I have a media flange on a KUKA iiwa. I'm trying to set up a bidirectional connection to a device I have at the end of the arm and I'd like to pass it through the flange. Do I need my device to turn the EtherCAT frames into regular Ethernet packets or are they compatible as is? Also, just physically speaking do I need to connect laptop to controller via ethernet, and then the frames are sent along the same cable that sends the positions/velocities or do I need to do something else? I read a little about a round connector instead of the usual square one.
Apologies if this question is half-formed or missing something obvious. I didn't really epxect to get a response and I'm away from the robot right now.

What you need to do is check your wiring, patch into whatever through ethernet network the robot is running on, and then feed the flange the data using EtherCAT frames. Are there also specific serial ports or busses that the flange needs to be connected to? If everything is wired as it should be, then my guess is that you'll have to dick around in RoboDK and maybe write some KRL to support your flange device if there is no response. Is there anything else i should know about?

I can't advise on that, sorry. I am a student myself working towards my PhD. I'm using this robot as a delivery platform for some work I have going on in signals processing and AI.
Speaking as a student more generally, I would say probably not while you're still at school. It'd be a full time position and most places wouldn't even consider someone who is in the middle of a full time course as well, because they want to pay for your full attention. Is it a full time course though? I don't know how it works with online classes.
After you finish your degree I'm not sure. I've heard robotics has good prospects at the moment so it's probably one of the better fields to be in.
