ITT: Share your home media setups. Because fuck all these subscription services.

I'm using picrel on an old CRT I have in my house to capture that 90's era programming. I've got a Pi5 with a 2TB NVME connected to it, running 4 channels at the moment. The whole setup was about $250, if memory serves. The case in picrel fits the Pi perfectly, and then I run an HDMI to Coax adapter out to my CRT. My kids love it, we call it the "time machine" in our house. Source for the project is all here:

I'm trying to set up a movie channel, and I want to add more 4:3 movies to the lineup. I've spent the last 3 days drudging through the Internet Archive for halfway decent VHS rips of movies and found a few. Does anyone have any recommendations for good sources of 4:3 movies?

What does your media center look like? What software are you using? What hardware?

In my basement I have an HP 380 Gen9 server running proxmox. I built a VM that I pass a 980ti to, this is hooked to a TV in my living room via a 50ft HDMI cable passed through the wall. There is also a long USB, for bluetooth mostly, this lets me use a wireless controller on my TVVM. I have a snapshot from the moment I got the VM setup as I wanted, so if anything goes wrong I can just restore the backup and move on like nothing happened.

I run a pihole LXC as well to blackhole ads. My phone is connected to my pfsense VPN so anywhere I go I am protected by the pihole as well.

I have a WD TV Mini Media Player plugged into my 27" Sony Trinitron ProFeel CRT TV. I've already watched a few movies on it so far this year, the most recent one being 28 Days Later. It is perfect for anything like that shot in standard-definition, or AVI files. For my 77" LG OLED TV all I do is simply plug in a USB stick with my latest downloaded torrents from my PC, and everything works perfectly.

I have a private tracker that I use that's got a ton of great material. Most public trackers are too suspect for me, barring the more obscure media. I'll check out fmhy, that site sounds interesting.

I just built a cheap server with a PCIe SAS HBA in IT mode from ebay and filled it with cheap HDDs shucked from externals that were on sale
mergerfs is pretty nice it lets you get up and running with very little planning

I don't know the oldest file I have one that says the date modified is from 1881 but thats obviously wrong. I do have screenshots from 2010

We own most of our media (been collecting for years). It's all digital. We stream VERY little and it's usually only stuff we don't care to own. I run a Linux server on an old machine (AMD Athlon X4, 32GB ECC ram, 14TB storage and a tiny SSD for the OS). We use SFTP for all connections and in every room, we have a TV in almost every room that is connected to either an old tiny desktop or an Amazon FireStick. In my router, I block all internet traffic to the Amazon sticks (no ads, no nothing) and use Kodi to watch all the movies/shows etc. The living room has the most powerful machine (a mobile i5 with 4GB ram and an SSD running a HIGHLY customized Linux, optimized for streaming, gaming, video chat etc...) and we use a KB400 keyboard touchpad combo to control everything on that machine. I make custom shortcuts and add them to Plank (a self hiding MacOS-like dock) so we can launch whatever we want (Kodi, Food Network, Minecraft, whatever) and it all goes through a simple 2.1 stereo. We don't like being too immersed with 8K Amoled and 9.2 surround. We like TV the way it was when we were young. We also use the Linux server to record our security cameras (VM running AgentDVR) and to host a NextCloud instance that we use for our businesses. Karaoke is HELLAfun because we use YouTube for all the karaoke vids, and we pull out our portable PA and two mics so people can sing and we have some strobes and LEDs. It's pretty cozy at our place and it costs me almost nothing because I use old free hardware.

How is your storage connected? Is it on a NAS? Or are the drives connected directly to the server? If it's the latter are they set to automatically mount on startup? Does that make adding new content difficult? I ran into issues with my two internal drives on my general use desktop with automatic mounting. Wondering if you know something I don't...

What distro do you use in the living room? Looking to do something similar in my house.

The logic is a little funky on that at the moment. I believe the current roadmap plan is to use chapters in the near future. Right now, it's a little random when it inserts the commercials. There was a whole thing a few months ago where they tried black screen detect, but it caused more problems than it solved. So the creator scrapped it for the new plan.

The drives are directly connected and I use ZFS to manage them so the server IS essentially a NAS (with much more power and flexibility). I use different flavors of Linux but Mint is usually my go-to. Automounting drives is easy as pie. I can help you correct your mistakes.

I run mint on my desktop. I used the disks app in the launcher. I turned on auto mount in there. When I did, files would be locked to read only and I could only access them when I accessed the drive as root.

USB connected drives would automatically mount, but my internal drives connected via SATA would only work with root permissions.

Right. The drives are being mounted with fstab and the highest level directory (the mount point) is owned by root. Simply change the ownership of the mount point and set sane permissions. Something like:

sudo chown -R username /mountpoint/

on my system, that looks like:

sudo chown -R steve /media/steve/04fgh56/

You would then set permissions to something like:

sudo chmod -R 755 /mountpoint/

chown will assign ownership. chmod is used to modify permissions. The -R flag applies those changes recursively (meaning that all files and subdirectories under the mount point, and not just the mount point itself, are set with the same ownership and permissions as the mount point).

755 basically means that you have exclusive read/write/execute permissions, while all others have read only permissions.

If we go into much further detail, the others in this thread will likely get annoyed and we might start an intellectual masturbation debate, where the "AKSHULLY" people will all want to chime in.

Heres my old Pioneer VSX D411 av reciever. Its gotta be about 27 years old. I bought this from a bestbuy when I was a teenager. Most of those best buys are closed now. Back then you could buy a nice set of 12" woofer KLH floor standers for $100.. that av reciever wasnt very expensive even by mid 90s standards but its what i could afford at the time. Later I had a nicer Yamaha unit but that one didnt survive.. this ones still intact and works great.

Anyway, its 5.1 can do DTS, dolby digital, prologic ll. I actually have it setup to do full 5.1 on my retro entertainment center. Butt Bongo fiesta belonged is there for funzies. That one belonged to my dad.

The Panasonic VHS/dvd ram player is equally old. I also bought that at best buy.

Theres my whole kit and kaboodle. It has 12 game consoles. Everything works and can be output to the TV. I've shown my setup on 4chins before... the AV receiver isnt really fancy hi-fi equipment or anything but its a period correct example of what might be used in such a 90s setup.. its a fun thing. I recently just collected those to look good on my stand.. desu. I may slip a few consoles in there. Im kinda hankering to get a PC engine.

Ive hardly collected anything for many of the consoles in my entertainment system. Namely the dreamcast, gamecube, PS1 and PS2 have the least amount of games collected. Im probably just gonna be doing some optical drives emulators w/sd cards for those. I pick up a little here am
and there. Im not crazy though. I've seen pictures of people's collections that get really crazy big.

Thats awesome if you can get the 36" JVC. I too have had opportunity to pickup some bigger (32") crts but I always pass on those. The 27" is the largest i go for becuase I can pick these up and move it around by myself.

If that JVC is a really nice D-series or I'art, I recommend to take full advantage of the component inputs. You have to get these sorta expensive c-sync scart cables but once you do, you can do rgb scart through to component. I just have the output going to an inexpensive rgb to component transcoder.. that switcher is really nice but I had to order a new one becuase its sorta shittily made.. it was having audio issues, hence why the velcro holding wires together.. I hope my next one isnt as bad.

anyone into diy speakers? What is a go-to 3 way design in the $1000 territory. Been considering the chevaliers, but also am ribbon curious.

I think it does have Component, though I don't remember. I know it has S-Video, and it was one of those "EDTV" models in that weird limbo between SDTV and HDTV. It was a floor model my dad hassled down to an insane deal that only boomer dads can pull off. We've had it since...2002, I think? Maybe 2003? Either way, it's heavy as fuck and a pain to move. Those early HD CRTs inhabit a weird space in time of display technology.. It may have HDMI inputs. Some of those did. They were known for having poor input lag due to the ancient post processing circuitry. Becuase of this many might not be the best for 240p retro gaming. DVD movies should still look great on it.. you should give it a test first to be certain that you really want to take it.

My buddy had one such set back them. I think it was a WEGA trinitron. It may have had 1080i or 720p support but im pretty sure it had some HDMI inputs which were newfangled technology at the time.. To us it was the nicest TV we'd ever seen. Sortly after this everything started to go lcd panel. Nowadays the good shit is oled.

It does not have HDMI. I know that much. I remember when they bought it. I was still in High School at the time and living at home. I know it was not HD. That was partially why it was so cheap, the HDTVs were just starting to become more mainstream.

I set a PB in Duck Hunt from 4' away on that TV. Made it to level 20 without missing a single duck. It's great for light gun games.

Hey man if you have the skills, you should by all means go for it. If you want to have a TV along with your hi-fi setup then ought to use it however you like as well.

Theres easy ways to get around this. You can likely order a pre-made crossover board off ali express and then upgrade to to higher grade components if you wish.

I infact order some fully built hi-fi equipment off ali express for my stereo.
Its a clone pass amp. Just 10w per channel but pure class A 360° waveform.
The case is beautiful. The internal electronics are much cheaper than what you'd see on a brand name unit but it serves my purpose fine.. some people buy these and mod them with nicer electronic components.

with just 10w per channel I do need to use very sensitive 98db speakers. I turning on and off with a little remote controller made for Christmas lighting. It really ought to have a better player than that Amazon Alexa though.

Currently using a Yamaha AVR @ 100w per channel but it is a bit hissy without direct mode (which deacticates my active subwoofer). Also have a fosi bt30d class D for my garage speakers, but doesn't work with an active sub. Like I said, tired of side grading or paying twice, as long as I stay away from tubes it shouldn't be too expensive lol

Haha. Its great ain't it? Its a very chinesium brand pass knockoff. It still has the full functionality of the genuine article.

The brand is ASYPDSW HIFI. I bought it from ali express. Its the pass AM model clone. A lot of people shy away from ordering this sort of thing out of fear that it won't work reliably and you won't really be able to get support for it. I threw caution to the wind and ordered one. Theres still a little bit of cost to get it but its far cheaper than other class A amps ive seen..

My unit has worked reliably since I bought it. It has a safety circuit which delays the signal from reaching to the speakers until the pre-amp its ready. This is handy for avoiding blowing the speakers. These amps are bad for your electric bills but its sparsely turned on... it draws 300w constantly powered on. Theres a pretty big torodial transformer inside. Class A amps are notoriously inefficient.. this is part of the reason I only chose a 10w unit.

The sound is superb. The soundstage is silent. No hissing whatsoever. The sound three dimensional and colorful. I can almost get live performance vibes from it.

The preamp I have for it has a built in EQ knobs. Thiis EQ adds just a touch of distortion. Thankfully, If the treble knob is turned all the way down this clicks off the eq for an unadulterated signal. I beleive it sounds the best this way.. other times we'll play with the EQ turned on the pump the bass a little. Its great for parties. I set it up in a common area in my house.

I bought the dumbest tv on the market and routed an HDMI cable to it from my computer.

Most of them do have input lag, its on a model by model basis and even game by game basis. I got so frustrated with it I just moved to my 4:3 20 inch for some time crisis since it would lose calibration periodically for no reason. In theory, it should work and other have success, one day I'll sort it out (in the middle of selling my house).

On the other end of the spectrum, and youve probably seen me post in /g/ - 2070SB! Found it locally after 3 years of checking listings every morning. If my wife knew I had 5 tubes squirreled away in the basement she'd be unimpressed.

It really sounds nicer than an A/B AV reciever and class D amps as well.. though, those amps are still really good and have their purposes. I've dabbled a little bit with class Ds. Their compact form factor is certainly handy.. ive used class Ds to make portable stereo setups.. Its amazing how much volume you can get from a tiny metal box. My A/B amp is used in an entertainment center. Surrounds spund. I dont have any really new stuff like dolby atmos so I cant give any impresions.

Nice PC monitor. Yea, I get the urge too to collect some good ones. I built a wooden rack to store them vertically so theyre not taking over the floor space in my storage area.

I have pretty much already have everything i want except for a nice PC monitor like yours. I haven't been on the hunt for awhile. In also currently am at 5 CRTs. Theyre fun. Im trying to learn how to do repairs to the electronics but Im sorta scared of the deflection circuits. I only attempt to work on it powered off after disconnecting and discharging the tube.. working on deflector board while completely powered off isnt entirely productive but it's the safest way for me..

Oh its that a PVM? Sweet. I can tell by looking at the heavy duty sheilding. I have an Olympus OEV143 which currently has a bum vertical deflector. It suffered a vertical collapse. It should be repairable. In the meantime Im wary to power it on as I dont want it to burn a line into the phosphor coating. I follow some basic safety procedures to discharge the tube so I dont kill myself. Maybe i can just ship my PVM to the retrotech guy so he can repair it for me... but thats probably pricey.

OP again with another question. Working on refining another media center project.

I've had Universal Media Server running on my network for a couple years now. It's fine, it works, but I'm giving serious consideration to upgrading the setup. I'm looking at the Asustor Drivestor 4 AS1104T on Amazon and tossing a couple Seagate BarraCuda Pro ST12000DM0007 12TB drives from GoHardDrive in there. I found some factory refurbs at a decent price. I figure I can use some small form factor PCs on my TVs with Kodi for watching the TV and movies I want. My only concern is the NAS. Has anyone used the Asustor NAS enclosures before? How well (or not) have they worked?

I currently have 1x 4TB HDD holding all of my TV shows and Movies. I currently have about 30GB of free space. Meaning it's time to upgrade. The 12TB drives I mentioned are factory certified, come with a 3 year warranty, and they're $160 each. I figure I'll go whole hog, try and future proof my setup as best I can, and build something respectable in the process.

Its a crazy ambitious project. While it's great that the inventor has shared instructions on how to make this possible, it all very convoluted to a newcomer such as myself. I hope the inventor of 90s cable simulator finds enough success with this project that they can turn if into a product or streaming service. A lot of people would gladly pay to use something like this. Im also not crazy about having to power up a huge NAS array to run it but this all great stuff.. maybe they can make an easy to use version for newbs. I did just recently build a sort of server PC with a bunch of old drives recently though.

I don't think he wants to do that, honestly. This was a personal project that he's shared with the community. The actual install is pretty easy with the guide. It takes care of most of the legwork for you. I came into this project with minimal linux knowledge and was able to pull it off without much hassle. The hardest part is sourcing the media, which I accomplished via Internet Archive, a private tracker, and ripping my DVDs.

Which is by design, if you ask me. I don't think it's meant to be a streaming box.

Hey, seems sensible. For a time being this type of thing may be exclusive to dedicated diyers. Its just appears to be a very daunting task to collect enough media to make something that resembles 90s TV. Though, The OP has proved its possible and done just that.

I just cant help but to think of the potential for a service to be profitable. The biggest roadblock would obviously be the copyright protections for old media and commercials. On the other hand, advertisers may enjoy the fact that they can play re-runs for ads for many products that are still in use today. Mcdonalds, Pepsi, Nike etc.. They'd avoid the cost of having to pay for new commercials and just rake in the profits from having their old ads in rotation. It could really be a huge hit. Now you're talking about starting a whole company who has people to go around and work with all the copyright owners. I could see this sort of new cable box bring pitched on the shark tank show.. hehe.

I have a bin of old dvds that could all be ripped into my computer. Though, running it in a cable simulator wouldnt yeild something that resembles 90's TV.
It would just be a bunch of movies. It cluld still be fun i guess.

I dont know how to do linux like you do but I have a windows 10 (or 11?) PC that I slated to be a home server/NAS. Its a good old antex 1200 full tower with a shit ton of HDD bays.. the hardware is pretty absolete stuff but as a NAS it would be fine. I have it loaded with about 8tb for now. I just use the create storage pool feature in windows. Its nothing too fancy.
It can be turned on/off with the switchbot to save electricity.

I had the Samsung version of that. Did pretty good for the time. The reason it doesn't do 720p is because it could only handle interlaced resolutions.

laying in bed watching my tablet on a tablet holder, with it set about 2feet away from my face, is peak comfort. I've been doing this for years and I swear by it.

The only problem I ran into is that I'd just leave my previous tablet charging 24/7 and then after about four-years of permanently staying charged the battery started to bulge. So much so that the screen came mostly detached from the frame. I came up with a creative solution for this, I bought one of these outlet timers so my tablet only charges for two hours a day.

my current setup is a crt with a ps1/ps2/wii/saturn (all jailbroken other than the ps1). The big samsung TV I got as a hand-me-down along with a surround setup that I have plugged in to a ps4, switch, amazon fire stick, and then I have a long hdmi cable that routes under the carpet and to my desk in the other room that you can see in the background. I have a script on my computer so that when I turn on a wireless controller, it'll swap displays & audio outs and launch steam in big picture on the tv which works quite well for couch gaming. The fire stick I have stremio+real debrid setup for watching anything (I used to have a jellyfin/arr setup but prefer stremio for my purposes). I have a nice couch opposite the tv but it's a little far from the crt, so normally I just sit on the floor for the crt with a pillow which isn't ideal.

I do that as well but from a dedicated PC. It sits there, I slap files onto it and play them or send a playlist to it and it plays it. Very comfy.

networking cabinet in my garage is more for my home lab but has a dream machine pro and 48-port poe switch, got ethernet to just about every room. Got a bunch of old pc hardware and laptops hanging around in bins as well, so i know i can make a better setup but it's just not a priority right now.

That's more or less what I'm setting up in my house, too. I'm using an old pc running linux, with a 12TB HDD sharing media via SMB. Run Kodi on everything that'll access it, and I'm golden.

The new drive is working great. I can highly recommend goharddrive . com for large capacity drives. This thing works great, I'm adding more content that I didn't have before.
