Why isn't it common practice to install one way glass instead of normal glass with residential homes?

Large windows are stupid in general. A home should not be welcoming to outsiders and even with one-way windows the groids just see something to smash.

A well designed home is defensible with good cover and preferably no external indication of same.

Or you could just live in a white area, where you're allowed to have nice things

I dunno but it only works when one side is much darker than the other

then people will use your windows as mirrors. maybe they won't be able to see inside, but they'll still stare at your house and make you uncomfortable.

I thought about putting one up to spy on people in the bathroom, but one-way-mirrors don't really work like in the movies. You need one side to be really dark and the other to be really bright, otherwise it becomes see-through. I mean people have done it to spy on the college girls they rent rooms to, but the risk of detection is just too high.

one way glass is not one way at night.

Expensive and the tint gets scratched.
Even more expensive to have the 2-way layer in the middle (tintless style)

Large windows are essential for self sustaining homes that can self regulate their own temperature and air quality, it has nothing to do with curb appeal.

my parents had their house built with tinted glass on all western facing windows because they are up on a hill and sunsets can be blinding all year long. it also helps keep the heat down in the summer, however they definitely get more stray bird strikes due to the mirrored finish and i've found that the surface of the glass is harder to clean from the outside.

Thats a battlement not a home, which is meant for family and to be welcoming. What you're looking for is fencing and good deterrence before we even talk of invasion
