if there is a P trap there that has dried up, please fill it with water to plug it from back drafting gases. if you add water and this still happens, it likely means no trap. at this point install a trap.

I have had this issue a couple of times. It's a homeless bum in the sewer smoking near your home's outlet pipe! When it happens, pour a bunch of Draino down there followed by hot water!
