It's a viable solution to remove a bearing race even in first world countries... Rarely do I come across bearing races that don't have good access from the back side to get a punch in there and knock it out, but it does happen at times.

That's a very old, long proven classic solution in the US because it works. Some like to do it with TIG. It's less abusive than pullers because the shrunken outer race has little or no drag on its OD.

I like many others cut some flat bar to drop into the taper then tack that to the race. If the race doesn't drop out after the tack welding shrinks a tap with a long punch or similar against the bar does the job. That works great for Timken-style motorcycle neck and wheel bearings (and on old ball bearing races or cups I'm removing to discard).

It's common in industry and among motorcycle and car mechanics.
I most often use it on tapered roller Harley and other steering neck outer races as many do on those and on tapered roller axle bearings (it's easier on the bearing bore than pulling a cold race out with the official tool I also own). It was ancient when I first learned it decades ago. TIG welders did it before MIG and FCAW made it more popular among vehicle mechanics.

A key advantage is not requiring a specialty puller. Your imagination is the limit to what you can tack inside an outer race.
