I'm setting up a living area in a building on my property, and I want to use this commercial restaurant sink I've had laying around for years. It has a 3.5" drain. None of the plumbing has been done yet. My dad keeps telling me that it would be a huge hassle for my plumber to hook the drain up, and that it'd be a big mistake. He won't really explain why, though, he's just doing a "I'm so right I don't even need to explain myself to you" kind of thing. Can someone with plumbing experience give me their thoughts?

A residential kitchen sink uses 1.5” or 2”. You don’t go from bigger to smaller size normally because of water flow (the flow slows down wherever the 3.5 goes to 2 that’s audible when the big pipe fills up, a recipe for clogging and bad for the pipes). So normally you’d need 3.5” pipe all the way down to the next bigger pipe which is very probably the sewer mains. Your residential plumber knows how and where he can put 2” holes and has the elbows and stuff ready in his van, but not for 3.5”.

However if you put the 3.5>2 coupling accessible and as close as possible to the sink, preferably right underneath, it should be no problem. I’m not sure what code says where you are but realistically there is no problem with a reduction that close to the sink if it’s accessible.

>It has a 3.5" drain.
Doubt
I'm betting it has a hole to accept a standard kitchen sink basket.
Take a pic of this 3-1/2" drain

Is there a washer/dryer anywhere near where you want the sink? I nigger rigged a utility sink up once using the hot/cold from the washer connections and sent flexible hose the the standpipe as a drain.

any standard 3 1/2" kitchen sink strainer or drain or garbage disposal or whatever will fit
although it doesnt look like theres enough room for a disposal but i cant say from here.
what else do you need to hook to it? dishwasher?
the faucet looks like 4" centers which is the only thing here, you need a faucet with 4"centers which is fine.
your dad just thinks its a gay idea, and i dont disagree with him, but if you want to use this just tell the plumber before he starts and he can make it work i guarantee you.
its probably also against code for some gay reasons but i assume you dont care about that
