you are talking about an attic access panel? dude AI is lying to you. i make them out of wood for the houses I build. the only thing ever inspected is the size of the hole and its proximity to the air handler if it is installed in the attic.

They say 5/8" firecode drywall because it's a standard material, so they already know it has the required fire rating. You can typically still use something else, but you will have to provide documentation from the manufacturer proving that it has been tested and certified to a fire rating that meets or exceeds the minimum requirement.

Either buy one with a thicker drywall layer, pull and replace with 5/8" or add a layer of 1/2" on top of the 3/8". Then fix it so it looks decent once the inspection is over.

Idk why your panel is only 3/8. How we do it here is we layer like 3 pieces of 5/8 sheetrock then put rigid foam on top for insulation then build like a little frame on bottom for it with 1x4 kind of like trim to keep the hatch seated/so it doesnt fall down. Idk how to make it latch though. Maybe put one of these bitches on it.
