Honestly:
Practice.
Take your stock to a bandsaw and produce those coupons. Not 5 or 10. Run your stock through.
And after you made all those cuts:
Put it back together.
Start with the simplest weld. Were not doing overhead or behind a pipe for starters. Start with 1G. After each weld stop and inspect your weld. Ask yourself what you're happy with and what not. Think about what to change to improve it and put that to practice with the next one.
Practice makes perfect. It's that simple. And no, welding is not immitating someone else. 2 guys will have 2 different styles and both will lay down a weld. that will look the part and pass inspection. Asking one to do it exactly like the other did will only produce a worse weld.
So get cutting.

Step 1: buy good equipment second hand if possible
Step 2: don't be cheap on protection
Step 3: don't fuck around or underestimate protection
Step 4: don't fuck around with protection
Step 5: you will cry yourself to sleep if you don't use your protection
Step 6: protection protection protection
Step 7: just weld shit together, post it here and tell people you're a pro, you'll get the best advice and critics you'll ever dream of

procure the following
>metal
>leather gloves
>#10 tinted viewing glass
>flux coated electrodes
>constant current power supply
place one electrode and the metal in series in the power supply output circuit
touch the electrode and withdraw to a gap of approximately 1/8"
maintain that relationship while the electrode is consumed
repeat until results are satisfactory for your requirements
