What’s is the actual etiquette for outdoor lighting? I have mine on during Amazon delivery hours (4am to sunrise and sunset to 10pm)

Install a camera/motion detector and keep an eye on it. the next time they do it crack them in the knees with a baseball bat and let them crawl home.

I think lights pointing down is polite, keep the skys dark.

A small light on the door if it is genuinely hard to find is fine. But people with floodlights facing the street or other houses need to be put down.

No one has said a word about it, but it’s a path light, so it has a hat directing the light downwards. You can’t see my house from the street so I put path lights from the driveway down to my house and the one that keeps getting stolen is the very first one in a garden bed at the top of the stairs. Pic related.

I can understand this desu. I use smart bulbs and then I turn the brightness down to 10% to be reasonable.

one of my neighbor's lights face my living room window and it's like having fucking car headlights shining through when they have it turned on. many people just don't realize how bright their fucking LED bulbs can be. I wish I could sabotage their shit but it'd be incredibly obvious who did it.

every time I've tried reasoning with neighbors, the situation gets worse.

in my case, it's incredibly obvious as our units are directly next to each other and they can literally SEE their light shining through my window. so they're already too dumb/too apathetic to notice or care currently.

It depends heavily on location. When we moved in the porch lights where on all night (were in a corner so mostly to prevent drunk drivers from straying towards the house), one day the guy from the farm half a mile away showed me how bright they were when seen from their bedroom because it was an unobstructed line of sight and it gets pretty dark here. We moved 2 lights and put a bush and it’s been fine since.

The real answer is talk to your neighbours. It cant be that hard to ask hey are my lights bothering you guys by any chance

I didnt care to post an update, but I turned the brightness of my light up to 100% as retaliation, and they got the message.

but yeah you're right otherwise. I hate confrontation, so. I've never had confrontation work in my favor.
