.

No one is going to change their toilet tank bolts moron. Fuck off. And when you start turning off your water when you go on vacation, didn't forget to turn off your water heater that you recently changed the anode in or you'll burn it out while you're gone. Now you know.

bro you should definitely ask for your money back on that house, or at least a percentage off.

this only happens if you use those bleach cleaning tabs in your tank

Only safe thing to do is burn your house down before leaving for vacation. To save money on hotel stays, light it when you are leaving. No risk of toilet or hot water heater floods.

Might want to take a look at the bolts securing the whole thing to the floor, as well. My house is 51 years. I noticed one side of the toilet seemed loose. Removed the plastic caps and yep, the bolts are rotted to hell.

I just pulled up my toilet and the whole flange is rusted and deteriorating. You cursed me OP.

the reason those bolts are breaking is because you are sposed to undo the nuts on the bottom of them then pull the tank up and off.

i work at a hotel built in 1977. I fix a lot of toilet issues. youd be surprised how old and barely attached a tank can be and not leak.

you are being self righteous about something that really just shows your greenness in the world. everyones fking toilet tank bolts are fine.

if theres something on your toilet you should check, its can I undo the nuts on the flange bolts, and/or does my shutoff valve move and can it be shut off without leaking?
many older ones cant.

Bro the rust LITERALLY forms at protective seal. We call it iron enamel, haha. Its fine forever as long as you dont fuck with(like you did) or a fatty doesn't rock the bowl.
