hey /diy/, i'm painting some tile and i've never done this before.

i've cleaned, sanded and done a coat of primer, and the back of the can says i should sand it again between the first and second coat. why? is the can full of shit, or should i actually do this?

Sanding between coats is a way of increasing adhesion.
I suggest you follow the instructions on the can.
Also, like a previous anon said, why the fuck paint tile?
The surface on a tile is made of glass, the hardest and most hygienic surface for a bathroom or kitchen.

i checked out a bunch of videos before i made this plan, tile paint looks surprisingly good if you prep right, and if i don't like it, we can always replace the tile later.

i already moved on, the kitchen is completely out of commission while i'm doing this so i couldn't really wait for too many replies.

in yesterday's mishaps i discovered two things: i really did need to be wearing gloves and oil-based paint does not come off with water.

this is the plan if anyone was curious

the tile used to be a bright, obnoxious fire engine red, i'm redoing it in four different colors, and later we're painting the cupboards the dark green of that color swatch stuck to the door.

several professionals i've spoken to have told me that hand-painting all these colors is doing to be tedious as fuck. fortunately i am both autistic and unemployed, i love tedious detail work.

Don't forget to remove the faceplates from the outlets and such. You want the paint to be under there in case you have to replace one and can't find the exact size. Wouldn't want to have a sliver of fire engine red winking at you every time you walk in.

Normally two coats of primer is for maximum adhesion and coverage. You sand it for a smooth end finish

i did actually research this after someone mentioned it and realized sockets are way different here in australia- they're very flush to the edge and you can't really remove much of them unless you're willing to fuck with wiring.

i did do two coats of the primer but i didn't sand, it turned out really well anyway.

today's mishap: woke up 12+ hours after painting to discover paint not dry. after some googling i remembered it is still winter here and paint will apparently refuse to dry in the bone-cold of my kitchen at night. i have now turned the kitchen into a hothouse. paint is dry and tiles have been numbered. color two goes on tomorrow

hey painter guy, is there any way to clean these brushes and rollers i've already used with the oil-based paint? i had them soaking overnight in the stuff we picked up to clean off my hands, but it won't come off the brush and roller no matter how long i try.

There has to be slack in the wiring to allow their installation, which means you can unscrew them and pull them forward a couple centimetres. There might be some exposed screws sticking out on the top which might be live, so be careful with your fingers.
I wrap those screws with some masking as well as the sides and front of the outlet just in case a finger gets stuck there by someone.

"Messing with wiring" is unscrewing 3 screws per outlet and pulling them out and later putting them back in, which isn't exactly rocket surgery.
Ofc you want to pull the breakers first and measure to verify with a 2 pole measuring instrument, which you verify works first.

Good. Don't. Painted tile ALWAYS looks worse than the tile would have if you just fucking cleaned it and resealed it. Painted tile is landlord special shit. The whole thing about tile glaze that makes it so good is that nothing sticks to it well, and that's why landlord special bullshit painted tile always winds up chipping.

Actually, painted tile is coming back in vogue. I wouldn't have believed it until interior designers asked us to do it. It's definitely a cool look when done right.

It's coming along nicely. All the colors are on, there's just a fuckload of touchups to do because I don't know how to color in the lines.

A thing I am worried about is taking off the tape. I learned about midway through that it's better to take off the tape when it's touch dry and not fully dry, which I've done while painting individual tiles, but I did not do with the overall border.

Is this gonna be a problem? I'm taking it off tomorrow after this color dries, what can I do to make sure I fuck up the bottom tiles the least? Closeup incoming.

Yeah try and score the edge of the tape with a razor blade before peeling it off. Should help to keep the paint you want to stay from coming off with the tape.

make sure you use a good bonding primer and you'll be fine with that ignore these other retards. you can sand between coats if you want it smoother. sand with 220 grit.

Whelp, this the last picture I got before the light went. I might do one more day of touchups, but for the most part it's done.

I'm not entirely happy with it but it's better than fire engine red and I'm probably just being pessimistic because I've done nothing but stare at it up close for seven days. More importantly, my wife is happy.

Last post, this is the before picture. Let it be known that the rest of the house is blue and green. No idea why they picked this color tile but I'm glad it's gone.

I think it looks pretty good Anon! Way better than the red, that's for damn sure... I'm curious as to how well the painted tile will hold up to kitchen use. Of course a backsplash doesn't get a ton of wear and tear, so hopefully it will hold up well.
