I have a sort of third world issue, I have unlimited power, but water as a resource is scarce. I can only get water by loading a tank in a truck and driving it to a place that fills it and then driving back and putting the tank back on its stand, it is incredibly labor intensive.
I was wondering if /diy/ has any ideas on ways to use the power to reliably convert tainted water back into usable water. The main water uses at the moment are washing clothes, washing dishes, and showering.
My goal is to convert at least some of this used water back into clean water for washing clothes again or at minimum for use in less human stuff.
So basically boil it and distill it or evaporate and condense or what else can I do?

From my experience, the soap and dirt and salt and other junk from washing clothes will just clog this up after a while, and it doesn't really remove detergents and salts from the water making it less useful for washing clothes again. Though the filters themselves are fairly simple and I can just make it modular since the bulk of scum will just collect in the first two layers.
I think optionally I could build a multi chamber sediment trap and at least get mostly clean water from that even which is very little effort, combined with a pasturization after it would make water suitable for showering I think?

I think the obvious one of building a distillation setup makes it infinitely ish recyclable but it is labor intensive to clean it after each use and the cleaning of it will require some water and waste some water at the end.

I've kind of gone down a rabbit hole and now I am finding stuff like dehumidification water generation which could be a different route entirely since that just takes power and makes water.

Id hear up the water, get some chicken wire on a wooden panel and set it diagonally with a pipe cut in half at the end. It may or may not work but you can find it at any hardware store.

I should add one way that will work for sure is the way they used to distill moonshine

Look up solar still. I'm not sure how effective they are, but basically you could have a trash pile and collect the evaporation droplets. I have no idea how this works at scale, but assuming you have an abundance of sunlight / solar energy it might be worth experimenting with. You could dig down into the ground to aid in the cooling process.

We used to go desert hiking, and hiking in water for a few days just sucks. The idea of being water restricted just endlessly is a nightmare. I fear the future.

Can you have water delivered? There are places around me that will deliver water with tanker trucks. It's mostly for construction & filling swimming pools, but some offer delivery of potable water as well.

It is only when the sun is out and dehumidifier like an a/c is costly and requires costly inversion of the power the sun provides I'm told.
I was looking at dessicate dehumidifiers, they are very power inefficient but the main energy consumable is a resistive heater which is very simple to be powered by the sun, required no additional controllers. I think it's a consideration for like making drinking water but the scale for other uses is too much.

I will look into this solar still. It seems at the core to be sand and a clear opaque tarpaulin. I have infinite sand. I think the recovery rate is lower

Look at how earthships (which are retarded but have some okay ideas) clean graywater using plants that absorb & excrete salt, situated in a sort of artificial wetland under a greenhouse to prevent water evaporation. Bacteria and fungi can break down soap and detergents, as will sunlight and heat. You may want portions of the wetland at ground level and others 5 to 10 feet below ground level so different biological processes can occur. Pond plants and bugs will help too.

You should also look at solutions to capture seasonal flooding, seasonal rainfall, or the occasional hurricane that passes through. You want to slow the rate at which water moves across the landscape (this also prevents erosion of topsoil) and let it sit in both lined ponds for long term storage and unlined ponds for water table rejuvenation. Obviously the latter solution won't work if some retarded turd worlder pumps up all the well water to sell or some other tragedy of the commons.

You should also do your best to partially shade the soil so plants can grow, as they will sort of retain water in the local ecosystem rather than letting it evaporate and blow away as clouds. Stuff like shade trellises that are limewashed white only on the top and sides to reflect sunlight, as well as those windwell things that Persians use to create cool breezes and release dew at ground level. Ideally you want as much of the land covered with plants as possible, and things which eat those plants (stray horses, goats, donkeys, etc) fucking dead from predation.

OP, please keep in mind a still does not 100% purify water. It “purifies” water AND anything else in the water that evaporates. If there are volatile chemicals dissolved in your water those will also ended up in the still outlet. You’ll need to filter your distilled water through activated carbon if you want it to really be safe and pure. I would encourage you to consider a reverse osmosis system for purifying your drinking water, then your large solar still project can be used for all non drinking and non cooking purposes.

Get a second lighter tank to put on your vehicle, fill that up and then pump the water from it into your main tank? Not a solution but less labor intensive?

Also passive solar stills etc to use alongside your tank supply

the real solution would be finding a way to run pipes from the water source, or digging one of pic rel in the right spot.
