Hey /diy/,

I need to make a dirt floor machine shop in my backyard. It's very hard desert dirt so with leveling feet it should be good. It needs to be unpermitted. Why unpermitted? I live in a part of the country that absolutely rapes you on permits, and everyone I've called (pole barn guys, slab guys) won't touch it without permits. HOWEVER, nobody around here will report you, and there are no random inspections.

So I need to know the best strategy for three retards with a telehandler to do this. We know a ton about machinery but nothing about construction.

Pic related is what I was thinking, but I have no idea how I would keep the wind dust out. We have a very fine particle dust that blows in everywhere. Also I think they disintegrate over time.

I already have the two 40ft containers. Could I just put a steel frame/corrugated roof over the top and walls over either end? But that also doesn't solve the dust problem. Sorry for the wall of text I have no idea what I'm doing

hint: conexes are steel. steel is weldable

Plant I work at has a setup like that for a storage area, they still had to make a structure to make sure it holds up against storms.

Your big problem is that if you want to keep it dustless you'll have to enclose the whole area, by doing that you increase the surface area for strong winds to push against which increases the likelihood of it getting damaged or failing if it's not structurally sound. Something like nets won't work because they'll either allow small dust through or if you can find some with a small enough mesh that they don't they'll get clogged and basically act as a tarp and catch the wind anyways. I don't see any good way to do it without a lot of welding and rectangle tube along with a bunch of semi permanent ground anchors. Even then I wouldn't trust it and doubt it would be much cheaper than getting a slab poured or a pole barn thrown up. And being fully enclosed in the desert you'll probably want some kind of cooling and/or air exchange system.

Maybe for a bridgeport, not for any kind of actual CNC machine.

Good thing I have a Bridgeport and not a cnc machine

Alright, fair enough. If you can source one for not an arm and a leg, and have a way to move it, I'd recommend getting 1"+ thick steel plate to go under it. That will help prevent settling and be easier to level off of. Or DIY a small slab for just your machines.

Diy a concrete slab without permits and then set your containers.
