Anyone do any magnet fishing?

N00b here, this is my startup rig

Thought about it, Probably all you'd find around here is absolute junk though. They sell some pretty cheap and strong magnets on temu that are labeled for magnet fishing. What lift capacity is yours rated for?

300lb

I lifted a 45lb plate with it and had to slide it to the edge to get it off so it's pretty stout

So, what do you do if you catch something you can't lift?

I'd rather not waste hours of my life pulling garbage out of the water.

Rope pullers (comealongs using rope which feed through the puller allowing use with infinite rope lengths) will give plenty of mechanical advantage.

How you guide the rope is up to you but being able to pull in slack by pulling or pushing a rope anchored on one end and connected to a load on the other gives considerable mechanical advantage. Learn how arborists use rope.

Why did you put a cut up bottle around the magnet?

Been thinking about ordering a magnet from temu and giving it a try but most of my local area was heavily bombed in WW2 and forbids it for that reason

Keep it from getting hung up on underwater limbs or other obstacles that may can't be moved. The bottle has a reasonable slope to it that could be pulled through or around. The top of the magnet is perfectly flat, it would get stuck immediately

why don't people use electro-magnets for magnet fishing? you already need the line on the magnet, it would be trivial to wrap some wires around the rope. You could then just deactivate the magnet if you catch something too heavy to pull up. Could also increase the strength if necessary.

Probably because used need a shitton of amperage to match a permanent magnet and a battery system strong enough to provide it would not be easy to carry around.

it would be extremely painful

You’re a real negative Ned, you know that? How about trying to be a positive Pete?

All you can catch around here are steelhead.

Just leave the ocean alone, I prefer my old car batteries stay where I left them.

could you run it from a car? You almost always have to drive out to whatever bridge you're magnet fishing from.
